      Down and out

      September 6, 2023 in Tanzania ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

On returning to Barafu (base) camp there was barely time to stop and think what we'd achieved before we needed to carry on down the mountain. Most wanted to give in to the feeling of slumber and close their eyes for a few minutes but the guides would not allow this ( the theory being this might confuse a picture of delayed cerebral oedema) so we only had time to eat something before heading on down the hill. Some discussion regarding whether we push on to mweka camp (3100m, 3-4 hrs) or stoppped at millenium camp ( 3800m, 2 hrs) with the guides: in my mind no one was going beyond millenium: my team were on their knees. I wasn't too concerned about anyone's altitude symptoms so 3800mand millenium it was. Fortunate for 2 reasons: the last bit to mweka was slippery muddy and would have been treacherous on tired legs at dusk-and it allowed me to fit in with Hels and Marks' itinerary and walk down with them.

Despite the euphoria of summiting, there was little chat or excitement at Millenium camp as most succumbed to overwhelming tiredness and hit the sack early.
The next morning was a tough and slippery sting in the tail 3 hours down to mweka gate , but all a blur. Waking on that last day on the mountain, on the edge of the rain forest with the perennial sea of clouds beneath us was with mixed feelings: what an amazing experience to spend time on the mountain with some lovely folk- both my Tanzanian team and the participants, but living at the dusty altitude of Karanga was tough and there's no doubt in my mind that the final summit push was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Over ( many) years I've taken on some tough physical challenges in my time, but hypoxia drains everything and leaves you clinging on to just existing. Kilimanjaro: beware!!!!

      Kilimanjaro Tour: Mweka Gate

      November 20, 2023 in Tanzania ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Kili Tour Tag 7: Abstieg Mweka Gate

      March 18, 2023 in Tanzania ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      Mataruni Waterfall

      March 7, 2020 in Tanzania ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Day 7: Is day 6 at the Kili adventure

      February 8, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

Time to go home! All I want is to take those shoes off, sleep in a proper bed, wash my clothes and enjoy a hot shower.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, we had to walk all the way back. About 4 hours of walking downhill back to Barafu Camp. And after a hot lunch, we also had to walk downhill to High Camp (3,950m) - leaving the high altitude. So yesterday was tough 💪🦸🏼‍♀️!

But today we finished the Kili adventure. 6 more hours of hiking downhill and we arrived at Mweka Gate (1,640m) - the finishing line of Machame Route.

      Day 1: Back in Tanzania

      September 2, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      🇹🇿🇹🇿🇹🇿Tanzania🇹🇿🇹🇿🇹🇿Moshi🇹🇿🇹🇿🇹🇿

I can’t believe that I’m back. Already. After only a few months. I always knew that I would come back some day ... but this is just amazing 🙏

I’m off to Tanzania to learn about coffee, from farming to roasting 🧐 ☕️ 🌿

Today was all about getting to know our hosts, the group, the farm and basics about coffee. And to adjust to the climate. The farm is at 1.350m (at the lower end of mount Kilimandscharo) - so it’s freezing cold, all day. But especially at night.

And I can already tell that I don’t ever want to go back home again (but I will, no worries)... just like the last time I came I fell in love again with the people, nature and life on this continent.💛🇹🇿

      Day 2: Coffee Tasting

      September 3, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today was all about tasting. Tasting the differences of coffee beans as well as preparation types. Well, I’m not really good at it - it’s similar to wine tasting and needs practice - but at least I can tell that differences exist 😉😇

Surprisingly, it is quite cold in Tanzania 🇹🇿 🥶 I’m really freezing in the morning as well as at night ... I can tell that I’m going to catch a cold soon 🤒 But during the day it is perfect weather. And our hosts are amazing - before going to bed they place a hot-water bottle underneath our blankets 🙏

      Day 4: The Coffee Nursery

      September 5, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Another day of working on the farm. Today we visited the nursery where new coffee plants are grown 🌱🌱🌱.

This was a very fun day as we were able to do all the planting ourselves - from planting small coffee beans in the nursery to planting a fully grown tree out in the field.Read more

Day 5: The Coffee Mill & Moshi

      September 6, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Time to leave the farm and visit a coffee mill in Moshi 👌💪. This is the final step for coffee production and we have learned a lot.

After a morning full of learning about the milling process, we were able to visit Moshi and do a little bit of shopping.Read more

Day 6: Time for a Test

      September 7, 2019 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today was THE big day for all of us as we had to take a test on coffee farming in the morning 😱

The goods news is: We have all passed the exam. The funny news is: I scored almost 100% - but right before I handed in my exam I changed one answer because I saw my colleague gave a different answer... and this answer was wrong 😂 my original answer was correct 😂 but anyways, I passed so it’s all good.

In the afternoon I rewarded myself with a walk up to Mweka gate of Kilimandscharo national park ... a trip down memory lane. Very emotional actually. But I was more than happy that I had the opportunity to come back to this special place again 🙏
