      Day 53–54

      Day 53 Bilbao to Sestau

      The sun was shining as we got up and breakfasted at Andres’s flat. Then on the road once more.
      We wandered through complete urban sprawl on the way out of Bilbao. The nicest sections were along the canal and at 1 point through a kind of country park whee the locals were sunbathing.
      Apart from that we went through blocks of apartments, under and over motorways, big loud building projects and felt quite done in when we arrived in Sestao. It had been a long slog of roads and underpasses.
      The approach into town was very daunting with rubble and broken concrete buildings with lots of graffiti.
      We plodded up and down the Main Street of pinxtos bars, we found one that was serving chips and burgers and settled for lunch.
      Still have big issues with finding food as no where here does a meal before 8.30pm.
      We called into a local greengrocer and bought supplies to cook as we knew we had a kitchen to use.
      We arrived at the apartment we had a room in and the owner was quite flustered as she had been in shower when we rang the bell!
      We were shown our room, the bathroom and kitchen then left to our own devices.
      After showering we slumped, then had to rally to get cooking - our first homemade meal in 2 months.
      We were well underway with this when the phone went.
      Suddenly 2 more guests arrived- so now we are 5 adults in a tiny apartment with one toilet 😫
      Not great!!
      We will avoid this situation in future
      We settled ourselves to eat whilst the other adults wandered about us working out how to use the washing machine- not very relaxing!!
      Anyway onwards and forwards let’s hope we get some sleep and are in a more peaceful setting tomorrow 🤞      Read more

      Day 3

      Sicedio En El Puente

      Wir wollen mit der Metro zur Schwebebrücke an die Küste.
      Was wir nicht wussten, um 14:30 Uhr ist die Bahn total überfüllt. Für 13 Stationen bezahlt man pro Person nur 1,80 € , aber statt 20 min braucht die Bahn 60 min. Kein Sitzplatz, im Gedränge stehen, nur keine Panik.

      In Portugalete steigen wir aus und müssen noch den Berg runter. Dann sehen wir „Die Biskaya-Brücke (spanisch Puente (de) Vizcaya, baskisch Bizkaiko Zubia) ist eine Schwebefähre und als Weltkulturerbe von der UNESCO anerkannt. Sie ist die älteste Schwebefähre der Welt und noch heute in Betrieb.“

      Biskaya-Hängebrücke

      Nach einer weiteren ruhigen Nacht gemütlich gefrühstückt, Ver- und Entsorgt. Das Ziel Biskaya-Brücke hat Google in Getxo gut gefunden. Dann folgten wir dem Schild Parken, ein Parkhaus. 😳 Wir kurvten durch enge Straßen, bishin zu 20 kmh Fußgänger Bereichen. Die Polizei schaute gelassen zu. Dann zwangsläufig drehen, alles sehr eng, leider kein Parkplatz für unser Reisemobil. Die interessante Schwebefähre konnten wir immer wieder mal sehen. Schade, nix wie weg bei Nieselregen... 🥴

      Bilbao- Puente Colgante

      Puente Colgante ist Spanisch und heisst "Hängende Brücke ".
      Die älteste Schwebefähre der Welt beeindruckt als Monument der Industriellen Revolution mit sensationeller Architektur und grandioser Aussicht.
      Kurz vor der Mündung des Nervión in den Golf von Biskaya, wenige Kilometer flussabwärts hinter Bilbao, befindet sich eines der letzten Überbleibsel der europäischen Industriellen Revolution. Die Schönheit und Funktionstüchtigkeit der Puente de Vizcaya sind heute noch beeindruckend.
      Diese Flussbrücke über den Nervión ist 45 m hoch und 160 m lang und verbindet die Ortschaften Portugalete und Getxo miteinander. Sie war die erste Brücke der Welt, mit der man über ein Hängeschiff, das von einem Ufer zum anderen schwebte, gleichzeitig über den Fluss fahren konnte. Noch spektakulärer ist es die Brücke in 45 Metern Höhe auf dem Skywalk zu begehen.      Read more

      Bilbao ist absolut sehenswert! Die einst hässliche Industriestadt hat sich zu einer Kunstmetropole entwickelt. Natürlich vor allem wegen des Guggenheim Museums, aber überall in der Stadt stehen Kunstwerke herum, man muss nur die Augen offenhalten. Mein persönliches Highlight war die Schwebefähre, so etwas habe ich noch nie gesehen.Read more

      Short Days

      Thursday and Friday turned sunny again, and we had short walks of about 7 and 8 miles. That gave us time to have lunch, shower and nap, which helps us to recover.

      Bilbao was our favorite town so far. With over 1 million people, it’s the largest city in the Basque Country, a combination of vintage buildings and cutting-edge modern architecture. Its crown jewel is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, opened in 1997 and financed by the citizens of Bilbao (photos below).

      John was thrilled to find a KFC while I was thrilled to find tapas and a nice red wine. Our pension room was located on a narrow street with a couple of bars. They closed at midnight, but folks carried on talking and singing for a couple more hours. Then around 3:30, the street cleaning machine fired up below our window and proceeded to hose down the street. So we were already awake when Ronny texted us that our pecan tree was pretty well destroyed, along with other tree damage, on a storm that moved through San Antonio yesterday. Messy, but looks like no structural damage.

      Tonight we’re in Portugalete, a port town near Bilbao, in a very comfortable hotel. We crossed the river into town via the Viscaya Bridge, an iron and steel cable bridge built in 1893 (photos below). A shuttle that hangs from the bridge frame can hold 6 vehicles and several dozen people. Cost to cross was €0.45. Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” was playing on the way over — how appropriate!      Read more

      Crossing by various means

      Earlier start than the hosts would've wished but he hid any displeasure he might have been feeling, very well. In fact he couldn't have been more hospitable - that said for all I know he could've been calling me all names under the sun. We muddled through - some very nice honey & fruit muesli. Loaded up & was assured that the weather would pick up. From the start things looked bleak - straight up hill & within a couple of miles roads didn't exist - twice. To top it off - big climb, only to find that the road had been closed for tree felling. All was not well with the world. Found a main road & battled with the traffic until I was taken under the wing of 2 wisened cyclists. They were quite taken with the bulkiness of my task & insisted I follow them tk a better route into Bilbao. And indeed it was - a cycle path that was as flat as a pancake - no mean feat around these parts. Mentioned about the Vizkaia Bridge & they made a detour to make sure I found it. At which point they scooted off happily waving - their work was done. The big deal about this bridge is that you ride a lift upto the top of the towers & see the workings. Oh & get great views of the estuary. Helps that the sun made it's first appearance. Took the bridge across & then walked back along the top - twice.Read more

      Weirdest bridge ever

      The Vizcaya Bridge connects the suburbs of Gexto and Portugalete. Built in 1893, it was the first metal transporter bridge. It is still in regular use with the gondola taking a maximum of 6 cars!

      You could walk across the top of the structure but after looking at it we chickened out and simply paid .40c to be a regular passenger.Read more

      Kleiner Stopp an einem nicht alltäglichen Ort. Puente de Vizcaya - die älteste und immer noch im Betrieb befindliche Schwebefähre der Welt 🌎. Weltkulturerbe!

      Wir lassen es uns nicht nehmen auf die andere Seite zu „schweben“. Leider ist die Fahrt kurz und im Auto bekommt man nicht so viel mit.
      Erstmal parken und den Aufzug suchen, denn man kann auf der oberen Querstrebe umher laufen. Panoramaweg in 50m Höhe. Nicht gerade günstig (9€) aber was solls. Im kleinen Glasaufzug wird mir schon etwas mulmig und auch auf dem Weg sollte man schwindelfrei sein. Das mulmige Gefühl weicht der Angst das Handy fallen zu lassen. Holzplanken, genug Raum um durchzufallen und für immer im Fluss zu versinken 😱.
      Ein paar Fotos geschossen (schwierig wegen der Gitter), die Aussicht genossen und wieder runter auf sicheren Boden.      Read more
