      #11 Ocean Pitch @ Croyed

      Gegen frühen Abend sind wir schließlich in Croyed angekommen. Croyed Bay ist einer der berühmtesten Surfing Spots in England. Wir hatten mit etwas Glück an einem schönen und einfachen Campingplatz direkt an der Bucht die erste Nacht in North Devon zu verbringen. Wir hatten diesen Platz relativ spontan gebucht und waren überrascht wie voll er nun war. Wir haben den Abend mit einem leckeren Selbstgekochten verbracht und mit einem ausgiebigen Beachwalk in der Bucht. Der Strand ist ungefähr einen Kilometer breit, aber wunderschön. Und so naturbelassen. Das liegt natürlich auch ein wenig an Ebbe und Flut deren Höhenunterschied in dieser Region bis zu 15 Meter betragen kann. Platz 3. hinter zwei Gebieten in Kanada. Insgesamt gibt es gleich einen anderen Flair, wenn in der Abendsonne zahlreich Menschen ihr Bierchen am Strand genießen, oder sich auf dem Surfboard in den Wellen versuchen.

      Das ist der letzte Tagescampingplatz. Als nächstes werden wir auf einen Campingplatz ganz in der Nähe gehen, wo wir 7 Nächte bleiben werden. Wir freuen uns auf entspannte Tage. Lena geht es jetzt wieder besser nach ihrer Erkältung und ich habe wieder etwas mit der Zunge zu tun. Aber bei möglichen Bronchien ist die Meerluft hoffentlich das richtige. :)      Read more

      Day 5 Braunton

      Dauer: 7 Stunden
      Höhenmeter: ca. 700 m
      Wetter: regnerisch und mittlerer bis starker Wind
      Tatsächlich regnet es ab der Mitte der Nacht und der Wind zerrt an meinem Zelt in alle Richtungen, ein richtiger Sturm ist es aber nicht. Das Zelt hält dem zum Glück ohne große Probleme stand, es wackelt zwar, mehr aber auch nicht - guter Praxistest. Als ich aufstehe, hat der Regen nachgelassen, sodass ich alles bis auf das Zelt selber trocken einpacken kann. Mit dem Bus geht es an den gleichen Ort, wo ich tags davor aufgehört habe und dann gehts wieder los. Das Wetter bleibt den ganzen Tag wechselhaft, von Regen, viel und wenig Wind bis ein bisschen Sonne ist alles dabei. So ein Wetter habe ich erwartet, wenn ich an England an der Küste denke. Die Route ist mal wieder sehr abwechslungsreich, über sanfte Hügel, felsigen Abschnitten und kleine Touristen-Orte bis hin zu Strand. An dem Tag habe ich fast ein Zehntel des Wegs zurückgelegt, Wahnsinn! So langsam machen sich auch erste Abnutzungserscheinungen bemerkbar: Ein paar Blasen bahnen sich an und Muskelkater ist definitiv am Start.       Woolacombe to Braunton

      Because of where our accommodation was, we decided to go off the Coast Path about two-thirds along the way which reduced our walk by nearly 6 miles. Not only did this make our walk easier, but it also meant we ended up with more time at our B & B, Silver Cottage, which is by far the best we have stayed at. We have our own room (!) plus a lovely kitchen/living room AND a lovely outside eating area.

      Our host, Sophie, is delightful and, on our arrival, made us a pot of tea accompanied by scones, jam and cream. We had a 10 minute walk in to the high street where we bought wine, ready-to-eat meals, wine, cheese and crackers from the COOP and enjoyed eating in - as seems our wont!

      Whilst having our dinner, we could hear the bells ringing so Tuesday is practice night in Braunton. Note to John: Claire is keen to become a bell ringer!

      Braunton, Saunton Sands and Croyde

      Popped to Braunton to look at the shops, lovely pub lunch 🍻 (pub looked dodgy but was really nice). Slushy surf at Saunton Sands but Al and me had a little play🌊, then an ice cream 🍦and donuts 🍩 at Croyde.

      Croyde to Lower Yellard

      21 miles

      Last night, I indulged in a second dinner of smashed burger and chips at the canp site. I set off this morning at 6.30am. My tent was soaked.

      The beach was packed with surfers jostling for waves. High tide was in but I managed to wak along the beach to pick up the Coatal Path. The next couple of hours was spent walking on a busy road from Croyde to Braunton. It was not a pleasant experience. I intended to walk the 3 mile length of Saunton Sands but the tide was lapping against the dunes. This meant a boring walk along Braunton Marsh.
      The temperature was 23C with no wind.
      I was feeling pretty fed up and was considering bailing out at Barnstable. These thoughts persisted all the way along the sea defences around the Taw estuary to Barnstable.
      I bought some lunch and sat watching a demonstration again race hate. I ended up chatting to a police woman managing the event. She told me that I would miss some amazing scenery if I bailed out.
      I did research trains from Barnstable home for today and for the first time ever, I’ve got to thank the rail strikes - no trains. Decision made.
      One pint later, I was back on the trail which also encompasses the Tarka trail and yomping towards Biddeford, listening to AC/DC. Fine music to get the miles in.
      The trail continued to be easy but very boring. I arrived at my amazing campsite very footsore.
      Fate has interceded because this one has a BREWERY…hurrah 🍺.
      Admin done, I will have a light tea and a few beers. I feel that a snore fest is coming on. I am staying another night here so will do a light pack day tomorrow to Westward Ho!      Read more
