      Drive Home

      The drive home was just over an hour. At the Elephant camp the weather great however halfway home and it bucketed down, the traffic was slow, and the roads flooded. Once back at the Hotel the rain stopped, we have been so lucky with the weather as it has not effected our activities. Fingers crossed it remains that way.Read more

      Cooking class

      A few days ago my Mom and I went to a Thai cooking school (Lana Smiles Cooking), to learn how to make some traditional Thai dishes 🥘. This is how the day went: first, we walked down to the Tha Pae gate, where we met one of the people who would be taking the class with us, named Mino. Then, we got picked up by Pim and Nim, the instructors, in their songthaew-like pickup truck 🚘. The other people doing the class with us were: Mino (Italian) 🇮🇹, Colleen and Rachel (American) 🇺🇸, Caleica 🇧🇷 and Eddie 🇳🇱 (Brazilian and Dutch), and of course, Pim and Nim (Thai) 🇹🇭. The first thing we did was drive to a market which was pretty far away, and Pim told us about some of the ingredients we would be using for the meals 🌶🌶🌶. Then, we had about 15 minutes to walk around the market separately and buy/try stuff. Mom and I found some delicious oranges 🍊, dried mangos 🥭, and some yummy fried dough that tasted a lot like Canadian Timbits 🍩!! After that, we drove to the cooking school, where we learned how to make different kinds of Thai noodle dishes, curries, spring rolls, desserts, and soups 🍜 🍛 🍨 🍲 🍚 . After we made each course, we got to eat it while it was still hot! I didn’t eat too much, but everyone else there was stuffed by the end of the day (I brought most of my food home for my dad to eat, because he loves Thai food!) It was a very fun and delicious way to spend time with my Mom!

      Mekong Indochina Hash 2019

      Today starts 5 straight days of hashing in and around Chiang Mai, for the annual Mekong Indochina Hash. We are staying in the Duangtawan Hotel, which is a comfortable place, and centrally located.

      Lanna Bush H3 - FP ran with the CM Bunny / Iron P***y Hash (mostly only women), and I ran with the Lanna Bush (Men Only) trail. It was quite an excursion to get out to the run site, as we stopped every 10 minutes for the drivers and the hares to coordinate. Once we finally got on trail, it was an excellent jungle trail, with plenty of climbing. I had to tap out at the beer check, as my chest was hurting. https://www.relive.cc/view/vmqX1NYBdov

      Thinking Drinking H3 - On Friday, we went out of town again for the long awaited 75th running of the TDH3. Hares were Ibo Ibo and Diarrhea, who promised a fun, but elevating trail. It was elevating for sure, lots of climbing. https://www.relive.cc/view/vXOnEZJn3Bv

      Mekong Indochina Hash Trail day 1 - After a sore shoulder on Friday, I was thinking I would have to sit out for the Saturday trail, but I rallied and went out for the short walkers trail. Now this is new territory for me, I have never done a strictly walkers trail before. So off we went for what I thought would be about a 30 minute ride to the run site . . . well,, two hours later we finally got all 20 plus songthaews to the same spot and off we went into the jungle. It was an excellent trail with several checks, ending at a reservoir where the beer was cold and sun was warming. A great day, but by the time I got back to the hotel, my throat was starting to hurt again, so had to make a short night of it, but did get to see the Lady Boy shows at the venue.       Mekong Indochina Hash Trail day 2 - After a pretty rough week, and a few aches and pains, I decided to take today off for some rest. FP ran the hangover trail today, and she is running very well. Even up the front on many trails. Here is a quick recap of my journey so far after 35 days . . . Countries = 3, Hash Trails = 27, Hikes = 4, total distance = 247 Kms. Probably can add another 30-40+ Kms for just general walking around, but lots of exercise to say the least. Upcoming journeys include Taiwan, Korea, and Indonesia to wrap up 2019.

      MIH Full Moon Run - The postlube event of the Mekong Indochina Hash, one that I had been looking forward to . . . I ended up giving it a miss. Still pretty sick (body aches, cold shivers, fever, coughing, runny nose, you get the picture), I stayed in bed all day, trying to recover. Tuesday was a scheduled down day, for anything we wanted to do in Chiang Mai, but it also turned into a recovery day. Wednesday morning, we packed up our stuff, and all the new hash give-aways, and off to the airport . . . next stop: ASIA UNITED in Taiwan.      Read more

      Heute war nochmals ein Tag meinem Hobbie gewidmet, bevors dann wieder weitergeht.
      Beim Spaziergang zum Hostel hab ich einige witzige Dinge gesehen (ja, das sind Motoräder auf dem Dach vom Taxi).
      Mein Snack für den Heimweg erweiste sich aber dem ersten Biss als grosse Fehler, aber meine Toleranz für scharfes Essen bessert sich langsam 😃Read more

      Sunday Night Market

      Chiang Mai has a really interesting night market on Sunday evenings which has expanded immensely since we were here two years ago. In 2014, the market was centered on Rachadamnoen Alley in the old city, with some small offshoots on a few cross streets. This year the offshoots are full fledged branches and even the streets running perpendicular to the main market are filled with vendors. Despite the expansion, as was the case two years ago, there are so many people walking around, one can barely move.

      All the hustle and bustle comes to a complete standstill at 6:00 PM each week when the PA system announces it is time to stand for the playing of the Thai national anthem. For the entire duration of the song, the only thing moving in the crowds are the lips of those singing along. And this year, because of the king's passing in October, we were treated to another pause in the mayhem. At just after 7:00, the PA blasted out another message, but this time only in Thai. The vendors began dimming the lights in their stalls and handing out candles to each other. Then, when all the staff was holding lit candles, they began handing them out to the customers, including me! A lengthy speech was broadcast over the PA system followed by a full minute of silence for their beloved king. Very touching.

      Once the candles were extinguished, it was back to business as usual. The food hawkers, the artisans and the musicians all picked up exactly where they left off and the throng once again perused all the offerings available.

      We stopped at our favorite spot for Pad Thai at one of the temples along the main drag. We were shocked to learn that the price had gone up from 25 baht two years ago to 35 baht this year! OK, 10 baht is only $0.35, but it's the principal of the matter. That's a 40% increase in 24 months. Shameful.

      Right near the end of our shopping time, Brenda stopped dead in her tracks and said, "Look at those papayas!" Now you have to realize that there are not a lot of people selling fruit at this market, unless it's sliced, diced and ready to eat. But lo and behold, a few feet ahead of me, there were a half dozen of the largest papayas I've ever seen in my life. We decided we had to have one....... no two!......to bring home with us, especially when we saw one was 25 baht ($0.89) and the other, 30 baht ($1.07). We'll probably have one for breakfast tomorrow morning and that's when we'll find out if they're any good.
