      Decision point

      August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This morning I reached the big fork, and given the difficulties getting accommodation on the Invierno, I stayed on the Francés.
The main point of the Invierno is to avoid a big mountain, which gets covered with snow in winter. Although I heard that the Invierno was very scenic, I hear that the mountain has beautiful views too, and I didn't want to miss it. So, I am happy with the decision. I was going to have to book ahead in any case, so I will get used to that when needed.Read more

      Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada

      September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Left for Ponferrada at 9 AM. Had to wait for the rain to stop. Approximately 30 km's mostly downhill. Still a little tired from yesterday, but out the door when the rain ceased. Walked through a couple of little but nice towns on the way. Molinaseca had quite a few nice places to stop and shop or get a café. The little town of Campo was a sleep except for the guy gave out a few pears and the little old lady who just wanted to chat. Ponferrada seems pretty nice, already did my walk around while looking for a bank after getting into town. Albergue is very nice.Read more

      To Ponferrada

      October 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

      October 1

The descents yesterday and today about did my hip and knees in…I don’t mind going downhill, but going down steeply on sideways slabs of rock and then loose scree-like rock is not my thing AT ALL! I am so glad we can put that part of our journey behind us. 🙂

It’s amazing how our minds usually forget the hard unpleasant parts and tend to only remember the good. Not sure I will forget this, though.

We walked into Ponferrada with Judy from Dublin. She’s the one who almost caught Alan without his shorts yesterday when we were accidentally in her room. 😂

Ponferrada has an amazing castle! The castle of the Templar knights of Ponferrada is a magnificent building. It houses the Templars’ Library and the Ponferrada Investigation and Study Centre, which contains almost 1,400 books including facsimile editions of works by Leonardo da Vinci.

It was originally a hill-fort and later a Roman citadel. At the beginning of the 12th century, the Templar knights took possession of the fortress and reinforced and extended it to use it as an inhabitable palace and for protection, on the route of the pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. It is so large, it’s hard to get a good photo.

For the past few days I have been craving pizza and we were able to have amazing pizza during our late lunch with Don and Maryann from San Francisco. Craving satisfied!

It has been HOT in the late afternoon, so tomorrow will be another early, early start. We walked by moonlight this morning and plan to do it again.

We have 128 miles left and are headed to Villafranca del Bierzo.

    • Day 18

      Ponferrada to Sarria

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I wake up at 3am to a thunderous amount of snoring coming from the three other old guys they stuck in a room together with this geezer. The walls were shaking. 4hrs of sleep and my brain gets going, I'm hardly in my fantastic new euphoric state anymore. Doubt creeps in, amongst other things decision time is still the big choice this morning. I'm all packed and ready to go, but where? 180km or so to Santiago - just bust it out and walk to the coast to test my shin for the next three days? The weather does not look great, I'd rather walk then ride in it. The Invierno is just so off track and with bad weather it has potential to not be very fun. Very different from the Frances. Let's stay on Frances, punch it out. Let's go test the walking while keeping the bike on hand. And let's go find that balance back!

Oh boy today. Started under heavy rain. Lucky it let up. The mood got better. My attachments let go, met Brazilian cyclists. Then British and a Dutch tandem husband and wife. Really fun I jumped on their wheel climbing the approach to Cebreiro pass. They stopped before the steep part, I went up ahead and followed a guy with a backpack and a shell up a step incline. I went the wrong way but I didn't know until I had climbed over 2000 ft. Stuck on the wrong road I got to add another 2000 extra for the day. Sometimes you just never learn.

But then again you do. I got to detach a strong feeling from it's object today and I was able to key back into the present when out of it. That's a win for today!

Oh by the way the chart in the albergue was wrong it was 235km, add the detour and that makes for an interesting day.

      Camponaraya from Ponferrada

      October 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Private room, so I enjoyed sleeping in. I didn’t have to check out until noon, so I left my gear and went out. Chocolate and churros is a Spanish delicacy that I had neglected to try on the previous Camino. Decided to try it out and wow! The chocolate is so thick it’s almost pudding. And delicious, and you just have to dip your deep fried churros in it! Massive chocolate and sugar high.

I then speed walked to the Ponferrada Castle and examined it in great detail. It’s a really well preserved castle built in 12th century by the Templar Knights to protect pilgrims on the camino from robbers and extortion. Most of today’s pictures are of the castle.

Started walking after noon and it was pretty nondescript most of the day. Getting into and out of big cities is not a high point of the camino. Got rained on a couple of times, but nothing like the last few days.

      Burgos

      February 8 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Ponferrada

      June 15, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Was gibt's zu erzählen?

      Foncebadon - Ponferrada

      November 6, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      27km - albergue municipal
      Longue descente aujourd'hui... 1000m

Cruz de Ferro and descent to Ponferrada

      September 29, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The iron cross marks the highest part of the mountain pass and has become the place pilgrims leave behind a stone brought with them from home (or elsewhere) on the Camino. I brought stones from my birthplace the Isle of Sheppey (from the beach adjacent to the Catholic Church of St Henry and Elizabeth). I then passed through El Acebo a typically mountain village with rickety wooden balconies suspended over the road. Through Molinaseca; on to Campo; and finally to Ponferrada for the night. I am bedding down in the Albergue de Guiana. Ponferrada's Templar Castle is one of the best preserved examples of its kind and offers a glimpse into what castle life must have been like in the 12th and 13th centuries. Well enough of the history...my Albergue is 21st Century and while I've written this my washing has dried in the tumble drier!Read more

    • Day 29

      Ponferrada

      May 24, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Tom was excited to see the sunrise at the Cruz De Ferro so we quitely slipped out of our shared Albergue room before daybreak around 5:30am. We were two of the first to arrive at the Iron Cross and set our stones down in the quiet, predawn.

The last time Tom did this stretch, the Templar castle in Ponferrada was closed. Due to some careful planning, we arrived on our anniversary and after checking into our double room at a modern Albergue, we headed to the castle. Luckily, much of the notes were translated into English and I got to nerd out on 12th century, Templar history.

We've come 350 miles and the path has taken it's toll on Tom's feet. During this trek he had to break 4-5 times you adjust the bandages on his blisters. We're entering mountainous terrain, which we are both quite excited about. Tom found a shoe store and bought a new pair of sandals so, fingers crossed, Tom's feet sitch will get sorted. 🤞🏻
