      Meseta Part - 1

      September 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Days 22 to 24 (Castellanos de Castro, Boadilla del Camino, Villalcazar de Sirga) - the Camino is classified into three sections. The first tests (and may break) your physical well being, the second the mental and the third your spiritual. I am now at the start of the second phase and I can attest to the first. My knees were problematic right through phase 1. I would start off ok every morning but then go into a shuffle where I had to use my arms and the hiking poles to take the weight off my knees by early afternoon. Luckily I decided that I had to do something to fix them - and I did. Most mornings I get up early and do some stretches, muscle flossing (google it) and squats. Gradually the knees have improved, better every day. The last three days I’ve been on the meseta and I’ve walked 30, 29 and 18.5 km respectively with some ease. Today I found 18.5 kms easy and reached my destination at 1pm - really surprised myself.
Everyone says the meseta is boring and difficult to traverse. I have found it to be quite ok so far. Each day I’ve started off at a fast pace for the first third and then dropped off to a slower pace. For example this morning I set off with these two Aussie guys - pilgrims, and went 10kms to Fromista at a very brisk pace to see the amazing Church of Saint Martin of Tours in Fromista and then have a second breakfast at a lovely little cafe in the church square before continuing on slower. Tomorrow I am walking with a Korean gentleman who I met at the local grocery store in Villacalzar de Sirga. He too is going to walk the 32 kms to Terradillos. Hope I make it!!
As you can see from the photos - the towns, the churches, the countryside are starting to look similar. Perhaps this is why people get bored on the meseta. I have a few more days of this and will tell you how I feel as the days go on. I think I just love to walk, and hope that feeling stays with me.
      More next time!

      Frómista to Villalcázar de Sirga

      May 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Met Rowena in Frómista then bumped into Katie (Can). Also met Book and Ying from Thailand so walked with them at first.
Easy distance today so walked at half pace. Met Gerrard from Cork and Caterina from Sweden/Switzerland on the way too so ended up all walking together.
Got to destination and met Charlie from Englandshire, Steffi from Germany and a French guy that walked from his own home 400km before I started 🤣 Evening meal was shite but no other options.🤣Some folk anxious as tomorrow there in an 18km stretch with no towns/water etc. Weather getting hot. I'll need to buy more water tomorrow and carry it......water is heavy tho.

      Solitude sur la Meseta Centrale

      May 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

      Buen Camino 😀

      Mono toune et paix

      May 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

      in Carrión de los Condes

      April 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Following my longest day, i had a short day - only about 13 miles. Still, i did not feel well, not just physically, but also unmotivated. I simply did not want to walk today. Walking 13 mi when there’s not even an ounce in you that wants to do it is nearly an unmatched mental challenge 😂. But now I am in Carrión (which is at the 400km mark i think), staying in a 4 star hotel that used to be a monastery that my mom booked for me saying it was her favorite stay on the Camino, so all is well. :) also in choosing my pics, i realized I didn’t take a lot today. I think I begrudgingly stomped my way here all 13 miles and forgot to enjoy it. 😅Read more

Day 16 - A long but “easy” day

      October 1, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

“Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” – Robert Schuller

Day 16 - Boadilla del Camino to Villalcázar de Sigra - 20.3km

Looking back on today, this was a great one!
I didn’t have the best sleep, but it was ok. I actually got up for the first time on this journey, knowing I was walking and not worried about it. It’s hard to describe, but every single day, I have dreaded the walk. I just haven’t wanted to do it as it’s been more of a chore than a pleasure. I’m not yet at the pleasure point, but I wasn’t dreading it - and it was an 18.8km walk. As it turns out, we took a variant so we could walk by a river as opposed to the road, and it added over a km to the walk. Made for a much nicer walk though.

When I went down to the bar for a tea, I was with a friend of a few days, James from Nee Jersey. We had our drinks and decided to walk together. He’s not an overly fast walker either and generally does shorter distances - which is why we have seen each other the last 3 days. Off we go at 8am. Me to Villalcázar de Sigra and James to Carrion de Los Condes -25km. He wasn’t looking forward to that, let me tell you!!

There were no hills today. The way was basically flat and the first 5.7 km was mostly along a canal, so quite pretty. We decided to push on a couple of km as it was still early and we figured we would get a drink at the next stop, which we did. At this point, we took the variant and added over 1.5km to our journey. This was only ok because rather than walk beside a busy road, we got to go on a path between farm fields and then along a river. Much nicer. Stopped again at noon for another drink and a snack before pushing on ti the last 5km.

In no time at all, we were at my destination. It really is so nice to walk and chat with someone. And raven better, we kept a good pace and did over 20km in about 4.5 hrs walking time. Pretty damned happy with that!

We grabbed a drink here and parted ways. Jenny and Carolyn (from AUS) were here too and ended up staying at the same Albergue as I’m at since the couldn’t find the Municipal Albergue. I love these women! Sisters from Australia who are both retired nurses and in their late 60s. They are a blast! We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening together - just like last night. Only difference is there was no pilgrims dinner tonight. In fact, dinner was a bottle of wine shared by Carolyn and I, a potato chip mix and bag of mixed nuts (that will haunt me tomorrow!). We did manage a late lunch of wine and tapas first, but it wasn’t much. The only bar here was closing at 5, the only restaurant (Michelin Star no less) was fully booked out and our only option was the small grocery store. So, we made the best of it LOL. I’ve had worse meals….and worse company.

Actually loved this day and I hope I have many more like them.

Tomorrow is a short 6km day and I will be 2 nights in a private room with a bathtub. I can’t wait!! Hopefully meeting up with Nancy, Dave and Louie tomorrow will be so good to see them again!

      Carrion de los Condes

      September 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Pierwsze miasteczko do którego doszliśmy to Fromista. Pierwszy to ośmiokątny kościół Sw. Marcina z XI wieku.

      Another short stop

      August 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

When the variant route rejoined the standard one, we stopped to look at an old church. I had another little bite to eat.
The rest of the walk to Carrión de los Condes was in the sun, with a noisy road on our side.Read more

Camino Day 5 - Calzadilla de laCueza

      August 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Another group dinner last night with old friends and new ones. The food was ok but the company was fantastic. Three courses, plus wine for 14 euro.
We had prebooked tonight's accommodation along with all our new friends as it was Aussie Anna's (who lives in Barcelona) birthday today, and we wanted to celebrate together.
So we left a little later, 7:30 ish, and headed for Carrion de los Condes for breakfast. The 4 km walk there was extremely painful, to the point I was considering a bus. At the stop, I performed some required surgery, along with some great pain killers and felt fine to continue.
5 km's down the road we started walking on an old Roman road that was 2000 years old. Could not see any resemblance to Romans whatsoever. This road was 11.5 km long and felt it would go on forever. Straight, flat, no trees, just small gravel that found its way into my shoes.
      This was a tough day.
Hollie had a tough day as well, in tears for about 2 hours, not from the walk, but we think a "Camino cleanse". All good now.
We finally made it to our albergue, WHICH HAD A POOL!!
So about 10 of us made here for tonight to celebrate, eat and drink too Anna's birthday.
Regardless of how much crap you go through each day, at the end, you are still grateful for the experience and the people around you.
      We have now completed 111kms.
      Not bad, not at all.
      Bring on tomorrow.

It was a long but very pleasant walk, 23k today. There was a village 5 k from where we started, then nothing until we reached our destination so it we were thrilled we saw the pop-up cafe.
You can see by the pics what the conditions were like.
