Day 31 - to Valtuille de Arriba

      June 21 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I woke to the bluest sky this morning... what a relief! 🫶 We set off at 7.15am for 28kms. The walk was really pleasant today... lots of little villages every 5kms or so and heaps of vineyards!

1st stop was Ponferrada, where the Knights Templar Castle is ... we had a pancake brekky until 9 am, but the castle didn't open until 10 am, so I sadly had to skip the tour as there was still 21km to walk!

We chatted to a German lady who told us she shared a room with a Japanese man last night since he had 4 beds in his room! However, she was most horrified when she found his teeth in a glass in the bathroom, and he also didn't close the door when using the toilet - for 1s or 2s!!! 😱... I think she was scarred for life! 🤣

We got very distracted along the route today as there were so many fruit and nut trees!! But what caught our eye the most was a big cherry tree!! We tried to pick from it, but most of the fruit was too ripe...bummer! ☹️

I spontaneously booked an albergue for tonight, which is in a very small village with very little around. However, the reviews were great, and it sounded nice with dinner & breakfast ... she also has 5 dogs for me to play with!!

We arrived at La Biznaga - Albergue de Peregrinos, and we're sitting out back waiting to be checked in when who pops their head out the door, but MO from the US! Our long-lost friend from week 1!!! We have been keeping in touch on whatsapp, but neither of us knew where we were at! It was such a nice surprise, and we all had a lovely communal dinner, sharing stories and having a good laugh! 🍷

The weather is warming up, so we'll 'aim' to leave earlier to miss the hottest part of the day tomorrow which is around 3pm. 🌞... Buenos noches!! 🌚

      Villafranca del Bierzo (9.5km / 586.1km)

      May 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today was definitely a “gentle stroll”. I can see I am going to have to define the differences between all the walk descriptions but that is for another day. Gentle pace, short distance, no time pressure and idyllic scenery. We wanted to spend time in Villafranco so we planned a short day giving tourist time.
We had a late start and slept in until 7:15! First breakfast was coffee and churros at a “Churreria” - it is all they make. They were lovely but didn’t really tick the nutritional box so we had a fairly short walk to our second breakfast, about 80m! More coffee tostados and orange juice this time.
The walk was [insert superlative adjective of choice]. We literally walked through vineyards and cherry tree lined roads. The video will do it justice. It certainly didn’t inspire a fast pace and we just loved it.
Villafranca is in a valley with a decent sized river, some pretty steep hills and winding streets. Not sure about google maps “mostly flat” descriptions. So it is beautiful but it is at the bottom which means climbing out! We have a couple of days of hills before a big climb at the end of Monday’s walk and the start of Tuesday’s.
There are at least 4 large churches (including one founded by St Francis when he was a Pilgrim 800 years ago) but they were all closed which was disappointing and a private castle. Very impressive! On our way back after dinner, we did pop into the biggest church, Colegiata de Santa Maria de Cluni, which was beautiful and some lovely statues. But the church was filling up very quickly for Confirmations, which makes sense being Pentecost tomorrow, so we didn’t stick around too long.
We were hoping for processions for Pentecost but that doesn’t seem to be happening. We will make it to our destination tomorrow for Mass as Sunday Masses are at 12pm.

      Day 31, Ponferrado to Pieros

      June 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We set out at 6.45 this morning because the forecast promised worryingly hot weather and I was keen to get as much mileage under our belt as possible while it was still cool. Anna, who’d stayed in our dorm last night, walked with us for the first couple of hours. This morning’s wasn’t the most exciting route - we left the city and walked along a surprisingly busy country road for several kilometres. It would have been more relaxing if there’s been a pavement but nonetheless it was interesting to see how people live on the outskirts of a small city like Ponferrado. Lots of small holdings, some with a few sheep, many with great vegetable gardens; very little of it looked affluent.
After a couple of coffee breaks we were delighted to find ourselves among vineyards and olive groves and well away from traffic. This was an absolute treat, especially appreciated because we hadn’t expected it.
We stopped a little while at the lovely town of Cacabelos where we bumped into Anna again and ordered iced coffees (hot coffee plus a glass of ice) and a plate of Padron peppers. Fiona and I were both taken with this place and wondered if we should have stayed here, as Anna was doing.
Instead we pressed on to Pieros to our vegetarian albergue. The people are nice (mostly volunteers), it’s very cheap (20 euros for bed and dinner) but it really is in the middle of nowhere and I am seriously wondering if we haven’t made a mistake. Cacabelos was very appealing and the next town, Villafranca del Bierzo, is also supposed to be lovely. There’s nothing here but a closed-up church and some vineyards.
We had hoped to visit an old monastery which is 4 kms away but it proved expensive and precarious to rely on a taxi and neither of us were keen to add another 8kms of walking to today’s mileage given the heat. We were both feeling a bit frustrated until we learned we could catch a local bus back to Cacabelos where we could do wild swimming. This was just what we needed - it was cooling and lovely in the river where, apart from us, the average age of swimmers was probably about 12 years old.
Tonight we had a communal meal at our very quiet albergue - the two of us and a German man who we’ve met before but haven’t managed to speak to for lack of a common language (though he is friendly and often offers to take pictures for us on the route) and a German woman who we did manage to talk to a little with the help of Google translate.
I’m feeling full and tired and am hoping for a good night’s sleep because we are planning to leave in the morning at 6.30. The weather forecast suggests temperatures of 36 degrees by lunchtime so we need to have covered as much ground as possible before then.

Ponf. to Villafranca del Bierzo - pt two

      April 20 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

All in all another offensively beautiful day which consisted mostly of me walking up a hill, looking out from the top, and saying f u c k off. Anything under 25km feels short now (BRAG) and after the intense elevation changes of yesterday (and to come tomorrow), it was a joy. It starts quite cold, mornings are usually between 1 and 8 degrees and then, unlike home, it jumps about 2pm, with the hottest part of the day usually around 6pm. So you can see why siesta (and everything closing) happened between 2 and 5.

For pilgrims, it means the morning kilometres are far easier than the afternoon ones, and lunch has to be considered - if you're not arriving before 2 you had better eat or go to the supermarket on the way or it'll be a hungry wait. So you make some decisions based on your route, energy, the weather, and how competitive getting a bed in the first-come-first-served albergue scene is in the town you're heading for. I've had a go at just about all approaches so far but today I got in about 1.30pm, a full three hours earlier than yesterday, which felt lightning.

      129. Etappe Molinaseca - Pieros

      October 8, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Mein Magen knurrt! ;)

      A hippie albergue

      August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This is a big old house with a hippie vibe. It's full of little arty details and positive messages.
I chose this place because it has very good reviews about its vegetarian food, for dinner and breakfast 😋
The bunk beds have very high top beds, which is great for those sleeping at the bottom. Last night I was in a bottom bed with not enough room to sit up, and today I have plenty of room to spare.
So far I only slept on a top bed once, at Astorga. It wasn't as bad as I thought. It would have been different during my first week, when I was very disorganised and had to go looking for stuff every 5 minutes. Now I know exactly what I need, and where it is.

      Cacabelos

      August 3, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

The castle in Ponferrada is unfortunately closed on Mondays. Really an impressively well preserved structure that you can explore throughout… except on Mondays.

We have come down from the hills into a big wine growing valley called the Bierzo Valley. The main grapes grown here are Mencia, an offshoot of Cabernet, for reds and Godello for whites. Most of these wines are released “joven” or young. Meaning it’s from the current vintage and is released within a year to 18 mos. from creation. Some surprisingly good table wines for being so young.

Another disappointment today, we didn’t get to see the rumored alter statue of baby Jesus playing cards with St. Antony of Padua. After the day’s walk, we were just too tired to walk to the church.

Tomorrow we walk to Ambasmestas. And the following day, the dreaded pass going up into Galacia through O Cebreiro pass. It’s 2,300 ft. of vertical in the course of the day’s walk.
