      Past the wall

      September 25, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Today's KM's - 29.9kms
      Total KM's - 462.8kms
      Total blisters - 8

A leisurely stroll today to Lugo. Mostly walking through gently rolling hills and forests. The day started in the dark and with thick fog until about 9:00. Only a little bit of road walking, to keep us on our toes, as logging trucks thundered by. The main achievement today occurred as we passed under the walls of Lugo and now have less than 100kms to go to Santiago.

Lugo seems to be a relaxed place, with lots of bars and restaurants. The most impressive feature though is the Roman wall which circles the whole part of the old centre. The wall is 7m's wide, had 85 towers and 10 gates. With the way in and out of Lugo for pilgrims through 2 of those gates.

We have some time to explore Lugo as we wait for the crazy Spanish dinner time of at least 7:30 (most don't open till 9pm). This doesn't really suit pilgrims who have been walking since 7am and are sleep deprived due to sleeping with snoring strangers. Special treat tonight though, our bunk beds are deluxe and include a privacy blind. Too bad they won't block out the snorers 😴

      Lugo

      September 27 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A long walk interrupted by frequent and heavy showers but relatively short in duration. Mostly track and roadside across the Lugo plain with none of the huge hills we have been scaling for the last 7 days.
There is an art and music festival with links to Mexico going on inside the walls of the old town with large decorated skulls in the squares. Tonight's albergue is outside the old walled city as those inside did nottre have good reviews. The view from the albergue is very different to most but I can see all the wet pilgrims enter town.

      Arousa Santiago Lugo

      September 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Exciting stage today taking the boat up the estuary to Padron and from there bike in about little over 20K to Santiago and that will be the end of Portuguese.

On a bike it is sure a fast week to get that one in and it has been interesting to say the least.

It's a wet morning with the few point near the ambiant temperature making for lots of fog right on the river and the hills but the rising sun is shining through for great light effects. Standing on the front deck powering into a headwind makes for a cold wake up call but it's so beautiful you cannot avoid standing there to take it all in. It's definitely a highlight of the coastal Portuguese Camino and the spiritual variant.

Back on the bike I pass lots of pilgrims who come from the regular route. There is not much steep terrain and I make fast progress into Santiago. I had to good idea to ask Zuzanna if she was still there and to my surprise she is.

First I go through the square and pick up my second Compostela. I had not crested a lot of emotion into this one after the Camino Francis being so amazing. But standing in the sun on the square it still gets me. There is so much emotionally charged energy from all the arriving pilgrims, that it's easy to pick up that vibe. I'm also fairly dehydrated at this point and getting loopy.

It was really great to see Zuzanna again. I saw her last way back in Fromista. But we loosely kept in touch. She is an empath and is incredibly in touch with the magic of the Camino probably the most of anyone I have seen, then again everybody has their own intensity and experiences. Hers touch the mystical. She is a beautiful human being from the inside out I think the picture says it all.

I got kicked off the ALSA bus due to my bicycle, that is not a friendly company. But Monbus was able to take me without any trouble for half the price. Phew, travel, you never know when you are thrown for a loop.

Lugo is fully circled by a huge Roman wall, lots of activity on Saturday night and lots of young families. It's hot and dry and it's the opposite from this mornings clammy cold boat ride, it feels great.

I meet Susanne from Minnesota and we chat a little in the park. She's on the Primitivo and she's feeling strong for her age. Eric isn't here to ask the insightful questions and the conversation fades. I'm hungry for some pizza and feed the monster.

It's time for a shower and some live music, see what I can find.

      Lazy in Lugo

      October 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

It was not a whole lot of sleep last night. Sally, as I later found out her name, was on the top bunk and she was pretty restless. In the morning I say hello and I find out she's from Boulder Colorado, sort of in my backyard, worldly speaking that is.

We got a great Camino conversation going right away. She is dealing with some ADHD issues that she has mostly conquered and she has made positive changes in her life. Still she is here on the Camino Primitivo on a 3 week vacation from her structural engineering job. Her knee hurts so we have time to chat until I go for my mtb ride. We get really deep and connected. Another good soul who showed me an aspect of myself that I never knew how to deal with and that she had done a lot of work on. Had a good laugh when I showed her the move I had to make when I got locked out yesterday with the wrong entry code. I slipped through the 4 inch wide bars sideways. They give just enough for it to work. She took the bus to Arzua and is renting a bike there to get to Santiago and save her knee. So now I am not the only switcheroo.

Komoot proposed an expert mtb ride that turns out to be a couple of backcountry paved roads with a little bit of gravel track and a path that is fully grown over. But it gets hot fast today so I roll on back and grab some food from the highway store. That's all that's open and I roll into town for a good surprise of some live music at a bar so I lay down in the grass in the shade.

Back at the albergue, I'm pooped so take a little nap, take a shower and then come out into the big square where there's more live music going on. This time it is a classic Galician group and the people in the street start dancing to the Celtic inspired music, that was quite a nice locals scene.

I am still too stuffed from lunch to eat anything, even a salad, but I might have to make an effort. Some yogurt and a peach, perfect. And a chat with Sally about traveling in Bolivia. Nice.

      Last night in Lugo

      June 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Well last night was fun it made me think of Abby a bit - it had the feel of a big gray party with the whole town in on it.

I got to go dancing and even went to a Latin night club and had a few dances which was nice but also felt sad as I missed my playmate :-(Read more

      St-Jacques-de-Compostelle -Lugo

      May 21, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

J’étais bien choqué😂😂😂Read more
