Who's been sitting in my chair?

Another beaut of a day in Geneva. Woke up to an incredible view of the lake as the water taxis opened for business.

There were people doing Tai chi on the dock some cold water swimmers and runners all taking advantage of the weather.

Took a trip to the Botanical gardens, the United Nations Building/entrance and found the "Broken Chair" at the Places de Nations. Standing 12 metres high on its 3 legs, the sculpture symbolizes both fragility and strength, imbalance and stability, violence and dignity. The work by renowned sculptor Daniel Berset, is made of 5.5 tins of wood and has a simple message : remember the victims of landmines & urge your government to promote a ban on landmines.

Strolling around the lake, which by the way is as clear as Mauritian waters, we came across loads of swans .... wait..... swans on a lake ... Swan Lake?? 🤣 Visited the man-made Beach on the opposite side of the lake where parents and kids have ball every afternoon.

And then the Viking had to try "Initiation au lancer de hache" Basically axe throwing, beacuse thats what one does when in Geneva ...

Little bite of Pulpo (octopus) and potato salad for lunch with a chilled bottle of Rosé.

If this is a cold, winter holiday... count me in! (she says as the weather starts to slowly change) ❄️Read more

Tour of the United Nations Geneva

Starting the day with a tour of the United Nations in Geneva. This place was originally home to the League of Nations between WW1 and WW2 but subsequently became the home of a number of the institutions that make up the modern day UN.

After full airport style security and an immigration style security check (no I’m not a terrorist, no I haven’t been to the likes of Syria), I was in and able to explore the grounds before heading inside for my guided tour.

The tour was fanatic and due to it being a quiet day at the UN we were able to visit all the main rooms! This included the home of the original general assembly and the original offices of the League of Nations. This compared to the newest state room, which is home to an amazing ceiling of art. Changing colour we’re ever you are in the room, the art work is designed to show that the same thing can be different depending on your location. Thus emulating the most important thing about the UN, the difference of opinion and the need to reconciliation and agreement.

The tour finished with a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains leading to Mount Blanc, oh and fair load of snow!Read more

The International Red Cross Museum

Next stop of the day is the International Red Cross Museum.

Directly opposite the main building of the UN is the International Red Cross museum, a fantastic museum full of the history of this international institution.

The highlight was the original Geneva Convention document and the archive of World War I prisoner documents.

Definitely worth visiting and increased my knowledge on the history work of the Red Cross!Read more

27. Etappe zickige Schweiz

Nach dem Frühstück wollen wir noch ein paar spanische Mitbringsel im Supermarkt besorgen und das Auto tanken…
In den kommenden Ländern ist der Diesel erheblich teurer.
In den ersten Bergen der Pyrenäen geht es mit heftigen Dauerregen und starkem Wind nur langsam voran.
In Frankreich machen wir nur einen kleinen Stopp auf einem Rastplatz. Typisch für hier sind die vielen Automaten in den Raststätten, die viele heiße Getränke anbieten. Nach einem Automatencafe und einem leckeren Croissant geht es weiter😀.

Wir entschließen uns heute für die Strecke durch die Schweiz. …
Die uns nur widerspenstig empfängt 😬
1.- wurde ich an der der Grenze mit 57 (50) geblitzt 👍.
2.- wollte uns niemand eine Vignette für die Autobahnen verkaufen. Eine geschlagene Stunde bei gefühlten Null Grad sind wir an dem Grenzübergang von Haus zu Haus und Hütte zu Hütte gelaufen um eine Vignette zu kaufen.
Die Zollbeamten schickten uns immer wieder zu dem Verkaufshäuschen zurück, er wollte einfach nicht glauben, dass der Kollege schon Feierabend gemacht hat 😳. Nachdem er sich mit mir davon überzeugt hat verkauft er uns nun doch zähneknirschend eine Vignette. 👍

Erfreulicherweise und dank Park4night fanden wir noch einen wunderschönen Parkplatz für die Nacht, direkt am Genfer See. Leider war es mittlerweile schon dunkel geworden und wir konnten den schönen Ausblick nur bedingt genießen 😀.Read more

What a powerful museum. I was sad that the one day a year that I visit is the day the museum store does its inventory and was closed. Adel will have to do with a photo of a shirt.
