Street food tour Old Phuket Town

      July 4, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Fabulous food tour today. Our guide Pema took us through Phuket Central Market and Old Phuket Town. Lots of market stalls ranging from fresh fruits ,vegetables , spices and flowers. Lots of tastings at small restaurants ,roadside stalls and even soap ice cream. Its not actually soap but just looks like it. Tried Durion fruit and pig intestine. Interesting!!!!
Didn't realise but there are a large majority of people in Phuket who are Baba (mixed blood). People from China ,Malaysia and Myanmar. These people came because of the tin mines. A lot of excavation happened at the beaches and because of this some beaches are quite dangerous to swim at even though this happened many years ago.

      Phuket, Thailand Mar 21st

      March 21 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We arrived at the island of Phuket this morning and today's excursion is a tour of their shrines and temples. Our guide was very good at explaining all the religious meanings, statues and religious meanings of each of the 3 different temples and shrines we visited today. They were all very different since they were of the 3 main religions of Phuket.
Our first stop was a Buddhist temple that houses a bone fragment belonging to Buddha. The temple is Wat Chalong. To enter the temple we had to remove our shoes.
Our second stop was the Nakkerd Hill and the huge 145 foot tall statue of Buddha made of pure white marble. We walked up the steps to the massive statue and around it were religious shrines where people could worship and make offerings. There were monkeys here, but none that we encountered or had our usual run-in with.
We then drove through Phuket's old town area and visited Tien Keng. This is a Chinese shrine at Sapan Hin Park. This temple was multiple buildings and we were able to take our shoes off again and walk into the largest of them. It was a square building with a lot of gold and marble floors. Inside on the top floor was a shrine. The locals pray and perform their rituals and one of the offerings is a gift of fireworks. There is a large brick structure that they fill with the firecrackers and set off about once an hour. It sounded like thousands of firecrackers exploding inside the brick structure that looked like a kiln.
After our tour we took a local 'Uber' to a restaurant that our guide recommended. Our ride was about $3.50! So much cheaper than at home. The food that I had was a very spicy curry dish and Scott had an orange coffee (coffee with fresh orange juice) after dinner. The orange actually looked like a lime since the skin was green but the taste was orange.
Then back to the ship for our 2 sea days to Sri Lanka...

      Chilling in Toasty Patong 🥵

      February 21 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We woke up early on our last morning on The Phinisi, despite our best efforts to sleep in. It gave us time to mingle and converse with everyone. By 930 we were shuttling over on the dingy to the pier. Though not a very big pier, definitely a busy time due to all the day-trippers heading out to The Similan Islands. We ended up docking with another boat, and passing through their lower deck to disembark 🙃

Most of the guys were put on the shuttle bus destined for the airport, and only four of us on another for Phuket Island. Once we reached the outer limits of Phuket city, we were swapped onto a different van to get us to Patong beach. We think that's where A forgot his sun hat 👒🤔, oh well.

We arrived at the accommodations by 11am, and they were gracious enough to allow an early check-in. It is a simple 2 bedroom apartment; we can cook for the first time in a month! It was nice to have down time in a cooled space, without any rocking ⛵. Eventually we did head out to get a few things, and went as far as the Malin Plaza outdoor market, before heading back. Without the ocean breeze and open air, the temperature really is toasty 🥵. We only found convenience stores instead of grocery ones, so ended up ordering pizza and pasta to be delivered. A little reset for the tummies after many days of yummy boat food.

The following day we spent the morning poolside in the shade. Coffee, fresh fruit and oatmeal ☕. Mid-afternoon we decided to checkout the local mall, mostly just to get out AND stay COOL ☃️ It was a short but hot walk despite trying to stay in the shade. Jungceylong shopping complex is pretty extensive, but very much catering to International tourists, and high prices. But, can't beat bubble tea for $1.15cad!

Big C grocery store was an experience. Well stocked shelves, but confusing to find items due to multiple places for things. Many imported things are higher costs than home. It was good to see better fresh food storage practices, yet the pre-cooked chickens were just sitting on a table at room temperature 🍗. The liquor store closes for a few hours of the afternoon due to government rules. Thankfully it was after 5pm and we could buy a bottle of Thai Rose wine. It was a gamble if it was going to be dry or sweet. We lucked out and it was refreshingly dry 🍷

Travel planning for the next few weeks was enjoyable to do in the peaceful AC'd apartment or poolside in the shade. Then we realized when trying to make an online purchase that the credit card used at the grocery store was missing 💳😱! Looking around the apartment turned up nothing. Phone calling the store included the understandable language barrier. They looked, yet didn't quite say they didn't have it. Walking to the store late afternoon avoided the sizzling UV rays 🔆 The store employee we asked (with Google translate) about the missing card showed us to the customer service counter. The young man behind the desk was holding up the card! 😁 They had found it when I had phoned.

A short walk through the busy shopping areas lead us to the Patong Beach at dusk. The beach was quiet with the last boats of the day trickling in. We chose a restaurant facing the street towards the beach. A noodle dish and veggie Burger 🍔🍴 The food was delicious and endless people watching.

Our last day in Pa Tong beach was more relaxed. A took the laundry down the hill to wash at a self serve laundromat. It was super reasonable at 40 Bhat a load. While the clothes were hanging to dry on our patio, we planned for our next adventure in New Zealand 🇳🇿 Surprisingly, the day was relatively enjoyable with a continuous breeze to distract us from the 33C humid heat.

For dinner we ventured to a nearby Mexican restaurant, off the busier main road. We were looking at the margaritas, but there was a Buddha holiday in effect, preventing the sale of alcohol anywhere in the country 😭 Soda water with lime didn't quite taste the same.

And that's a wrap for our Thailand adventure 👌

      Spa Day

      July 5, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Another relaxing day today. Enjoyed a beautiful 2 hours at the resort spa having an aromatherapy oil massage and facial with my spa partner Yvonne 🤣 . Swim and cocktails by the pool then off to Karon Beach again . More cocktails and dinner at Butterfly Bistro . Night markets at the local temple although Tania commented that there were probably only 1/5 of the stalls there compared to when she came with Emily only a few years ago. So sad !!! Tuk tuk ride to Patong Beach which is a much busier place . Bangla Road walking street was an eye opener I'm glad we are staying somewhere more sedate. Finished off with banana and nutella pancake . 😋Read more

      Phang Nha Bay

      July 6, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

What a day . Wow !!! Picked up mid morning and headed up to Ao Por Pier.Took an hour to get there and dropped off at a dodgy little shop. 😅 Wondered what we got ourselves into . People got some supplies but didn't really need too . Brian and I bought glasses ropes so we didn't lose them in the ocean. Picked up at jetty by traditional Thai bus and dropped at boat . Took about an hour to get to Hong Island for our first kayak. Our kayak guide was Dorn. Lovely man . Amazing to kayak through cave and come through to open beautiful lagoons. Proud of myself because our next kayak at Phanak Island was through a sea cave that was only centimetres from my face . Scary and I did panic a little. We had to lie down the whole time but I kept my eyes closed and I did it !! Just before our lovely seafood dinner Dorn helped us make a beautiful floating Kratong made of flowers for our night kayak. Once we entered the lagoon we rafted up with our friends and we lit the candles and floated them . A time for reflection and connection. On our way back through the cave we stirred up the water with our hands to reveal the bio luminescence. Amazing . Massive day out will sleep well tonight.Read more

Brian and I not feeling great today. Lucky its a down day. We got the shuttle bus down to Centara Grand to have brunch. Then off to their adult pool to relax. Brian slept the whole time .🤣
We got back to our villa and slept all afternoon. Headed down to Karon for another suit fitting and Wally and I had our feet nibbled by fish. Very ticklish. Off to check out Kata Beach . Had dinner and home . Hope we feel better tomorrow.Read more

      Phuket

      December 12, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Phuket - something completely different again. It is quite warm and humid here all the time. The sun is very strong, even if it hides behind the clouds. So it's no wonder that I'm already sunburnt.... 🥵

On the beach we saw many crabs from small to large, a snake and some lizards on the way to the beach as well as 2 very trusting and cheeky birds near our bungalow.

Towards evening, a small thunderstorm came up, it rained full throttle for about 10 minutes - but it still stayed warm 😊

      Phuket kurzer Tauchstopp

      November 29, 2019 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Scuba day

      April 12, 2018 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Whilst Al soaks up the rays by the pool it is time for another day of diving including Emma’s first open water dives.

Thailand is a beautiful dive destination and today’s dives are way out to sea but in a protected bay on a small pair of islands so ideal for a new diver. T, our divemaster, briefs us and we ‘giant stride’ into the ocean and descend gently to the bottom. 12m is the max depth for a novice but there is still plenty to see including several octopi, a large moray eel and some smaller morays, lots of giant puffer fish and more. It’s a long day with 3 dives and a lengthy boat trip out to sea. Leave at 8 and back just before 7pm.

The photos don't really do it justice (and they need the colours fixing to adjust for the loss of colour underwater).
