      Part 2…

      Then it was time for the traditional “Dale and India try something weird” moment so we headed to the next store for some sheep’s intestines - kokoreç - and rice stuffed mussels - midye dolma.
      Ariah was “already full” so she didn’t try these but Ind got into the mussels having a couple of free ones and Dale and her demolished the kokoreç. The trick it seems is not think as you eat……🫣

      Ariah’s stomach miraculously had more room though as we got to the gozleme shop. By then though Ind and Dale were already starting to struggle to fit more but luckily, along with pide, this was one of the top reasons Kylie had Türkiye on the itinerary in the first place. The Büyükanne making the gozleme didn’t disappoint either - it was very yum. However, when it came out we were surprised there was no lemon slices with it! Instead there was big chunk of butter that were were told to rub all over the steaming hot, fresh slices - cause gozleme is not all ready oily enough it seems 🤣
      Our guides were a bit taken back when Kylie suggested that some slices of lemon would be in order so it was a good thing that the butter tasted pretty good.

      Then, as a special vege addition we went to get some çig köfte - vegan kofta made from semolina.
      Ahmet told us that kofte came from a time long ago when the ancient King Nemrut banned fires in his kingdom after failing to burn the Prophet Ibrahim so the people would make these meatballs with spices and bulgur and kneeled for hours until ready.

      Barely able to walk we were so full, we crossed back over to the other side of the Bosphorus and went to a cafe to try knafeh and Turkish coffee.

      It was a great tour - we spent about 4 hours with Ahmet and Eren and learnt a lot about the city - but didn’t even have dinner that night when we got home. So. Much. Food!!!      Read more

      Europe to Asia to Europe

      Having recently spent a few days in İstanbul with his friends, Mui had our evening in İstanbul all planned out.

      We were to take a cruise across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar; take another cruise to Aşiyan for sightseeing; make our way to Kadıköy for dinner; return to Karaköy … traveling thus from Europe to Asia and back to Europe in the span of a couple of hours … using public transportation to get us there and back.

      We started out by taking the metro from the station near Galataport to the ferry terminal. A lovely sunset cruise to the Asian side of the Bosphorus. So far, so good. A few minutes later, however, we were jiggling our plans. No cruises to Aşiyan this evening. So, we hopped on a bus to go straight to Kadıköy instead.

      Hamsi Pub, the place Mui had in mind for dinner, is located in the historic shopping district. There are still lots of shops where one can spend money galore, but restaurants and cafes line the streets as well … the tables filled with patrons enjoying a night out on the town … music blaring from loudspeakers.

      I wasn’t sure we’d be able to get a table on a Saturday night without reservations. But our timing worked in our favor as 7:00p is still fairly early by Turkish dining standards. From the tray of mezes (Turkish tapas) we selected a couple of dishes … supplementing them with a shrimp casserole and fried calamari. We wrapped up our delicious meal with a very tasty semolina halva stuffed with vanilla ice cream. Can you say yummy?

      The return ferry ride to Karaköy gave us a scenic nighttime cruise that we enjoyed from the back deck of the ferry. The ferry landing wasn’t too far from Galataport, so we got some steps in on the way back to the ship.

      It was 9:30p by the time we were back in the cabin. It was very tempting to just go to bed and leave the unpacking until tomorrow. With a short day in port, however, we decided to forego a bit of sleep tonight instead of losing sightseeing time in İstanbul tomorrow.

      Oh! I almost forgot. On the way back to Oosterdam, we detoured into Mui’s favorite shop in İstanbul — Hafız Mustafa. Conveniently, there is a branch at Galataport. A box of baklava, thus made it onto the ship with us 😉      Read more

      Wir erkundeten erstmal alleine die nähere Umgebung, da JL eine Klausur hatte. Abends aßen wir mit JL im Salve - völlig untypisch für Weihnachten - Vegane Burger. Danach gingen wir ins Hotel, wo wir die spärlichste Bescherung ever hatten(fast alles Gutscheine). Dann machten wir es uns gemütlich und quatschten bis tief in die Nacht hinein.Read more

      Foodies in two continents

      We joined a couple of cool locals today for a food tour across across two continents.
      First thing we did was jump on a ferry and cross over to Anatolia - the Asian side of the city which gave us a great view of the ruins of the Byzantine sea walls and the sites in Old Town. (Pretty cool if you’ve spent the last few years listening to a podcast on the history of the Roman/Byzantine Empire 😜🤓).

      Like every food tour we came hungry and our first stop didn’t disappoint when we sat down to sample a genuine Turkish doner kebab!
      A bit different from what we have in Aus though as it was just meat and a few pickles and hot chips.
      No “garlic, chilli, humous, tabouli”….it hides the flavour of the meat we were told; only dodgy operators with low quality meat do that to hide/add flavour. 😳🤔
      A that wasn’t the only weird difference at our first stop. It seems that “American style burgers” are very popular in with the new generations in Türkiye - but when the sauce is on the OUTSIDE of the burger, we weren’t so sure. Still it was pretty tasty but it was time to move on.

      As we walked we chatted with Ahmet and Eren about the history of the city, the locals now, politics, good bars, football (a.k.a. soccer), how through a flare at a ref leads to a 2 year ban from stadiums (Eren 🤦‍♂️), and how they spent their days.
      They had made some changes to the normal tour so that Kylie actually got something to eat - they were polite enough to keep checking if Kylie might just like to try liver or fish just in case though 😜
      But they scored points when we stop for a Turkish rice and chickpea dish called pilaf which was a buttery/nutty fat rice. Kylie took mental notes so we could pass on the recipe to our University daughter 😆
      Dale was stoked with this place though as he got to sample the local ayran. A salty goats yogurt/milk drink that he tried years ago with a mentor at work who was Turkish. Turns out only Dale was a fan in the end though 🤣

      Istanbul - Impressionen Tag 3

      Am dritten Tag haben wir uns auf nach Asien gemacht 😁. Mit der Fähre ist man in ca. 15 min da. Wir haben uns für die Anlegestelle Kadiköy entschieden und sind inmitten eines bunten Treibens aus Geschäften, Cafés und Bars gelandet. Der asiatische Teil Istanbuls ist noch quirliger, facettenreicher und weniger überlaufen. Das nächste Mal würden wir sicher hier unsere Basis aufschlagen 🤔. Hat man die Nase voll von zu vielen Menschen, kann man hier einfach ans Ufer gehen und die vorbeiziehenden Schiffe beobachten.

      Am Abend gab es dann noch eine typisch touristische Dinner Bootsfahrt inkl. Unterhaltungsprogramm 🤣.      Read more

      Mit der Maramay fuhren wir auf die asiatische Seite Istanbuls Zimmer türkischen Frühstück. Dann besuchten wir den Stadtteil Kadiköy bevor es mit der Fähre zurück ging. Wir besuchtennden Gewürzmarkt. Abends waren wir auf dem großen Bazar und nach einem erneuten Kebab entspannten wir im Hamam.Read more

      Kadiköy

      Das Ziel unserer Fährfahrt ist Kadiköy, ein kleiner Künstlerort mit einem tollen Kunstmarkt, sowie einem Markt für Lebensmittel, das sagt zumindest unsere Reiseführer. 😂 leider ist Sonntags beides nicht vorhanden, aber dafür gibt es unzählige kleine schnuckelige Cafés bei deren Gestaltung man den künstlerischen Charm erahnen kann. Wir schauen uns ein wenig um und machen eine Pause im Eiskaffee, bevor wir uns auf die Rückfahrt machen. Eigentlich hatten wir vor anschließend noch weiter nach Üsküdür zu fahren, entscheiden uns dann aber spontan dafür zurück ins Hotel zu fahren und uns vor dem Abendessen noch etwas auszuruhen und frisch zu machen.Read more

      Auf der asiatischen Seite

      Nachdem wir in den letzten Tagen die europäische Seite Istanbuls entdeckt haben ging es heute rüber nach Asien. Hin mit dem sogenannten Marmaray Zug, welcher unter dem Bosporus hindurch führt. Wir flanierten am Wasser entlang, genossen die Aussicht auf die Hagia Sofia, die Bosporusbrücke und die blaue Moschee und verbrachten einige Zeit mit dem Fotografieren des Leander Turms. Wie die letzten Tage auch war es ziemlich kalt, aber es regnete nicht! Anschließend besichtigten wir den Stadtteil Kadiköy indem wir eine Rundfahrt mit einer kleinen historischen Straßenbahn machten. Nachdem wir ausreichend geschlemmt hatten fuhren wir mit der Fähre zurück nach Europa. Auf dem Weg zum Hostel stoppten wir noch einmal auf dem ägyptischen Basar auf dem wir dann um Gewürze feilschten und unsere letzten Lira loswurden. Bei einem abendlichen Spaziergang durch Sultanahmet nahmen wir Abschied von den wundervoll beleuchteten Moscheen und der wirklich beeindruckenden Stadt.Read more

      Bucharest ist nett. Aber eine ganze Woche? Wir also nach Istanbul zum Abendessen geflogen.

      Çiya Sofrası wurde für uns durch eine Episode bei der Netflix-Serie bekannt. Musa Dağdeviren hat hier eine Kulinarische Reise durch die Türkei geschaffen.
      Auch wenn das Restaurant wir 20 benachbarte aussieht, war es die Stunde Taxifahrt auf die asiatische Seite von Istanbul wert.

His no-frills restaurant, opened in 1998, is located in Kadiköy Market – Istanbul’s answer to London’s Borough Market – on the city’s Asian side.       Heute fährt die 14 bis nach Istanbul

      Es ist mal wieder soweit - der crazy Trip durch Deutschland war gestern, ein noch craziger Trip vom Bosporus zur Akropolis ist heute.
      Aus der kürzlich bezogenen Bleibe in Frankfurt ist der Flughafen nur ein Katzenwurf entfernt. Ehe wir uns versehen sitzen wir auch schon im Flieger, der kurz nach dem Start schon wieder zur Landung in Istanbul ansetzt. Leider wurde dann das rasante Vorankommen unserer Anreise abrupt gestoppt. Zunächst warten wir fast eine geschlagene Stunde auf den Bus Nr. 14, der uns nach Kadiköy, unserem neuen Heimatstadtteil in Istanbul, bringen soll und dann fahren wir auch noch wegen verstopfter Straßen über 2 Stunden bis da hin. An unserer Zielhebestelle angekommen, müssen wir gleich das nächste Hindernis überwinden: eine riesige Straße, deren Fußgängerampel einfach nicht grün werden will. Als die überwunden ist, läuft aber alles reibungslos. Kurze Zeit später erreichen wir schon unser Hotel, von dem aus wir fünf Minuten später direkt in unsere erste Reunion starten: Dulina, Dulinski, Dulski alias Doodle sammelt uns direkt zum Essen ein. ♡ Verzichten müssen wir leider noch auf Linda, Linsel, Lindt-Schokolade, die sich im Erasmustrubel leider eine ordentliche Erkältung eingefangen hat.
      So starten wir unsere Istanbulerfahrung gemeinsam mit Duschlinski und ihrer Erfurt-Erasmus-Freundin Andreya (Name aus Datenschutzgründen geändert) beim authentischen Abendschmaus. Archimedes seine Getränkeauswahl ist so reudig, dass er seinen nach Essig schmeckenden Rübendirektsaft nicht aufzubrauchen vermag. Weiter geht es in das hippe Kneipelviertel in Kadiköy. Hier herrscht karnevaleske Ausgelassenheit, vergleichbar mit der Schinkenstraße auf Mallorca, der Düsseldorfer Altstadt oder dem Erfurter Petersberg. In einer urigen Kneipe finden wir erstaunlicherweise noch Platz für 6 Personen. 6 Personen? Haargenau: Bariş und Saad (wir wissen ehrlich gesagt nicht mehr wie der zweite Herr hieß) sind noch zu uns gestoßen und erfreuten sich wie Arndt am frisch gezapften Efes. Jule hat stattdessen eine nach Weihnachten schmeckenden Sangria ausprobiert. Der Tag klingt aus bei klassischen Gesprächen zu den Unterschieden von Deutschland und Türkei, der deutschen und der türkischen Sprache und weiteren Themen in gebrochenem Englisch.      Read more
