      Mürren

      August 18, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Low cloud and questionable visibility changed our plans to go up the Schilthorn 2,970m. So we took the cog train up to Grütschalp and then walked up to Mürren and Gimmelwald with views of the Jungfrau and Eiger when the clouds parted.

Lots of spectacular waterfalls as we made our way back down the valley floor including the Trümmelbach - a series of 10 glacier waterfalls inside the mountain, draining up to 20,000 litres a second from glaciers of the Mönch, Eiger & Jungfrau.

      Murren- up in the Alps

      September 13, 2017 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

We are now staying for 2 nights up in the Swiss Alps. To reach Murren we travelled first by cablecar then mountain train. Not possible to take the car so we've left it in Lauterbrunnen car park. We then walked to the close by village of Gimmelwald. Neither Murren or Gimmelwald have cars (except for a couple of locals) and are everything you would expect to see in a Swiss Alpine village. Surrounded by snow capped mountains, chilly fresh air, goats & cows ringing their bells and amazing views! to the big 3 peaks- Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau! Snow is forecast for tomorrow! Murren is also where you catch the cable car to Schilthorn- the mountain peak with the restaurant where they filmed James Bond's 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. Maybe some 007 action awaits us at the top of the Schilthorn??Read more

      The pace has infected us...

      July 28, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

At some point yesterday, a grand scheme was hatched to visit a place known for its beauty and cultural significance in a nearby town. But at 2 am, I awoke and realized that with only a few days left I cannot leave this valley. Our life here happens at walking speed, except for our few failed attempts to go to a big city of say, you know, 5000 people. When we do ride the bus, it is only to Lauterbrunnen, which now feels like a trip to New York, though it has only 2500 people. Even the cog wheel trains into the mountains run on a gear.

Nothing is fast here in the valley. Nothing is supersized. I cook in our little Swiss sized kitchen with a mini refrigerator and no microwave. If you want bread, you can go to the camping store across the road and order it to be delivered fresh the next day. Across the street, the farmer sells the fresh milk he gets from the cows we visit every day.

I am already anxious about re- entry. Usually as we approach the end of a vacation, I am anxious to come home. This is the first place I have ever been where I don't want to leave. I told Tim before we left that my greatest fear in coming here was not of the paraglider but that I would never want to leave. That fear had been realized. I am living in the Elven kingdom here.

So today, as I write this to you with tears I can't explain, I decided to send you pictures of our home away from home.

You, our friends, our family, are what calls us back to our abode... but in my heart, this is the only home I will ever know ... it took a lifetime to find it.

      Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

      June 2, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This morning we woke up at a sparrow's fart to travel to Jungfraujoch - The Top of Europe. It's at an altitude of 3,400 metres, and today was a lovely warm 0.8 c. Getting there early was fabulous as the sky was clear of cloud cover and we pretty much had the place to ourselves, apart from the obligatory Chinese tour groups. It's a pretty incredible view from up there and there were quite a few viewpoints, an ice gallery and best of all, the world's highest chocolate shop!
RM Williams boots are very versatile - you can wear them to the office then out for a drink and off to a restaurant. The one place they can't take you is the snow. So Graham slid his way up and slid his was down the viewpoint. When he went ass up I did what any good wife would do and cracked up laughing. The second time he went ass up I took the camera from him as I don't want a broken camera.
From there we trained it back to Wengen and then hiked down the mountain to Lauterbrunnen.
When people say Switzerland is expensive they should say it is very, VERY expensive. But hiking is free (remember, we are hikers now), and there is free water and toilets everywhere. What more could you ask for? Our first night we had sausage, onion gravy and potato rosti and it was $32 each. We now go to the co-op and buy local cheese and meats, salad and Swiss chocolate and eat like kings on our balcony. There is no fridge in our room so Graham fills the bathroom sink with cold water and next thing, cold wine. Top it off with the best restaurant view in the world.

      Schilthorn

      June 3, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Were up at our usual ridiculous hour and on the first cable car up to the Schilthorn, which was made famous from the filming of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Graham was suitably attired in his shiny new hiking boots he bought after yesterday’s debacle in the snow in his RM Williams. I think the view from Schiltorn was even better than Jungfraujoch as there were mountains on all sides as far as the eye could see. We could even see Mont Blanc, which is 750 kilometres away.
From there we went into the 007 Museum which was incredibly well done. Such interesting stories about the filming and people working on the movie. They were filming for six months and all stayed in Murren (where we are staying) so it must have been humming. Even the toilets were in the 007 theme. Above the men’s urinals was a sign – Shake, not stir.
And the best thing was – it was all free on our Swiss Travel Pass. A cheap day in Switzerland – never!
Stopped in Berg on the way back down for Graham to do the thrill walk suspended off the side of the mountain. I had the thrill of eating a doughnut.

      Day 46: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

      August 5, 2017 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

What do you do while you're in Switzerland? You hike (and eat a lot of chocolate and cheese)!

So that's exactly what we did today. We took the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and hiked our way to Allmendhubel. The hike was challenging at times, but it turned out to be a really nice one. We had a gorgeous view of the Alps and saw plenty of cows. Apparently Switzerland has the happiest cows in the world.

When we got to Allmendhubel, we hung around in the Flower Park and were waiting to take the last cable car down to Mürren. The waitress said it would warn us when to get on, but it didn't, so we missed it and had to walk to 45 minutes down. It wasn't too bad. When we got to Mürren, we took the cable car down to Stechelberg and bussed it back to Lauterbrunnen.

Thank god we made it back in time to eat a cheese fondue. We wouldn't have wanted the cheese to go bad. ;) It turned out to be so good. It's a mixture of cheeses that they serve with bread, potatoes, chives, onions, garlic and mushrooms. We devoured the whole thing and I got a Swiss hot chocolate and a mini chocolate bar which were amazing too. Thank god I don't live in Switzerland. It would be very bad for my health and my wallet.

      The blooper video

      July 22, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Just walked back on the trail after our paraglide landing down the road from our home. Boy, ice cream never tasted so good. No pictures yet, but here’s the scoop. Leaving the cable car in Mürren, we hiked up a steep hillside to the launch area. Tim and his instructor had a flawless take off. I assured Buzz, my instructor, that I would follow all instructions and obviously had misunderstood one, so instead of launching we veered, got tangled up with each other and all the lines, and rolled down the meadow we had just. Climbed. But then we had a great take off for the 2nd attempt.

The winds were good and we floated, rising up and down, turning in tight swirls and slow circles. You fly over the tops of huge trees and along granite cliffs, past waterfalls and in sight of glaciers. It is like being a human drone. Buzz let me fly it for awhile...so beautiful.

I rate this experience even higher than swimming with Sharks. Unbelievable! Photos and video when we return!

      I hope someone knows CPR

      July 20, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

At last sighting in Birg, Tim was headed to the Skywalk, which is attached to the side of a cliff. I made it about 100 yards and abject terror took over. I took a pic of Tim before he turned the corner. Next stop Murren! Love having so many cable cars but I am ready to start walking downhill. You wouldn't believe how many people they cram in!Read more

      The very mountains shook...

      July 19, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Today, after I walked to the campground store across the street for coffee, we traveled 1/4 mile to the entrance to Trammelbach Falls. This is a World UNESCO site and the only waterfall in the world that falls INSIDE a mountain. After a short hike, you enter a cable car type elevator and go up six stories. From there, you hike straight up for four more stories inside the mountain, which is filled with mist and the deafening sound of the rushing water that has carved fantastic formations into the rock. Then you hike ten stories down passing through wet stairs in the center of the cliff and sunny places where the rock has worn through. The very mountain rumbled with the force of the pounding rivers that meet there. Our ten day travel pass was purchased today, so tomorrow we begin adventuring in the Alps. This gets us on almost all buses, trains, cable cars, funiculars and boats for “free”. Next stop “Top of the World”.Read more
