Day One .. In London. . Is Done

      July 11, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Well, if you only have 6 days in London, you want to go hard.... so we did. The day started off with breakfast in the apartment and then we were riding the subway down to Buckingham Palace. We toured around the outside for a bit and then we walked the mall down to Trafalgar Square. It was just cool sites after cool sites... so what did we decide to do next..... the M&M store.

We also stopped and got same day cheap..er tickets to see "The Mousetrap".. the longest continuous running play ever. Going on 70 years now.

With that purchased, we went to do lunch. We saw a Sherlock Pub so we decided to try there. But when we opened up the menu, it was identical to the Beehive Inn in Edinburgh, where we ate on our last day. I mean.... identical. It must be owed by the same company. So we decided to go elsewhere. We ended up at this Italian restaurant that had wood fired pizzas and bruscetta, and spaghetti. It was wonderful.

Then bit more wandering until we ended up at the British Museum. What a cool place. We saw the Rosetta Stone, a bunch of Greek statues, some clocks, and we finally found the chess pieces Evan has been obsessed about since Dublin. He was pretty excited.

After that we headed back to the apartment to have a quick bite to eat and refresh a bit before the play. It was a hot day today and we sure sweat a lot so it was good to relax and have a shower.

Then we were off to the show. We were on the third balcony and seating was tight, but we could see the play fine and it was a lot of fun. One of the rules about Mousetrap is, you can't talk about Mousetrap so we will leave it at that. But go if you get the chance.

Then it was riding the underground at night back to our place and off to bed.

Today we clocked in 24,673 steps. Pretty good for such a hot day. Hopefully we walk a bit less tomorrow. But... we shall see.

      Until then.

      "The City" walk part 2

      April 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

The walk continued :) The building with the green roof is the Australian "embassy," the interior of which was used for Gringotts in the Harry Potter movies. The timber-framed building is one of the few to have survived the fire.Read more

Day 3 - london to thirsk

      May 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Stayed last night in the Premier Inn, Heathrow terminal 4. Good nights sleep. Todays mission is to get to Jon's sister Jill's place.!

Took the underground to Kings Cross Station. There was a queue of people lining up to get their photo taken next to a brick wall. Platform 9 and 3/4, like Harry Potter.

Went to the british museum. It was great. Wandered around London for a while before catching the train to Thirsk.

      "The City" walk part 1

      April 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Might be the best city walk I've done so far. This is the old heart of London, with a lot of neat history both on the surface and buried beneath the modern veneer. The round church pictured is the Temple Church, famed for it's association with the Knights Templar.Read more

    • Leisurely London Life & Sotheby’s

      June 6, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

With the right Royal 👑 Extravaganza extinguished, the four day lavish long weekend over I decided on a more leisurely ladies day 😜Determined to have a FULL English breakfast 🍳 I went on the hunt down back alleyways and cobbled roads in search of just that. Boy! Did I get it! Eggs 🍳 poached to perfection, crispy bacon 🥓 pork sausages, magicAL mushrooms 🍄 grilled tomatoes 🍅 homemade baked beans 🫘 and black pudding (which I reluctantly tried). Just between you & the grease also helped the indulgence in one too many beverages last night! 😜🥳😵‍💫😵‍💫

      HOLD THE FARM!
      …the Jubilee Continues 👑👑👑

My wanderings bought me to Sothebys in New Bond Street and what a surprise… A Jubilee exhibition of amazing and priceless tiaras! Not only were they exquisite but Diana‘s wedding day Tara was on display. See first video. The second video is of Queen Victoria‘s tiara. I died and went to tiara 👑 heaven 😇😇😇 And! Yes LT: that’s the gayest thing I’ve said all week! 🫣🫣😜😜

There was also an exhibition of history’s strongest female monarchs from Queen Mary to Queen Elizabeth II. Feast your senses on these! What a find! There is also a painting which was done by Winston Churchill… It was fascinating! Most of these artworks were hundreds of thousands of pounds and into the millions! And, even better for us poor people, especially after this holiday, lightning speed free Wi-Fi and very comfy couches in our sumptuously decorated reception area…

At this rate The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations May never end! And, why should they! 🥳🎉👍🏻❤️👑🇬🇧

PS: I forgot to mention the beautiful Balan from Romania… 🔥🔥🔥🥰🥰🥰 As I was strolling along Bond Street where all the high-end retail is, this absolutely gorgeous male model type tempted me to come into the skincare shop and he did a full demonstration of face wash and cream… He was so beautiful and a sparkling personality… I wish I had of got a picture of him but I was mesmerised and starstruck and forgot to! He asked me if I knew Dracula… In a sexy accent, and then told me he was the son of Dracula! He was an absolute Charmer!

Damn!… Yes, I also bought the facecream LOL 😝🫠🤦‍♂️🔥🥰

      Full day in London!

      February 9 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Full London day woooo! Cloudy with a chance of even more clouds. But that didn’t stop us! We went to the Camden markets and strolled around there which felt like we could go on and on forever. I bought some socks! But those markets had absolutely everything you could dream of, including a burger the size of your head. No seriously we saw these people get a burger and it was. Ginormous. Anyway fun little highlight. Then we trained to Kings Cross Station where the plan WAS to go see the 9 & 3/4 shop but it was being renovated :(( so the next closest thing to witches hats were fluffy hat guards at at Buckingham Palace! Not really too much to say. It was a cool building with a cool statue and fluffy hat guards. But then we made our way over to Westminster Abbey and Big Ben - both of which definitely lived up to their name! On the way there we passed through St James’s park which meant seeing pelicans and feeding squirrels! Big highlight for sure. We contemplated going on the London Eve but London weather was being London weather so we decided not to. We went to Covent Gardens for a big shop in the huge mall, we also saw some super cool opera and a string quintet gigging! Man that was cool. Then it was tiiiiime! Time for Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club!…almost. We stopped off at a few bookshops on our way there just because we had some spare time. After a good read we went to go see Philip Lassiter and his funk band and wowzers that was something I’m never gonna forget. Best jazz club I’ve ever seen and out of this world playing. I even got a photo with the guy! We went to his 1st of 2 sets so we had time to go to a local pub afterwards. These English pubs sure know what they’re doing. We headed home after and we both crashed zzzzRead more

      Esher/London

Temperature: 11 degrees this morning in Esher and a high of 12 degrees in London this afternoon.

Went out for our normal morning walk before catching train and Underground to have one last quick nose around V&A before heading to Kensington Palace. As we were trying to get to the palace, we got caught up in a downpour, we tried to shelter under a tree with no leaves until we saw two policemen standing under a shelter outside the Israeli Consulate, so we headed straight to them. They were very kind and let us share their small shelter.
Huge queue to get into Kensington Palace. I must say we both preferred Hampton Court Palace.
By the time we had finished in the palace, it was fine, so we enjoyed a leisurely stroll to our accommodation at the VSC. It is still very much a Lebanese area with not many English speaking folk, felt very much out of place. We are close to Marble Arch.
Tonight we went to a local pub for dinner and as it wasn't raining then walked around Portman Park.

      London

      May 14, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Jamie, our guide, saw my email address and said that the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has the nickname, Boejo! Oh, dear…not sure that I want to share the name with him!
Rebecca and I were on our own for today. We took off to Notting Hill to a very large street market. These markets are a part of the culture in Europe and can be found everyday in many towns. We got there early, but it became crowded rather quickly. The area is so charming with all the colored townhouses. We stopped in at the Travel Book Store from the movie “Notting Hill” with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
Our next stop was Kensington Palace and where we saw the Diana statue. William and Kate live there. We walked a little in Kensington Gardens.
We had an excellent lunch and gelato at an Italian restaurant cafe… we were in great need to rest our feet!
Our last stop was Trafalgar where we dropped into the National Gallery for a quick peek of some of our favorite painters’ works…Monet, VanGogh, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Constable, and Gainsborough’s paintings including Blue Boy.
We walked and toured nonstop for 8 hours today, so we returned to hotel at 5:30 and are in for the night. We both need to rest up for our flight to Edinburgh tomorrow where we will begin our Scotland trip.

      29th December

      December 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Marble Arch, London

Temperature: 9 degrees here this morning with a high of 9 degrees.
Today, we walked through Hyde Park and St James Park to go to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard. Anyone would think it was the weekend because even though we arrived really early, we couldn't get to where the change would be, so we decided to head up The Mall and watch them march down. We found a great spot, so that was good. From there, we walked to Fortun and Masons as I had never been inside. Thoroughly enjoyed looking around there, it was amazing. From there, we caught the underground to have one more look at Covent Garden, but it was packed. We had a delicious hot chocolate at Hotel Chocolat before using the underground to get us to Marble Arch. It was a full-on day, and we absolutely loved our cup of tea once we arrived back at the VSC.
We stayed in tonight and had at the club.

London in October - so much better

      October 16, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Der Londontag mit Schülern gehört ja nicht zu den Tagen der Sprachreise, die ich besonders mag. Immer dieselbe Sightseeingtour. Viel zu viele Menschen. Heiß, stickig, laut.
Aber heute war es anders: viel viel weniger Menschen, super Timing um das Changing of the Guards zu sehen, eine andere Stimmung in der Stadt durch die veränderten Lichtverhältnisse außerdem ein nettes Mittagstreffen mit Jenny (language assistant from last year) und die Tatsache, dass die Schüler doch wirklich interessiert waren und eine nette Kollegin, die weiß was zu tun ist ... jetzt müssen wir nur mehr spätabends gut und ohne Vorkommnisse retour in Seaford landen ....Read more
