      Playful Day at Sea

      February 19, Coral Sea ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Saw playful Dolphins today while we were at Sea.

Susan learned about Aboriginal Art as she was trying "her hand" at dot painting.

What better way to cap off the night than with a Gin Mixology Class!! Happy to report that they did a great job in decorating the class, and that we got an A. 👍Read more

      Feb 19: At sea

      February 19, Coral Sea ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Today was a nice, relaxing day with deep tissue massages, aboriginal dot art, and dinner with an old school mate! Sharlene & I attended Northern High School in Baltimore. We were 4 years apart & and didn't know one another, but it was fun to reminisce together! That we are on a world cruise together, proves that our world is very small indeed!

Tomorrow, we say hello to Brisbane ❤️

      Feb 20. Brisbane, Queensland Australia

      February 19, Coral Sea ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Jul & I totally fell in love with Brisbane. The capital of Queensland, Brisbane is situated on its namesake river and spreads over picturesque hills rising from Morton Bay. One of the oldest cities in Australia, its first European settlers were the secondary offenders from the Sydney penal colony. It served as one as Douglas MacArthur's Pacific headquarters during World War II. Along with the riverside skyscrapers, (many are beautiful works of art), the city also has quaint historic homes called "Queenslanders". They reminded us of the homes along the east coast in the US. Raised on stilts and having large covered front porches and often only one floor, the front doors open to a long hall, meeting to the back door to better enable the breeze to come through.

We toured the city and went up to Mt. Coot-Tha, which gave us a beautiful view of the city and surrounding areas. Brisbane is a youthful city, offering wonderful pedestrian and biking paths. Some bridges were built strickly for bikes and pedestrians! We were very impressed with its progressive, alternative vehicle infrastructure!

We had lunch at Jumbo Thai, which was fabulous!! We shared a meal of Shrimp & Ginger Dumplings and Tofu & Vegetable Pad See Ew. So delish!

Before heading back to the ship, we walked through the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. This beautiful oasis is in the heart of the city. We saw many folks having their lunch breaks here. I bet they go back to work much calmer!

We had a few minutes to spare and happened upon a Krispy Kreme Donuts! Founded in Winston Salem, NC, we couldn't resist paying homage to Julie's childhood😋

      Feb 21. Coral Sea, Australia

      February 19, Coral Sea ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

A sea day, Julie & I ate breakfast in our room, read the news and basically decided to be lazy. Catherine visited us to plan Tom's birthday celebration next week. It's a secret, so mums the word.

We attended another art session celebrating aboriginal dot art. Julie's doing quite good on her kangaroo art. I'm not so sure that dot art is my calling. But it's always fun. Women tend to be the most critical of their art work and there is often a lot of laughing, which tends to disrupt the whole zen thing that our instructor is trying to bring to her unruly students 🤣

After tonight's lecture (I've stopped listing them on Penquin as there are so many but suffice it to say that all are exceptional), we met Jane & Andy for dinner at Manfredi's. I just love these two beautiful people. Their life as Britains has been very interesting & quite exciting! Jane once had to be a stand in for Qween Elizabeth! She demonstrated the royal wave! It's always great fun being in their company and hearing Andy's stories when he served in the Queens military.

Tonight, I'm doing the laundry while most of the passengers are in bed. I can use two machines at a time and be finished luckily split!!

I made a birthday card for Tom, who celebrates his birthday next Monday. Tom is a muscian and has written many songs for famous people. He has the sweetest, most gentle soul. ❤️

Tomorrow, we dock in the beautiful Whitsunday Island. Feeling loved and blessed❤️❤️

Day 63: Snorkeling Great Barrier Reef

      February 23, Coral Sea ⋅ 🌧 82 °F

AMAZING! Once in a lifetime experience. Never did we imagine we would snorkel in The Great Barrier Reef. The photos are taken with a Akaso 4K (GoPro knock-off). My first time using it. I didn’t even practice with it at home. Tip: Practice with the new equipment you purchase BEFORE you leave on your trip. It will show what you need and reduce your stress. I am happy with these pictures. I can see for real underwater photography you need the right gear, especially light. Included are pictures of people, the reef from our snorkeling, and coral from the glass bottom boat ride. Also the 2 videos are worth the watch.

When we woke up in the morning it was rainy … I mean RAINING! Donna and I said “We are going to get wet anyway - we are going!” We got on to a “ferry-like” craft and headed out to the platform. Which was more like a futuristic science fiction mini-city in the middle of the ocean. It was a full-service experience, for people at all levels. If you can’t swim you could enjoy the underwater walkway, or the semi-submergible, or the glass bottom boat. For certified scuba (or first timers) you could strap on an air tank and experience the reef. Donna and I first did the snorkeling off of the platform. This is a good way to get use to it, you see a lot. The weather broke, it was blue skies, perfect. After our first go at snorkeling - lunch was served. It was amazing excellent flavor great selection. It was at the quality level we are all getting very use to onboard the Neptune.

Then we did the extra “Snorkel Adventure” where they took about 20 of us out in a smaller boat to a different part of the reef in deeper water. There were more fish there and larger fish. The coral was gorgeous. Donna got a bit disorientated and went back tot the smaller boat. She got a bit sea sick - however, she “didn’t feed the fish.”

Because the schedule was pretty tight we missed the scheduled glass bottom boat tours. However, Captain Amanda - was able to work it out that once we got back from the “Snorkel Adventure” we went directly onto the Glass Bottom boat and have that experience — she was able to figure out the schedule to still get us back to the pier on time. Excellent customer service. The crew and staff on the ship and platform all provided the positive attitude, smiles, care, concern, and customer service we all experience everyday on the Neptune. We would do this again in a heartbeat.

On the ride back to the pier - everyone was exhausted - the ship was quiet - many of us tried to get in a few winks of a nap. Once docked, Donna and I walked from the ferry pier towards our Neptune home. We had some extra time, since we didn’t have to be back on board until 8:00 PM. Right off the port bow of the Neptune was Hemingway’s Brewery where we had Fish & Chips and a beer flight to sample 5 of their brews. We sat there finishing up our chips, Donna said, “We just snorkeled in The Great Barrier Reef.”

Everyday this journey feels like I am reading an adventure novel - instead we are living it.

      Day 2 Whales

      August 24, 2019, Coral Sea ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Much calmer and warmer today but not as many whales. Did see lots of breaching and tail slapping and dolphins. Just before we were about to head back in had amazing close encounters including a couple of our group getting in with 2 whales just happy to lie there belly up and reach out for a touch. Water so clear could really feel like they were looking at us.Read more

Fraser - sand, salt and ground water

      December 27, 2019, Coral Sea ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Spannend.
