      Attica21 Vigo 4 Superior

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Day 9 - Baiona to Vigo

      April 20 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today we all woke up a little grumpy and indecisive. Where to find breakfast, what side of the street to walk on, panicked because we had not booked accommodations yet in Santiago and then the worst, what route to take today.

We chose to do the coastal route of the Portuguese Camino because who wouldn’t want to walk on the coast for two weeks. But we soon discovered that there are many options along the way. Most days we have chosen the road less traveled and glad we did. It is always harder, with more climbing, but usually gets you out of the direct sun and has better views. Today the decision was like being asked what method of execution we preferred 🥴

Tom finally veered to the right and once again we found ourselves on the road less traveled. But that is where we find all the pretty (old) stuff that peaks our interest; doors, gates, walls, forests, flowers etc. That is where locals shout “Buen Camino!” with enthusiasm from their verandas and store fronts as you pass by, even though they have probably said it a thousand times to a thousand pilgrims in their lifetime. Do they know they are a huge encouragement? Some do because they have probably walked their own Camino but I think most just have the innate gift of encouragement. Either way, somedays it is all you need to hear to continue to put one foot in front of the other until you reach your destination for the day.

Tonight we are in the big city of Vigo in a sweet little apartment. Showers and laundry are done and we have a little energy left to explore. 11 miles to Vigo and a taxi ride through the city to our apartment. Tomorrow is another day. 🇪🇸 ❤️

      Complementario!

      July 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We had some advice early on in our Camino from an albergue host… “always take the Complementario way”! In other words the scenic route! Today it means walking 1km farther, but avoiding an industrial section of the walk! Worth it! Now for a churro and ice tea break!Read more

      Cantina San Miguel

      March 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Lunch of tuna empanada, anchovy olives, frittata, and hot ginger tea. We are so cold, wet, and my feet ache. The rain somehow makes it more thrilling, but I'm starting to feel a bit delirious.

What we've seen... calla lillies in the wild, surfers, avocado tree, lemon trees, orange trees and blossoms, wisteria, jasmine blossoming, sheep, little dogs in raincoats, purple sand.

The coastal route takes us on the beach at turns down steep rocks, through the sand, and then back up to the street.

We have another 10 km to go.

      Enchanted Eucalyptus Forest

      March 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

We thought we were walking 26.9 km today but it seems like it's going to be more than that

I have my phone in airplane mode most of the time to avoid data roaming charges, so I'm oblivious to where I am and where I'm going. Which is okay.

The group separated today into 3 groups, not on purpose; it just happened. I ended up in the last group probably because i was taking so many pictures. Comparing stories later, it's crazy how our routes and experiences differed.

We ended up on a forest trail surrounded by eucalyptus trees. The moment we stepped in the fragrance embraced and surrounded us. The bark of these trees were peeling down to reveal the most beautiful colors in the bark.

We came across a waterfall as well. The whole experience was magical and revived me to keep walking.

As I was walking and trying to do the math about how many kilometers had been walked and how many were left, it just wasn't adding up for me. I felt something was definitely off, but regardless, as long as we were headed in the right direction, that was all that mattered.

As we exited the enchanted forest, we were tested with a hard decision. Which way do we go? The signs pointed in multiple directions. I don't have service here, so I let them figure it out. This is so not like me as I'm usually the one reading the maps and sorting the directions.

Anyway, who knows what happened. But we are so grateful for the spaces we experienced even if they weren't the most direct way.

      Vigo

      June 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      A 3 choc donut breakfast!

      May 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Well, there might have been a Snickers involved, too😱🙄😅.
After last night's paucity of food (apart from a tapa) we were very much looking forward to this morning's breakfast. It was going to be huge! We were having the lot - Spanish croissants, orange juice, tostadas, you name it, we were hungry!
The reality was, of course, hugely different 🙄😅. Every one of the cafés at Patos Beach was closed, so we walked on... Surely one of the small villages or hamlets would have a café of some sort, if not a shop? How on earth did residents shop, otherwise? Again, we were hugely disappointed 😕🤭. Not one place to buy even a chocolate bar until we reached Oia, approximately 2 hours away! And then, the only shop we could find was a Tabac. So snacks it was!
Now, chocolate donuts are a bit of a ritual on our caminos - I don't think there's been one camino when we haven't indulged in just one of them. They're cheap (usually!), pretty tasteless, nutritionally questionable but very welcome when you've been walking for a while. So our shopping basket included a pack of 4 donuts (and a Snickers).
We walked to the beach and deposited ourselves in some shade.
The donuts made an appearance and I quickly devoured mine 😋😋😋. On offering them around, however, no-one seemed too interested!😱😱😱. How could that be? This was a tradition!!! Well, it was in my world! Fortunately, OurJan came to my rescue and ate one of the remaining 3 donuts, which no-one else was interested in. There were still 🍩🍩 left, though, so it was eat them, pack them or fling them... You can imagine which option I chose🍩🍩! Oh, and the Snickers... of course! 😱😅😆. Whilst we were scoffing our food, we watched a seniors football game on the beach, the pitch being moved whenever the sand became too soft🤣.
With all that sugar, I was fair flying for much of the walk ahead. It was a really pleasant walk along the coastline and sometimes along the road until we reached Bouzas for lunch (something a little healthier this time). All the time we were skimming beaches and coastal woodland areas that offered us small amounts of shade, which were perfect for a really enjoyable walk into Vigo. The walk skirted the industrial area which was interesting in its own way, especially as there were such wonderful smells from the jasmine that had woven itself through the fences.
We found out that evening that today was a feria, a holiday in Galicia, celebrating its literature. That explained the lack of food available and the activities going on around us. These included a fun run and what seemed to be a sporty day on the beach, and best of all a personal performance from a lovely chap we'd met earlier in the day (video attached). There are islands off the coast which were visited by Jules Verne and are where he had his ideas for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea!
Our accommodation for the two nights in Vigo is a fabulous apartment with a washing machine - hurrah, no more hand washed clothes smelling of shampoo😆. The entry system is all led from your phone, which is scary when you're a technophobe, but we're in and going nowhere. It's a chance for our feet to recover a little before we head off to Santiago de Compostela on Friday (I think, I'm not sure of the days anymore!)🤣

      Santiago --> Cies --> Vigo

      August 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      [Julian, más abajo en español]

Wow! So viele Erlebnisse, Ups and Down, Begegnungen.
