      United at Twiga Lodge!

      At around midday Franziska arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport. What a tiny sweet little airport. And what a tiny sweet little girl! We head off through the dry, ashy and brownish steppe. They have not had rain for more than 6 months here. First drops appeared just a few days ago. Back at Twiga Lodge in Usa River we slide into a slumbery nap on the wide open balcony with great view on Mount Meru. Today we are not camping in my car yet but sleep in one of their luxurious guest rooms. What a wonderful place to grove into our next four weeks of adventure. As we stroll around in the nearby village at dusk, Franziska gets her cultural infusion directly this very evening. Being surrounded by curious Tanzanians a friendly random guy introduces us to his mother and later to his other mother. How many mother might he have? There is loud music and without realising it we are dragged into a local communion celebration where we get offered fancy local food by this mother-abundant guy: spicy pilau with creamy makande, rich ndizi nyama and fresh cole slaw!Read more

      Ankunft in Tansania

      Nach knapp 6 Stunden Flug von Doha zum Kilimandscharo Airport in einem A330 von Oman Air sind wir pünktlich gelandet.
      Visa hat problemlos geklappt, Gepäck vollständig mitgekommen und draußen wartete schon der Fahrer auf uns.
      Er brachte uns zu unserer ersten Unterkunft, der African View Lodge in Arusha.
      Ein tolles Zimmer.
      Dann gab's das Briefing für die Safari. Jetzt gab's die erste Enttäuschung. In Tansania ist das Benutzen von Drohnen strengstens verboten.
      Wilderer nutzen oft Drohnen. Mit solchen Leuten möchte ich nicht im Knast zusammen sitzen.
      Freuen uns auf morgen. Da gibt's hoffentlich schon viele Tiere zu sehen.      Read more

      Kaffee bei Mama Sophie

      Nach einem guten Frühstück wurden wir von unserem Guide abgeholt und wir liefen durch eine Siedlung und später durch den Regenwald zu Mama Sophie. Sie baut Kaffee an. Damit die zu Hause Gebliebenen nicht zu traurig sind, während des Spaziergangs regnete es und wir wurden ziemlich nass. Uns wurde gezeigt, wie aufwendig es ist den Kaffee zu ernten, die Schalen zu entfernen, zu rösten und dann für das Kochen des Getränks zu mahlen. Alle Arbeitsgänge wurden mit "local machines" durchgeführt. Wir nahmen an, dass eine Lokale Maschine Geräte sind, die, wie in einer Genossenschaft, von mehreren Bauern genutzt wird. Aber weit gefehlt. eine local machine ist ein über dimensionierter Mörser.... und jeder hat einen eigenen.
      Nachdem er Kaffee natürlich verkostet war, kauften wir auch ein Kilo für unsere Familie. Zu Hause hätten wir dafür fast 2,5 kg bekommen. Aber egal - es ist ja auch für einen guten Zweck.
      Weiter ging es zu einer jungen Familie im Dorf, die uns ein traditionelles Mittagessen servierte. Maisbrei (Ugali), Bohnen, Spinat. Besonders lecker schmeckte es auch deshalb, da wir mit den Fingern gegessen haben. Es sah nicht elegant aus, aber es hat funktioniert. Ein anderes Ehepaar aus dem Ruhrgebiet am Nebentisch rümpfte etwas die Nase und aß fast nichts.... Na gut, muss jeder selbst wissen. Aber wenn ich in diese Gegend fahre, dann sollte man sich auf die Gegebenheiten einfach einlassen.
      Nachdem wir satt waren, war wieder ein Spaziergang durch den Regenwald angesagt. Beeindruckend waren die Colobus (Schwarz-weiße Stummelaffen) und die riesigen Bäume, die dort schon viele hundert Jahre stehen. Beeindruckend vor allem die großen Wurzeln.

      Twiga means giraffe

      On the way to Horohoro border on December 18th I spotted a Land Rover Defender with German number plate from Konstanz coming towards me from the border and I was wondering who that might be! The day before yesterday I asked Thomas in the German overlanding group about this car and he told me "Hey, I will meet these guys in Twiga lodge for Christmas. Come and join us!". Well, this is how Christmas plans are being made nowadays!

      Awesome place, this Twiga lodge. Run by British Paul and Erica. The moment I arrive they are having a party with all their staff and their kids. It seems to be one big family and they are so welcoming that I directly feel like being one of their members! We have awesome dinner and Paul plays Father Christmas, distributing small presents to everybody. The next day we eat and eat and eat again, even a bigger Christmas lunch. In the evenings we gather with all guests on the veranda, tell stories and listen to the night. The lodge is located directly at the border of Arusha national park and one evening an elephant appears at the campsite, cracking some branches in the distance. The campsite itself is newly established with shady spots and great washrooms. It integrates very well into the relaxing and refreshing atmosphere of the whole lodge.

      Thomas from Germany decided to leave his German life behind - temporarily - and to travel in Africa [1]. He started with a plan of 3 months in South Africa. Then he decided to buy a Land Rover Discovery Series I. This turned out to be crap and he bought a Land Rover Discovery Series II. Now he is here, sharing with Michi some beer. This is 15 months after he left Germany 😃
      He will drop his Land Rover here for servicing of its buggy V8 engine while going to climb up Kilimanjaro tomorrow. Paul and Erica run a self-driving safari company [2] and rent old but well-maintained Defenders to their customers. This is why they also own a decent Land Rover workshop.

      So, what about this mysterious dark Defender from Konstanz now? It belongs to Christine and Bernd who travel around eastern Africa for many years already. Their current round trip was for 10 weeks and they return back to Germany in a few days, leaving their impressively equipped overlanding truck here in Arusha. We have a great time together and I stay 3 nights here enjoying their company. Oh, what lovely people!

      Camping 🏕 : Twiga Lodge (Shawn Lodge)

      Um uns auf das Camping einzustimmen haben wir die erste Nacht auf einer sehr schönen Campinganlage nahe dem Arushar Nationalparks verbracht. Dieser wird liebevoll von Paul und Erica geführt.
      Am Abend hat uns Paul etwas herumgeführt, uns verschiedene Vogelarten gezeigt, bevor wir zusammen den Sonnenuntergang 🌅 genossen haben.      Read more
