      Bridport

      June 20, 2021 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Bridport is a small, but very attractive market town. We cross the River Brit, on our way back from a walk to Lower Eype, to reach St Mary's Parish Church and then walk up South Street to get to the Town Hall (both Grade 1 listed buildings) - the town hall is situated on the curiously named Buckydoo Square.

We walk up East Street and cross the River Asker, a tributary of the Brit, and walk down though Asker's Meadow crossing back over the river close to its confluence with the Brit, to walk back up to the church.

We head south alongside the River Brit and see Palmer"s Brewery - which was established in 1794 and is one of Britain's oldest and prettiest brewery sites - before following the Hardy Way back down to the coast and West Bay.

      Bridport

      October 6, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We stayed on a site just north of Bridport, our intention was to do some walking along the coastal path, as this is a section that we have not previously completed.
We spent one lazy day at the site as the rain was pretty continuous and K wanted to get on with some sewing. Two new baby quilts to get done before Xmas and our trip down under in January.
On Tuesday we walked into Bridport and got the bus to Charmouth, where we set off down to the sea to join the south west coastal path as we intended to walk back to our site via West Bay. This is a hilly section, and the forecast was that there may be the odd shower coming through by mid afternoon so we set off quite early for us. The walk was fabulous with great views from the top of the cliffs - we took in Golden Cap where we could see from Portland Bill to the east through to the Devonshire coast in the west.
Just after that the odd shower did come through!!!!!! It was almost biblical- we were soaked through in a 15 minute squall complete with hail stones and driving rain. Luckily the weather turned for long enough for the wind to dry us out a bit prior to a tea stop in West Bay - we left the cafe still dripping.
Walking back to our site we were quite weary after a total of 12.5 miles of mostly ascent and descent along this beautiful section of our coast.
On Wednesday we walked into Bridport passing through a farm shop famous as one of the locations in the Broadchurch TV series which was next to our site. A small market was operating in Bridport which we found to be a nice town with lots of independent shops.

Day Eight. Paul goes to Poole

      September 24, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Chaos. Packing up the caravan is chaos, and it reminds me why this is not my usual type of holiday. Self-catering is stressful. Self-catering is what we do at home. This is why I go on holiday - to get away from this. Cupboards full of stuff we clearly didn’t need. And Jean goes to town, of course.

I prefer travelling light. This is harder with a baby and dog in tow, but we still seem to manage to be the first ones packed and ready to go. The victory is short lived, however, as we are roped into helping the others as a reward for our preparedness.

Eventually the three cars are packed and ready to go. John went back to hand in the caravan keys and I went to book us a spot swimming. Today it was Amy, Will, John, Bella and I. We decided not to take Lily again as we wouldn’t be able to wash her for a long time and the showers in the pool are too hot even for me.

After a fun swim, we started to make a move for Poole. First mission was to get petrol as my tank was empty after the last week. This of course proved to be harder than usual as there is allegedly a fuel shortage. Still, after queuing and paying way more than I would usually, we finally got underway again and ended up in the town of Bridport for lunch.

We stopped at a little cafe called Moore Than Tea, where I had an awesome cheese and caramelised onion toastie and butterscotch milkshake. Becky had a BLT and a latte. Eventually Jean, John, Amy and Will caught up with us too, even though they said they’d stop at their own convenience.

We were first on the road again and headed off towards Poole. There was a lot of traffic.

Eventually we arrived at about 5. Poole reminded me of Portsmouth. I was sure I’d done a delivery here once before, but it looked totally different from what I thought it would.

Becky and I took Wispa and Lily for a walk down to the quay and back before having a massive dinner with the family. All in all, a hectic day on far too little sleep!
