Village fantôme & plage de rêve

      January 26 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

      July 26, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

      June 20, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      February 27, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Read more

      Ölüdeniz to Kabak Beach, Turkey

      November 16, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Ölüdeniz is possibly the most picturesque location along the whole turquoise coast. Widely advertised for its long stretch of white sand and the deep blue lagoon directly behind. It's surrounded by high mountains that have a constant stream of paragliders launching from the peaks and landing on the beach.

Being a 30-minute drive from Fethiye, we were surprised to find it very much closed for the season. The last remaining beach bar setups were in the middle of their end-of-season pack-down. Even in this state we could tell that in the high season this place would be crazy.

Jessie had heard about a place called Butterfly Valley. Despite being reported as “boat-access” only Jessie had read that there was a way to hike down into it. (Not without its warnings that it was pretty difficult). We drove further along the coast to where the road came the closest to it and found a small place along the cliff edge that had a view down into the valley. The hike down would definitely be a challenge! There were massive signs erected saying it was “dangerous, and forbidden” to climb down to the valley. Perhaps fortunately for us, at this time of year, the sun didn’t quite make it into the valley and beach below so we were less inclined to try our luck at the climb down.

We found a spot along the road for a simple Gozleme lunch and continued on our way along the coast in search of a beach to hang out. The end of the road brought us down to Kabak Beach. In what appeared to be a hippie commune Kabak Beach was at the base of a gully with a dozen or so camps and lodge setups. The beach itself was simple enough and was the perfect spot to have a swim and soak up some sun. The water was incredibly bright blue living up to the name of the turquoise coast.

      Ghost town and gozleme

      August 13, 2023 in Turkey

Today we took a trip out to Karakoy which was a little village on a hillside that has been left abandoned since the population swap between Greece and Türkiye in 1923.
New houses and shops have sprung up around the town but no Turks ever moved in (some say because it’s haunted) 👻
After we had a look around the town, we went to one of the restaurants and watch fresh gozleme being made. Ariah even jumped in and help make hers!!
By the time we finished it was very hot so we went off to Ölüdeniz beach to cool off for the afternoon and watch the never ending stream of parasailers jumping from the cliffs next to the beach.
First chance the teenagers (plus a 10 year old 😜) had they took off out to the marker rope in the water to get away from the stinky adults and start making new friends.

      Kayaköy

      August 22, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Read more

      Exhausting beach day

      November 7, 2020 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Time to explore the area around Fethiye. After breakfast at the seafront, we cycled to Ölüdeniz. İt's a bay with a beautifully blue lagoon, an absolutely stunning location surrounded by high mountains. In order to get there, we had to climb across one of them. And the mountains here are very steep, so we were very happy we didn't have to carry our luggage today. At the beach, we went for a well deserved, nice and refreshing swim in the clear blue water.
Afterwards, we had to climb up the mountain again. From this side, it was even steeper. Within only 2km, we gained over 300m in elevation, some sections were about 20%.
On the way back to Fethiye, we took a detour via Karaköy. There's an old abandoned Greek city you can visit. As we have already seen similar sites here in Turkey, we only stopped for a couple of photos and continued our scenic ride.
One more steep climb and we could roll into Fethiye. Just before the city center, we stopped again. This time, we visited the rock tombs. There was also an old Lycian sarcophagus in the middle of the road. Rather than burying their deads in a Necropolis outside of the city, people in Lycia used to get buried in between the houses. So up til now, you can still sea those sarcophagi in some of the roads in Fethiye.
We spent the evening at the seafront watching people and strolling along the restaurants. Some of them offered live music and were lit in colourful lights, so it was nice walking around.

      Hangover cycling

      November 6, 2020 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After the wine party last night, we had a late start. We slept in a little, had breakfast and coffee - and still felt tired when we started to paddle. Luckily, the wind was on our side for most of the time today and we descended back to sea level. The views were stunning, so we were distracted and didn't think too much about our tiredness.
We arrived in Fethiye and decided to check into a hotel. The town is nice and there's some things to explore, so we may stay here for a couple of nights.

      Season closing

      November 8, 2020 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

You can tell that the season is over here in Fethiye. Some bars, shops and restaurants are already closed, some start getting everything ready for the winter. The vast majority of the boats don't go out anymore either. However, we were lucky enough to find the last one operating. And today, it went out for the last time this season.
Again, we enjoyed being on a boat and seeing the seaside of Turkey. We passed many islands (probably 12 as that was the name of the tour), stopped at 4 of them for a swim and had some yummy fish for lunch. It's getting colder, the water as well, so we were the only ones (I think) who went swimming at all 4 stops. Many people didn't swim at all.
For us, it was probably the last boattrip on our biketour and a relaxing day for our legs as well.
