      Segovia Day Trip

      May 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Early but bright start to the day. Train out from Chamartin station at 8 am via Renfe to Segovia Ave station which is located across from a grassy hillside where cattle are grazing. Fortunate to catch the bus into town as they don't come very often (i.e. go right to the bus station when you get in). Took about 15 minutes to the centre of town which is unmistakable because there is a huge aqueduct in front of you! Quite amazing to see such a construct without mortar and still in place after 700 years. Similar to Toledo, the town was getting set up for tourists who had not yet arrived; lots of deliveries to restaurants along Real (Royal) Calle (Road). Doug had downloaded an audio guide from Get Your Guide and "Begonia" took us on a walking tour up to the Alcazar (Castle) at (yes!) the top of the hill. Most of the buildings here have unique decorative plasterwork on the exterior.Read more

      El Acueducto de Segovia

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

      》The Aqueduct of Segovia

It was built during the second half of the 1st century A.D. under the rule of the Roman Empire and supplied water from the Frío River to the city into the 20th century. The remaining portion of the structure stands 28.5 meters tall at its maximum height and nearly 6 additional meters deep in the main section. Along 14 kilometers of rolling landscape, the aqueduct adjusts to the contours of the valley, hills, and city and creates a sense of grandeur and monumentality. The pillars and arches of its tall, two-story arcades are made of solid blocks of stone fit closely together with little or no mortar, and the lower arches alternate in height according to the structure’s adaptation to the contours of the land. It is made of 167 arches fashioned from the granite stone of the Guadarrama Mountains.

Detrimental reconstruction occurred in the 15th and 16th centuries, and not until the 1970s and 1990s was there urgent conservation intervention. The aqueduct was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1985 and stands prominently in the urban landscape of Segovia. The Aqueduct of Segovia remains one of the most intact Roman aqueducts in Europe.

》Perhaps the least known story surrounding this magnum opus of the 1st or 2nd century is the legend of the serving girl who used to climb, every day, to the very top of the mountain and return with her pitcher full of water. One day, fed up of this daily toil, she made a wish to the Devil, whom she asked to build some means by which she would no longer need to go up and down every morning with her pitcher. One night Lucifer granted her wish, asking for her soul in return if he managed to finish the aqueduct before the cockerel crowed.

The girl agreed and the Devil began to build the aqueduct but the girl regretted her decision. Just as he was about to lay the last stone, the cockerel crowed, meaning the Devil lost his wager and the girl kept her soul. In the gap that remained, the statue of the Virgin of Fuencisla, patroness of the city, stands today.

      Segovia

      March 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Read more

      Alcazar and Tower visit, Segovia

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A number of us decided to the visit to the Alcazar which included a visit to the top of the tower (152 steps). We had a timed entry to the Tower so we did that first, it consisted of a couple sets of normal stairs followed by a small and narrow spiral staircase that was hard going but we made it. We were advised by the guard we had 50 minutes in total at the top.

The climb was worth it with 360 degree views across Segovia. On the descent there was a lower balcony, where we also got good views of the town. After descending the Tower we visited several rooms in the Alcazar, which was in great condition.

      Alcázar de Segovia

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

》The Alcázar of Segovia (Fortress of Segovia)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Spain’s most impressive castles and, interestingly enough, it is also one of the castles* that inspired the design of Cinderella’s Castle at Walt Disney World.

      * Everyone likes to argue over this. It’s said however that Walt Disney was inspired by both The Alcázar of Segovia and Germany’s Neushwanstein Castle.

》The Alcázar is incredible. Entering the castle requires crossing a drawbridge over a precipitous moat. Looming high above are huge turrets (you can buy a ticket to go up there. The views are great).

The “keep”, the fortified towers that are so prominent when looking at the Alcázar head on, are deceivingly narrow and almost like a façade to what lies beyond. When you step through into the castle you end up in a large courtyard and looking back at the keep.

      First views in Segovia

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

》Arrived through the Segovia-Guiomar train station

      》Segovia-Guiomar train station

The “Guiomar” train station in Segovia is located on the outskirts of the city and facilitates access to and from Madrid and the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coastal regions.

      》The Old Town of Segovia

Located in the centre of Spain, in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León. The centre is crowded together on the rocky bluff delineated by the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores rivers.

Segovia is symbolic of a complex, historical reality. Its neighbourhoods, streets, and houses are laid out in accordance with a social structure in which hierarchy was organized and dominated by belonging to one of the different cultural communities. Moors, Christians, and Jews coexisted for a long period of time in the medieval city and worked together during the 16th century manufacturing boom.  The evidence of this cultural process can be seen in the large number of outstanding monuments in the city, among which, the Roman Aqueduct stands out. Other important monuments can be found in the property: the Alcázar, begun around the 11th century; several Romanesque churches; noble palaces from 15th and 16th centuries; the 16th-century Gothic cathedral, the last to be built in Spain in this style; and the Segovia Mint, the oldest industrial building still existing in Spain.

      》Plaza Mayor

A town square located at the end of the street called Calle Real, which is one of the most famous streets in Segovia. Within Plaza Mayor, you can find several important buildings, such as the town hall, the Juan Bravo Theatre, the San Miguel Church, and the cathedral.

Centuries before the plaza was built in the 17th century, the space was treated as the center of the village, where vendors would install their stands and citizens would socialize and meet. It is said that in the middle ages, the street was known as Calle de la Cinteria, which means Ribbon Street because of the sector's shops and all its vendors.

      》Casa Vicente Restaurante

This place serves meals, which are typical for the whole continent of Europe, spanish food with its delicious savory sauces and spices are popular among the Guests. To combat the hunger for sweet dishes, Casa Vicente can easily alleviate with its delicious desserts.

      Segovia

      April 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Na een mooie busreis via het natuurpark Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama hebben we segovia bereikt. Intussen hebben we in dit natuurgebied stieren, schapen, ooievaars en roofvogels gespot

Segovia is o.a. bekend door hun aquaduct.

      Plaza Mayor of Segovia

      May 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Doug took in the Cathedral while Nancy was content to poke around the market which happened to be on. since it was Thursday. Large trailers (how do they get them in there?) of baked goods, several stalls of wonderful looking vegetables and one which was fairly busy with multiple bins of olives which were being ladled out into bags and weighed.

Plaza Mayor is the main square of Segovia and is filled with lots of activity and is very vibrant. The Cathedral of Segovia occupies one side of the square and shows just how large the cathedral is. The town hall with clock is on another side. Cafés, restaurants and bars surround the entire square.

      》Iglesia de San Andrés

The church is a mix of different architectural styles. On the one hand, Gothic architecture dominates, on the other, however, the influence of baroque and eclecticism can be observed. Noteworthy is the distinctive entrance portal. There are about 60 mummies of high-ranking personalities in the church.Read more
