      To Dos Hermanas (41 km, 150 m)

      April 22 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This is a longer day than I would have wanted to do, but cascading events made it the only choice if I wanted to walk the whole way.

Jumping ahead to Thursday— we have train tickets to take us from Sevilla, where this camino ends, to Ponferrada, where the Invierno begins. Our train leaves at 9:30, so the only way to have a good chunk of time in Sevilla was to have a short day tomorrow, which in turn required a long day today.

It was hard for me, even with essentially no elevation gain. The first part was lovely — rural and mostly off road. I had a long break in a charming plaza in Utrera and began the second half about noon. A good chunk was through the very shady and quiet Cañada Real, but the last 9 km were out in the sun, on a dirt road, alongside the train tracks. It was a case of mind over matter, step by step. I got to our little apartment by about 4:45, pretty wiped out. We are now going for pizza to a highly rated pizzeria owned by an Italian.

But having a 15 km day tomorrow into beautiful Sevilla will be one reward for this penitential day.
And the other reward is that I now have proof positive that there will be no more 40 km days for me. It’s good to have a reality check, and to get a good understanding of what makes sense for this old lady.

And here are two good tidbits— I heard from my friend in Santiago that my duffel bag finally arrived. And my power bank looks like it has revived itself!

      Cudillero, Spain

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Spent most of a day in the charming coastal town of Cudillero perched on steep slopes above the narrow bay. Except for limited vehicle access at the bottom of the village all the homes perched on the hills are accessed only by narrow stone walkways and steps. We took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up by the parochial cemetery - which, to our surprise, provided a perfect view and access to the town by walking down hundreds of stone steps to the center of town. Split a large sea bass for lunch. We are skipping dinner! Hiked up to the Mirador de la Estrecha for beautiful views of the town and harbor. Very pretty place!Read more

Day 12 - Pontevedra to Armenteira

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

The morning started very busy with pilgrims again all jockeying for position on the road out of Pontevedra. We were happy when we got to veer off on the Spiritual Variant route. It was a beautiful walk with very few pilgrims. Maybe that is because there was a huge climb on this route today. In fact Tom had me so nervous about it that we decided it was best to pay a transfer service to move our heavy packs for the day. He told me it was going to be the equivalent of climbing Mt. Lassen in the middle of the day. Climbing Mt. Lassen is one of my least favorite things to do. So we readied ourselves with just the essentials; hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, windbreaker, water, phone, poles, our walking credentials and headed out. We made it to an early lunch stop to fuel up for what promised to be a tough afternoon climb. But once we were out of the steep village streets and onto a wide, mostly dirt, mostly shaded road, it was awesome. About 72 degrees today with a cool light breeze. Yes it was a hill, but it was either such an easy grade or we are in amazing shape. Either way, it was a lovely climb (rough downhill) and it dumped us off right into a bar for drinks and a stroll around the Monastery grounds.

14.5 miles today, on a not so terrifying climb. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. Only 3 days left of this adventure. 🇪🇸

Een iets te uitdagende route voor dag 1

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Boy was I wrong.

      Leaving Santiago

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

After doing some laundry and having a wonderful shower, my sister Renee and I did the rooftop tour of Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. We took the narrow staircase up to the rooftop. The stairs were a breeze after walking the Camino. The views were spectacular and I enjoyed seeing the other Pilgrims who completed their Camino basking in the sun and laying against their backpack in the courtyard. We literally walked on the shingles and tried not to get blown off the roof. It was so beautiful to look out over Santiago. We rented a car and are heading to Fatima. The adventures continue…..Read more

      Redondela

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

17km including >400m elevation. An early start with quite a few fellow pilgrims. We quickly left the city of O Porriño and trekked through rural areas in quite crisp but sunny conditions. Our first stop after about 5km was at Mos, where church and surrounds were in recently cut stone. Coffee and juice fortified us for a long climb up over the ridge, on roads and through forest. A feature is the extent of small vineyards and produce fields associated with houses, and stone construction everywhere. We had a steep decline into Redondela, stopped for a simple lunch, then had an early check-in and rest.Read more

      The End!

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

Muxia is the end point of this camino for me. I won't bore anyone with further post about getting back. I may stay here a few days, before heading back to Santiago and then Porto. Muxia is a stunningly beautiful place. Have a look at the pics and vids.

      Pilgrim out.

      Santa Elena, Andalusien

      April 22 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Read more

      The final chapter begins

      April 22 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

We began the day with a very cool walk along the highway in the dark and into a wonderful valley of farms and villages. Sadly, it seemed that each village was a remembrance of the past. Most buildings were for sale or abandoned. Mid morning, we reached Samos, and it's monestary from 700 AD. During our walk into Sarria, we joined a recent college grad from Florida and a Spanish grandfather who has walked many of the Caminos (more than 20 times). The vibe in Sarria was different as this is the jumping off point for those that want to complete the last 100k to Santiago. I miss our travel companions and who to meet others during our final week.Read more
