      Birmingham

      July 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Our drive into Birmingham was made much less stressful by Jeremy's remote help desk advice. We connected my phone to the car's sat nav screen and used Google Maps instead. This lady has a MUCH better handle on things. What would we do without Jeremy!
We called in at the Christadelphian Office. Last time we were there I discovered Hannah Dunnett's artwork and I restocked. Spent way too much! I treated myself to one of her mugs, but it's wrapped in bubble wrap so no photo. I love the way she weaves Bible quotes into her artwork.
After that we found a Patchwork and Quilting shop 5 minutes down the road, but alas it is now only an online shop. I could only peer through the window.

      Aunty Ivy

      August 23, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Around lunch time, we picked up Sheila to head down to Reddich, to meet with some cousins, then head to the care home to see Aunty Ivy.
All 8 of use sat around and talked about family and what we had been doing.
Ivy is a lovely lady, she may be blind and hard of hearing, but she is the sweetest and still cracks jokes.
I’m very blessed to have been able to see her again.
After visiting Ivy, we headed back to Debs (dads cousin) for dinner.
Also her Dog Boo is super cute.

    • Day 51

      Longbridge

      July 15, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Ichl half also ihr beim Streichen ihres Hauses.

      Married a publican's great granddaughter

      August 22, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Mary's great grandmother sold the Great Stone Inn in 1901. Each trip to England we pay it a visit, say hello to the locals and have a few drinks and a meal. Mary's dad was born in Rose Cottage, which is next door to the pound which in turn is next door to the pub. Across the road from the pub is the church and behind the pub is the school. I guess Mary's dad had everything he needed within easy reach.

We put flowers on Mary's relatives graves and had a wander around - very peaceful and relaxing.

Speaking of graves, we also made our pilgrimage to Robin and Andy Gibb's graves ... at St Mary's church in Thame.

The B&B where we are staying, Scotsgrove House, was mentioned in the domesday book of 1086, sort of an audit of the assets of England won by William the Conqueror. So, it is old - perhaps 1100 years, an dthe church, where the Gibbs are buried, is at least 900 years old, but they think there are older ruins beneath. The Church near the Great Stone Inn was built by the Norman's in the 12th century - but is also the site of Roman ruins from who knows when.

Mary and I love this history and knowing that people have lived and worshipped here for so long - we did brag that our church, St James has celebrated its 100 year anniversary this year - still a long way to go.

Tomorrow its the local street market, a 7 mile walk on an old disused train line and then to explore the Midsummer Murder locations around town.

      Cheers,

      Sorehill Mill

      February 29, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Hier hat Tolkien seine Kindheit verbracht (oder nen Teil davon). Museum war geschlossen, schön und "atmosphärisch" war es trotzdem.

    • Day 50

      Bromsgrove

      May 20, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

When traveling for nearly two months it's always difficult to choose one event or destination as a favorite.

After all, we've been to so many beautiful, historic and storied places, had fabulous meals, reconnected with old friends and tasted wonderful wines.

Who would have imagined that one of my highlights of this journey would have started in the little English hamlet of Bromsgrove?

Yesterday we arrived here and immediately made our way to meet with my 94 year old Aunt Roma, who, the last time I saw her was half that age! As soon as we walked into the room where she was waiting, even Brenda, who had never met her before, picked her out of the crowd. The family resemblance to my sister, Dena, and my late mother is uncanny. My Mum left us much too young and Roma gave me a glimpse of what Mum would have been like had she lived to a ripe old age. Roma is spry, witty and charming and recounted many tales from her youth about my Mum. It was a wonderful visit.

My cousin Phil and his wife Pauline then arrived to drive us all to Worcestershire where we had lunch at cousin Richard and his wife, Jude's home along with my cousin Trevor, his wife, Claire and their two children.

Jude went above and beyond to meet our vegan and gluten free dietary requirements with an awesome choice of vegetables, potatoes, rice, vegan chili and even homemade gluten-free pie and vegan meringues accompanied by mountains of fresh berries. Everything was amazing!

Dinner conversation was lively and included a video chat with my sister Dena and her husband, Ed.

When all was said and done, we all vowed that we wouldn't wait another 47 years to get together again.

      What a wonderful day!

Time to stay at a real B&B

      August 16, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Time to say goodbye to Manchester and head down to Birmingham. We checkout late 11:35 then spent an hour in the lounge working on diaries. The drive to Birmingham is pretty straight forward, although on very busy roads - but still should only take about 2 hours.

There are too many cars on UK roads, especially the M56 and M6. We saw our first car accident - hope no-one was badly hurt - but police and ambulances came from everywhere. Adding to the congestion, they are digging up the old concrete and relaying large sections of the M6. So again a bumper to bumper trip - with Mary's help we didn't miss a turn off. We have named the inbuilt SatNav in the car "Isabel" and my windscreen SatNav "Andrea" - so I have three of them telling me what to do - can't go wrong!

We arrived at the B&B Woodlands - and it is just what we were hoping for. Met the owner, he was working in the garden and he told us about the walks around his three lakes on the property and the walks to the nearest pub and local villages along the canal.

Off for a walk - he is proud that he has stocked his lakes with carp - think he should try Trout. We went down some country walking lanes to the local pub - a "pub in a paddock" type of thing. The canal boats look great but were too expensive for just Mary and I - you really need 4 or 6 per people boat.

After our walk [about 6km's] we drove down to Alevchurch and posted our post cards - hope they reach home before we do. Had dinner at the Victoria Hotel - I had pizza - bad decision ... she said most Australians had fish and chips - I wanted a change - should have just stuck to the beer.

Tomorrow we head down to the south coast of England - not sure where we are staying - but it should be more fun and adventure.

      Cheers,

      That's All Folks

      May 21, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Well it's all hands on deck today as we have to pack, strip the beds, clean and re-make the beds before heading up to the Golf Club for lunch . Salad I think as I have now reached capacity on the food levels.

We check over the villa one last time and start the drive to the airport, on the way we noticed the temperature on the Sat Nav, it has reached the magic 100 degrees.

We arrived in plenty of time for our 7.40 pm departure that is until we have an almighty storm with torrential rain, thunder and lightning. We board the plane 40 minutes after we should have taken off and then sit there for over one and a half hours before we finally take off.

We have a good flight considering it's still lightning when we take off but not too restful. It was interesting being able to watch our progress on the in-flight information on our personal Tv's and the camera on outside of the plane gave wonderful pictures. Thank goodness we have a taxi waiting for us and we don't have to drive home.

The end to a wonderful holiday, thanks Fiona and Mark for the great company and loads of laughs xx
