      An unexpected theme park

      November 21, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Packed up in our woody Switzerland style chalet on the edge of Sun Moon Lake. Very nice breakfast of mushroom fruit, sausage and boiled egg.
The plan was to walk to the cable car and go to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.

Cable car gave us some fantastic views over the Sun Moon lake. We walked down the hill being treated to an aboriginal dance and music show. Saw how they used to live in stone huts with wooden carvings everywhere. At the bottom of the hill was a theme park. Not what we were expecting, with big rides. Curly, Hannah and I went on one twice which took you 80m up then dropped you. Great fun.
With almost no one there, we got on and off most of the rides nice and quickly.
At 4pm we took the cable car back up to the top and down to our town. A quick beer to watch the sunset ove the lake and back to change. After an hour back at the hotel, we thought we would learn our lesson by heading out early for food.
No such luck with places closing at 6 all over the place.
One place was almost full so we went in there. Had a set menu for 7 for 5 of us. Lovely food including fried bananas, pepper beef and fish from the Sun Moon Lake. Stuffed! Back for some wine and a 58% bird seed wine to finish the night. Chriiiiiissstt.

      Lambai island

      November 22, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Got on the way for our 3 hour drive at about 10am. We were heading south to get a ferry to the island of Lambai. A small island off the South West coast of Taiwan.
Arrived and got straight on a fast boat, taking 25mins to get to the Island. Scoped out hiring scooters and bicycles, and settled on electric bikes.
The island is only 5k long so doesn't take long to get around. Checked into our accommodation and set off to get some dinner from the shop. Salad, hot dogs, sandwiches, beer, more beer and red wine. Made it down to the coast in time for sunset. I got in a quick drone flight whilst everyone else got the beers going. Shortly after the sun went down, we had to abandon the beach as the mosquitos were forming an organised attack, regardless of the deet.

Had some more food on the balcony overlooking the sea and the stars. Played cards until the bar opened at 8pm. Then proceeded to play pool until 10. Only people in the bar, which was probably quite lucky. At only a pound a beer it was a nice cheap evening.

      Lambai Island. South Side.

      November 24, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Started with a breakfast of chips and pancake with meat and veg. Curly couldn't hack it so made it her mission of the day to find fruit and flavoured ice.
We set off toward a walking path with caves made of coral. Pleasant walk but with sharp pointy rocks. Drove to the East coast for more swimming with turtles. Quite strong tide, so we swam against it and drifted back. Dad found an 'octopus', was in fact a rock...
Cycled to Black Devils Cave, where some Dutch were killed and their slaves freed to live amongst the rocks.
Fantastic ice smoothy, and amazingly intricate wooden carvings. From there went to get some salad lunch and onward to the beach below our accommodation. Big swell coming in. Dad and I went out. I did some body surfing with the camera. You needed to line up with the rows of coral to avoid being sliced on the rocks. Cool and fairly sketchy.
Back for a quick wash up and out to find some dinner.
We cycled to a DIY BBQ. Loads of food in freezers, where you help yourself and cook it yourself. Almost certainly all got food poisoning now, but we will find out tomorrow 😝. Nice and tasty though, but all fully stuffed!

      Liuqiu Island

      October 3, 2023 in Taiwan ⋅ 🌬 31 °C

Got up early and went with Hsieh to Lotus Lake... was pretty nice, lots of temples... and terrapins!
Planned to spend the night in Liuqiu Island but apparently there's a typhoon brewing or something so no ferries tomorrow (boooooooo!) So a day trip it was...
Usually being unplanned works quite well for me, had an idea that I wanted to go to Secret Beach and then do a bit of a hike on the other side of the island... I only had 5 hours so thought this was a good plan!
The walk to Secret Beach took over an hour, it was hot, unscenic and quite frankly miserable... I started to think this was going to be the first disappointing day of solo travelling... but then Secret Beach was ace... small, completely empty and saw about 8 or 9 sea turtles... 🥰 (sea was a bit rough so didn't go in! Despite having a cossie and snorkel stuff this time!) Spent about 45 mins trying to capture the turtles on camera (photography really isn't a skill of mine)... they're an absolute tease! If you can spot them in the pic / vid that would make me happy!!
Anyways, couldn't stand to walk much further so popped into a nearby hostel (it was empty!) to ask if they knew the bus routes... they didn't but one lady, Linees (I think), was very quick to offer me a ride on a moped to the other side of the island... who am i to say no?! That was fun 😄 bloody love strangers!
Spent a bit of time on Beauty Beach... lives up to its name... before wondering around to Vase Rock (I think it looks more like Broccoli Brain personally, but judge for yourself!) all the while spotting more turtles offshore popping up for air!

Took a couple of selfies... I think I pull off the sweaty mess look better than clean and tidy! 🤣
