    Bethany's Holiday Reflections

July 24, 2015 in the United Kingdom

Prague was the first stop on our holiday and we had a very enjoyable stay there. Our hotel was good; the room was nice and the bathroom was very spacious but unfortunately the WiFi proved to be rather problematic. Charles Bridge was very impressive but swarming with people, however we got to see the Old Town area of the city once we got across the bridge and it was full of fascinating architecture and beautiful buildings, including the Astronomical Clock. Prague Castle was huge but also interesting, St. Vitus' Cathedral was an amazing feat of construction and we were lucky enough to see the changing of the guard at the castle gates. We also spent a day looking around Prague Zoo, which was good fun. Sadly a lot of the animals were rather wisely hiding inside or lying in the shade as it was an incredibly hot day.

Venice is a truly unique city and I'm very glad to have been to it. However I'm not sure that I'd ever want to go back. It was excruciatingly hot for basically the whole time we were there and that limited how much we could do during the day. Also as the city is built almost entirely on water the sewage system leaves something to be desired and this meant that parts of the city were rather smelly. However we did get to look round the Doge's Palace, which was very grand, and attend a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which was played excellently by the chamber orchestra. We had time to visit the islands of Murano and Burano as well, thanks to the waterbuses, or zaporettos, which are essentially the city's public transport. We visited the Glass Museum on Murano, which I enjoyed far more than I expected, and I bought a necklace made from real Murano glass. On Burano we went for a brief stroll amongst the beautiful many-coloured houses before returning to the main island.

Geneva is a very efficient and clean city. The hotel we stayed in was the first for the WiFi to actually work properly so that was a bonus. We were only there for one day but we managed to see the very tall and refreshing Jet d'Eau, as well as dropping into the English Gardens and seeing the famous flower clock. Finally, we went on a guided tour through the Patek Philippe Watch Museum, which really made me realise how complex and varied watches can be.

Barcelona was our final stop and was the place I was looking forward to visiting the most as it was the only one I had been to before. Our hotel was very nice and luxurious, and even had a rooftop bar! We saw two buildings designed by Gaudi, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, which were both rather weird but quite interesting. We looked round the outside of La Sagrada Familia but didn't go inside as the queue was insanely long. I didn't mind though as I'd been inside it before. We took a cablecar up to Montjuïc Castle, which contained some fascinating pieces of Spanish history, before walking down through Montjuïc Park to Barcelona Aquarium, which contained lots of colourful and interesting fish. On the last day we went to Ciutadella Park, which had a beautiful lake and some impressive cascades, before continuing on to the Gothic Quarter through the Arc de Triomf. We went inside La Palau de la Música and learnt a lot about the building and the Art Nouveau movement in general.

Overall I really enjoyed the holiday and I'm very glad we went, although it could have done with being a bit less hot! It was nice travelling between places by train instead of plane as I find train travel more pleasant than flying in general. All in all it was good fun!
