Penultimate landing on the Antarctica Peninsula. Yankee Harbour is entered from Shopski Cove between Glacier Bluff and Spit Point, indenting the south-west side of Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It is 2.35 km long, and 1.6 km wide. Great opportunity to stretch our legs and walk around. Some seriously cute wildlife.Read more

Started the day meeting on deck 6 to let off a weather balloon and take part in a quiz about Antarctica.
We should have been heading to Portal Point but the weather has caught up with us. Wind, cloud and snow affected the plans and we had to head for sheltered waters. We ended up at Enterprise Bay and were able to leave the ship for an hour but it was a bit hair raising!Read more

Chiriguano Bay

Chiriguano Bay is located on the south side of Brabant Island in Antarctica's Palmer Archipelago, bordering the Gerlache Strait. It was named after the tugboat Chiriguano by the Argentine Antarctic Expedition in 1949. Polaris has 2 yellow Submarines named "Ringo" and "George" that are used for deepwater passenger excursions in polar regions. "John" & " Paul" are on a Viking sister ship. We were lucky enough to all get ..... a ticket to ride!Read more

Brown Station (or more often Base Brown or Estación Brown) is an Argentine Antarctic base and scientific research station named after Admiral William Brown, the father of the Argentine Navy. It is located on Sanavirón Peninsula along Paradise Harbor, Danco Coast, in Graham Land, Antarctic Peninsula. We could not look inside the buildings but we could climb up a very steep hill for some spectacular views. Very cold on the Special Ops boats as went so fast!Read more

Damoy Point is a headland 900 metres west-northwest of Flag Point, the northern entrance point to the harbour of Port Lockroy, on the western side of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago of Antarctica. It was discovered and named by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05.

Port Lockroy

Up early to jump on a Zodiac at 8.30pm. Dressed again with 4 layers top and 3 layers bottom, gloves and snood. Learnt quickly just how cold it is especially when at speed. Today we saw Port Lockroy and the post office from the water on Goudier Island. The British Arctic Survey team kindly came on board Polaris to stamp our passports. We also bought and were able to post postcards! Had breakfast on our return and managed to put a few pieces of the penguin puzzle together! Surreal..... absolutely breathtaking. After the 9am briefing we headed out to the deck to watch the icebergs that led to Fournier Bay. Once arrived We headed out on open Zodiacs and saw our first 3 Penguins and a glimpse of an orca. Back on board we went back to Aula to learn more about ice! Then it was off kayaking..... with the humpback whales!Read more

Viking Polaris

The Viking Polaris is an expedition cruise ship that will hopefully get us smoothly across the infamous Drakes Passage to Antarctica. It is a Polar Class 6 certified vessel designed for harsh conditions, featuring an X-bow for a smoother ride, an ice-strengthened hull, and a ballast tank for stability. Our cabin was a lot posher than i had expected. This was to be our first cruise and my stomach is not great on day boats! Not sure i would make it to any of the restaurants, Nordic Spa, or expedition lectures. I came prepared with plenty of ginger tablets for sea sickness!
No single country owns Antarctica; it is governed by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, which dedicates the continent to peaceful, scientific purposes. While several countries have made territorial claims, the treaty does not recognize these claims and prohibits new ones.Read more
