Navarrete to Santo Domingo (37 km)

      April 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

I didn't have Wi-Fi last night, so couldn't update. Started walking in Navarrete yesterday morning and walked to Najera and then today walked to Santo Domingo. Fairly easy walk yesterday, but a bit more challenging today. Walked past a city that was built but never occupied - apparently some sort of scheme when the EU bank was offering loans for housing! It had been raining and one section was slippery clay that added a few pounds to the shoes! Tomorrow is supposed to be a hard walk (hill wise) and I was hoping to take a bus for this section, but can't find one. I may take a day off and consider options.Read more

Azofra to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

      May 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

What a day! I left Azofra around 6.45 am before breakfast in anticipation of the treat I had at the end of the walk. The first nine kilometres were through some beautiful countryside, back to the yellow flowering fields. There was quite a climb to Ciruena where we discovered that there weren’t any cafes! So there was nothing to do but to continue straight onto Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

I arrived there around eleven and went to check into my hotel - Parador Santo Domingo Bernardo de la Fresneda. I had discovered that if you join Parador Amigos that you could get a special spring rate of 65 euros and they also gave you a free breakfast voucher. A very kind person at the front desk let me check in early and gave me a double room which was the only one available at the time. It was bliss to have a hot shower and have some conditioner to put in my hair. It also has a bathtub which I used later.

I had a relaxing ‘menu of the day’ in the square watching all the families out for Sunday lunch. I then went to the sister Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada to use the free drinks’ voucher they gave me. It will be a shock going back on the road tomorrow and back to an albergue tomorrow night. But what an experience!

      Toeristenbureau

      May 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Read more

      Sto. Domingo de la Calzada

      July 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The church is dedicated to Domingo, a monk who developed most of the area. It is super lavish, which feels odd, considering the relative frugality of the hamlets around it.

It houses a pen with a hen and cock which traced back to a story about a chicken coming alive on a plate to prove a boy’s innocence.

I usually don’t go into churches. Their lavishness annoys me, paying 5€ (the cost of a nights sleep) to a diocese that proudly displays millions of dollars in gold and silver feels wrong. But since this one is the sister church of my home in Schondorf, Bavaria, I had to.

      Salute to the Major!

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today was shorter -21km- which everybody needs after yesterday! We have a nice room even with TV which we won’t use as we need to celebrate Davide‘s promotion to Major! I think he got it because he is doing just sich a good job on the Camino 😉! Song of the day was „All you need is love“ by the Beatles! But for Davide it should be „Running up that hill“ by Kate Bush! In fact we saw 1 guy RUNNING with his backpack today- crazy! I just am happy that my feed get me here at all! Met a few Germans again like Jürgen but also Tom or Rosana! The hostel is huge here!Read more

      Santo Domingo de la Calzada

      September 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Woke up bright and early at 6am, left the albergue in the dark. Found a cute cafe/bar in town to get a muffin and coffee. The town had a festival last night and the partied until 5am, we were very lucky to find anything open this morning. We walked 12 miles, lots more vineyards, a golf course, and more statues/art for the camino. Also meet a nice gentleman on top of a hill that had drinks and fruit and some great trinkets all for donations. Mom and I stopped in town as soon as we got here and had a fabulous 🥗.Read more

      Day 11

      September 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

I’m going to briefly start backwards just incase I forget to mention that I had an absolutely gorgeous meal tonight.. the guy, and his wife, who was the cook/chef, both gave me a hug when I left.. maybe I was a bit too effusive in my thanks … but… YES!!! They gave me VEGETABLES ..😂
Today was a good walk, well signed after my wobble day of yesterday.. nothing difficult, and lots of it looking like I’m on the road to nowhere, but, with lovely views to the side..
Nothing major happened, but as opposed to yesterday, it was the last 5 km I met and passed lots of people..it was almost like a handicap race finish, which led to a great atmosphere in the square where everyone seemed to stop for a chat /food or drinks.
Whilst debating whether or not it was too early to have my 2%lemon Amstel I’ve become rather fond, an Irish guy… I have actually remembered his name.. Jerry!! An Irish runner that’s represented Ireland ( about 20 odd years ago.. bit like me with GB ) and spoke when I passed him the other day, ( recognised the Manx flag ).. started chatting about TT, running, fell running ( both done a few of the same races in UK /Ireland many moons ago) he was doing the Camino to get some fitness back after falling off a ladder in March and breaking two ribs!! Think we sat there chatting like two old ladies for nearly an hour.. hopefully we’ll catch up again somewhere along the way..
My accommodation was found relatively easily.. phew.. it’s clean, near to the route for the morning and do breakfast before I need to leave!! Who knew I’d get to start loving breakfast, liking olives, Spanish red wine and olive oil on my salad 😳…

    • Be Sure to Turn Around!

      September 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Starting early in the morning in the silence of darkness. Torch on. It’s not long before I hear the clicking of trekking poles and the hum of quiet voices. This is a typical morning on the Camino.

This morning was on the cold side. I am always cold, but even the pilgrims around me had long sleeves and jackets. After the hot sun, day after day, cool morning is a welcomed change!

No food or coffee at the Albergue, so we hike for over an hour to the next town, hoping a bar is open for coffee and breakfast! We were in luck!

At the bar stop, we see many of the pilgrims we have been traveling with from town to town. Some we have not seen in days, some we saw last night in the plaza.

As we approach the towns, the church steeple is always visible...because it is high on a hill...a hill we will climb!

Along the Frances Way, there is an opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful Cathedrals in Spain. Most have Mass in the evening for all pilgrims.

The Camino heads southwest. I share this because you will miss God’s magnificent handiwork as the sunrises if you don't turn around!

I have no idea where I'm headed tomorrow, but I can't wait!

    • Feeling Puny on Camino is No Fun!

      September 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

Walking 21 km is not too bad, except if you are sick to your stomach. I felt awful yesterday, but I made it! I even went to the Spanish Pilgrim’s Mass— but all I really wanted to do was to be back in my bedroom in Coppell, TX with Joe and my Aussie girls Ellie and Piper.
      Tomorrow is another day!
