Sarria to Portomarin - part one

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Martina is going to be absolutely fine, and could actually host a training session I'd push to be mandatory for half the people I've been with for a month. Her alarm was silent, she took everything into the kitchen to pack up with no fuss, and she has a small backpack. A+ my darling.

She's nestled sliiiiiightly under my wing, she checked I was going to have breakfast at the hostel before she committed to it ("ok I will too", with a nervous smile), and I could see she was a bit hesitant about setting off so I pushed her out of the nest with a firm Buen Camino (BC) and assurances we'd see each other later. This only *might* be true but it's what she needed to hear at the time.

Harbouring a slight sense of foreboding about this turning into a theme park, some sort of conveyor belt Camino, I headed out of Sarria. There are so many people compared to what I'm used to. None of these new fucks are saying BC which really irks me but in the spirit of it all I'm being VERY laid back about them breaking the rules I've invented.

Other ways in which I am right and they are wrong include (all of them but specifically) walking on the LEFT side on the road and the RIGHT on the trail, letting people pass, stopping at the second or later bar in a town not always the first, taking your pack off before going in, looking for a sign inside that says aesos not baño (it's never baño) talking at normal human volumes, and greeting the locals.

I've been thinking about what parts of this experience I can carry forward into day to day life, where I might not have a spare five to eight hours a day to go walking. A big source of enjoyment here - and one I knew I'd appreciate before I even started - is the simplicity, the reduced number of decisions I need to make each day. For example in the morning I put on my one outfit, use the bare minimum toiletries, pack up my small bag, walk outside and look for an arrow.

I reckon if I start picking my outfits the night before and set up a better drop zone, I can achieve this efficiently at home, and maybe get a few kilometres walk in before work, go the long way? My body clock would currently give me tons of time, let's see if it resets once I'm out of bunk beds before we get ahead of ourselves though.

      Gernika-Lumo

      Day 7
What a beautiful day! Perfect walking temperature, neither hot nor cold, and constantly changing but always always always pleasant, awe-inspiring, delightful, superb landscape, up and down hills, along the river, through villages, beside churches, through forests, and in and out of cafes!
Nearly 30km/19miles, no great effort. My favourite day so far.

I had thought to not post today, apart from the footprint, but somehow I'm feeling brighter and more at ease today and I'm inclined to make at least these few comments.

Perhaps this has to do with the conversations and friendships of the day. With Heike, in any case, thanks Heike, just doing these days together. And with Adrian, from Ireland/ France, with whom the conversation went unexpectedly deep as we discovered a shared worldview and mutual openness to explore what this means to us.
Kyesoo called me his angel, after I helped him book accommodation for tonight when he thought there was nothing available for miles.
Igor, Poland, and Luca from Belgium.
      Natalie, Belgium.
George, again, and of course 'our' Italians, Fiorella and Sergio, who we seem to be leapfrogging every day. Great fun.

Day 13 - Armenteira - Vilanova de Arousa

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

After a great dinner at the Casa Rural B&B last night of garbanzo bean stew and fried artichokes followed by homemade coffee and herb liqueurs, we got 10 hours of sleep and woke up today to a light breakfast from our hosts. Today was our second day along the spiritual variant. I have to say if you’re a; nature lover, person of faith, enjoy architecture, crave fine foods and local wines, like a physical challenge or seek solitude, the spiritual route delivers. It is well worth the additional mileage and a couple extra days.

For most of the day we walked along some form of water. It started with a series of cascading waterfalls then turned into a quiet stream, a larger river and finally along a beautiful bay into the town of Vilanova de Arousa. It was a wonderful day of hiking that totaled 15.5 miles. Tomorrow we take a boat upriver to start a shorter walk before our final day into Santiago!

Don’t miss the video at the end. We were invited into a little chapel along the way where a trio sang us a song to bless our day 👏

      Viana to Navarrete

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today as we passed through the very large city of Logroño, we left the beautiful basque region of Navarra, and entered the region of La Rioja.

La Rioja is the second smallest autonomous community in Spain and the smallest along the Camino Francés. This region has also has made its mark on the world as one of Spain's largest producers of wine. We will enjoy it while it lasts, which is only about 60km worth of walking along the camino. 🍷Read more

To SEVILLA!!! (17 km, no elevation!)

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we had a really nice walk. Entrances into big cities are usually kind of ugly and garbage filled, but this one was very pleasant. It took us a while to get out of Dos Hermanos, which is a bedroom town for Sevilla now. But once we were out., we walked through nice fields, until we got to the outskirts of Sevilla. No industry, no illegal garbage dumps, no big commercial areas. There is a huge military cuartel (barracks) in a beautiful building about 5 km outside of town. We had a nice chat with the guard who explained that both the Guardia Civil and other military personnel live in these barracks.

The Camino essentially took us down a promenade that used to be filled with mansions. Some are still standing, but many have been replaced by modern buildings.

We went past the soccer stadium, and into the beautiful Maria Luisa park, where we had our first bit of evidence that Sevilla is mobbed with tourists, From the Plaza de España, we made our way to the main tourist center and went to the Cathedral for our pilgrim stamp.

We are staying in the same hotel I have stayed in twice, when I walked the Via de la Plata. It’s still a one star hotel, but it’s prices are no longer one star level. Sevilla has become very expensive. I last stayed here in 2013 or 14, and the room that I’m paying €110 for today cost 30 or 10 years ago

Luckily, we bought tickets months ago to visit the Real Alcázar, can’t wait!

      100 Mile Celebration!! 🥾🍾🙌🏼🇪🇸🎊

      April 23 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

      Villamayor de Monjardín to Viana
      Day #7 - 100 mile celebration!!! 🎉Today was a total grind but we knocked out a whopping 32k (20 miles!) 👊🏻

Despite our initial plans yesterday, we were feeling pretty good when we reached the 20k town of Torres del Rio so we decided to push another 10k more through the wind & rain to the next town of Viana. Little did we know how strenuous that last 10.4k would be with many steep ups and downs along the way.

Our bodies and minds are spent so tonight we treated ourselves to a private hotel room tonight with fuzzy blanks and a noon checkout!!! It even has a bathtub… oh the luxury!!!

      Day 6 Markina-Xemein

      April 23 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 10 °C

The cold and rain invited us to take a different and less challenging route than the Camino classic stage, along the coast to Ondarroa and then by bus up to Markina. I didn't expect these temperatures and may need to find an extra top layer if the weather continues like this.

A most unusual church building at the Ermita de San Miguel de Arretxinaga - why these rocks?

Heike had booked an Airbnb apartment with a kitchen, so for supper we ate in, Karaoke fish from the fishmonger in Mutriku, and scallops in the shell: I now have my pilgrims' symbol to carry!
Uninspired to paint. Squeezed out some 'thunks' I've been sort of thinking instead.

      To Dos Hermanas (41 km, 150 m)

      April 22 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This is a longer day than I would have wanted to do, but cascading events made it the only choice if I wanted to walk the whole way.

Jumping ahead to Thursday— we have train tickets to take us from Sevilla, where this camino ends, to Ponferrada, where the Invierno begins. Our train leaves at 9:30, so the only way to have a good chunk of time in Sevilla was to have a short day tomorrow, which in turn required a long day today.

It was hard for me, even with essentially no elevation gain. The first part was lovely — rural and mostly off road. I had a long break in a charming plaza in Utrera and began the second half about noon. A good chunk was through the very shady and quiet Cañada Real, but the last 9 km were out in the sun, on a dirt road, alongside the train tracks. It was a case of mind over matter, step by step. I got to our little apartment by about 4:45, pretty wiped out. We are now going for pizza to a highly rated pizzeria owned by an Italian.

But having a 15 km day tomorrow into beautiful Sevilla will be one reward for this penitential day.
And the other reward is that I now have proof positive that there will be no more 40 km days for me. It’s good to have a reality check, and to get a good understanding of what makes sense for this old lady.

And here are two good tidbits— I heard from my friend in Santiago that my duffel bag finally arrived. And my power bank looks like it has revived itself!

    • Flamingos

      April 23 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C
