We walked 12 miles today, beautiful today, found a fabulous park in Naverrete and church with spectacular alter and stained glass. We also walked along a lake and found some wildlife. Mom still hasn't found a man but she is still searching. The Bull greets you as you enter Navarrete.Read more

      The road to Santo Domingo

      September 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Our walk began early this morning. We departed before 630am to a thick cloud cover and complete darkness. Mark and I got separated in the dark but rejoined in time to see what awaited us on the horizon.

Living in LA, I'm accustomed to storms always moving to the East - away from me. The ocean is always to my back. My bias to this orientation led me to overlook that I was walking into the heart of that storm, directly to the West. As I watched it unfold on the horizon, I was reminded of Ukraine, watching explosions and hearing the rumble in the distant sky. But this is just a storm.

It hit us about an hour later when we were in the middle of a massive vineyard with no refuge on the horizon for miles in any direction. We were the tallest thing around. The rain came down like a deluge and overwhelmed all of our protective rain gear. We had no choice but to bow our heads, ask for God's protection and plow forward as fast as possible.

I've been in some sketchy situations traveling abroad and I can honestly say I've never been scared until today. It's remarkable how powerful and humbling nature is in the face of our own limited potency. I was reminded of Martin Luther nearly being struck by lightning and begging God to save him. But there is real power in humility. There is real power in trusting that you are protected as you walk through troubled times.

We made it safely to Najera about 1,5 hours later. We took refuge in a cafe and assessed our damages. Passport - soaked and deformed. My Pilgrim credential ruined. I trusted my rain gear. Socks and shoes completely soaked. They will likely take days to dry out. But we're alive and fine apart from the bruised ego.

And I will never forget this morning as long as I live.

      Najere (10.3km / 190km)

      April 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today was half walk / half rest. Our walk was mostly walking through vineyards with some lovely cloud formations. A relaxing walk! We even had a song just for us from a busker en route!
We arrived in Najare as a medieval festival was starting. They had period dressing, games, food and the odd parade. It was still going strong as we headed home from dinner for bed. Some lovely and not so lovely local delicacies. The chorizo burger and Santiago cake hit the spot but not sure about the “pig cheek”!
We went to Sunday mass at 1pm in yet another impressive local church. We visited the Monasterio de Santa María la Real which was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th. We were able to go into the cloisters, incredibly high ceiling church and the sepulchre (tomb).
We caught up for drinks and dinner with 2 new sets of pilgrims. It’s amazing how, in the middle of a busy town you can spot a fellow pilgrim and you can just go and invite yourself to join them!

      Until tomorrow …

      Ventosa to Nájera

      October 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The climb to Alto de San Anton was not difficult, and there was a long gradual descent to the river valley below. Mostly through more Rioja vineyards. Sue finally broke down and grabbed a bunch of grapes to eat. I told her the Nájera police arrested anybody entering town with blue or purple lips! :-)

A long walk across the valley floor seemed to last forever, but we made it to our hostel for tonight!

Be met a nice bicycle Pilgrim from Brazil and bumped into a couple cycling, with a friend driving their camper van, who met met a few days ago.

Update: Rioja apparently has Frontons! And when we first walked up the street to our Hostel, I did not notice the sandstone cliff at the end of the street!

      Ventosa Hilltop Church

      October 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We walked up to the top of Ventosa's steep hill. The village church was locked up, but the views from the top were great. Back to the east, we can see Navarrete. To the west, Alto de San Anton, which we still need to climb.

There was a weird sculpture up there that had a skull in it!

One last final photo of the Church as we walked away from town.

      Azofra

      September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Day 11-Ventosa

      September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Pretty easy walk today, although it turned out to be 14 miles instead of 10.5. We tried to leave early today but the breakfast buffet didn't start until 7am and you know my priorities. We even snuck jamón y queso sandwiches in my bag for snack later.

The walk out of Logroño took us past a Guardia Civil base so we walked in and asked if they had a sello (stamp) for pilgrims. They did and were very nice to us. They take pilgrim safety seriously.

The rest of the walk was pretty flat and took us around a lake where we met Marcelino at his donativo stand. We made it to Navarrete before the rain and ate our sandwiches among the other pilgrims outside next to the church.

The alterpiece of this church is really impressive. I put a 1€ coin in a box to illuminate it. Spectacular comes to mind. I'll have to do some research to find out how such a small town has such an impressive church.

We continued our way to Ventosa, our destination for the night, through vineyards loaded with grapes. It sprinkled most of the way so we covered our packs but didn't bother with our rain jackets or umbrella. The spinkles felt good and helped us stay cool.

We got to Ventosa at 1:30pm, earlier than our normal end of walk. We shared a yummy pizza at the Buen Camino cafe then checked into our place. It's a nice room with a gorgeous bathroom and there's a comfortable shared livingroom with tea available. Perfect since now the rain is coming down hard. Dinner tonight is a salad and chicken paella.

      Op weg naar Nájera

      May 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more
