      The Parrys have Landed

      June 10, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Hello from Frodsham, England
      The Parrys have assembled.
Mike and I had a long but smooth journey via Frankfurt then back to Manchester. ( long explanation than involves not wanting to fly Rouge). Al and Natalie met us and we had a fairly quiet first couple of days that included the required first trip to pub to help with jet-lag. Mike assures me this is evidence-based- [picture enclosed]. On Sunday morning , very bright and early , the Parrys from Whitehorse and Ottawa arrived bleary-eyed but smiling. Natalie and Al have been the perfect hosts and they filled everyones’ bellies with porridge, toast and bacon upon arrival. Sounds like Air Transat was fine to travel with but they didn’t waste extra money on a hot breakfast . We all managed a walk in the fields and some shut eye before we headed out to pub for a rendezvous with Al’s sons Dan and Mike and their families. It was a great evening with lots of laughter and photographs. Mike and Rian brought Welsh soccer shirts and hats for the boys which they have been proudly sporting. Tara mentioned over and over just how nice it was to see her cousins again and to meet their families. We returned to Al’s place for the “after party. “. Then we all crashed for a long rest last night. Rogan was first up at 5 am and completed a workout before the rest of us got up. He is committed to his training for paddling this summer.
Today after another hardy breakfast we headed into Chester. Mike led the group to see the old Roman city walls. We then headed into Wales with a stop at another great pub The Eagle and Child for lunch. More large plates of hearty food including huge, stacked hamburgers. The boys are in heaven! We visited the village of Meliden and found the graves of Mike’s Aunty Joyce and Uncle Bill. Some of you will have met Mike’s Aunty Joyce. She died only 2 years ago. We also found Mike’s Grandparents’ grave in the church cemetery. Finally, we climbed the Gop ( a large hill) where Mike’s parents ashes were scattered. Beautiful views over Wales from the top. So it was a day for Mike to share his stories and memories. Tara, Ryan, Niki and I also have some memories from the area and it was nice to go back.
We now have two rental cars. Ryan and Mike are driving with Niki and I taking the lead as navigators. Some of the Welsh laneways we were on today were very, very narrow and the car alerts were beeping often. Tomorrow we load up and head to the Snowdonia area. Unfortunately, weather forecast is not looking great for the “big Parry Mount Snowdon ascent” planned for Wednesday.
      More to follow from Bedgelert.
Hope all is well at home.
I’ll send pictures in a couple of batches.
      Love Heather (Mom) xx

      Anderton Boat Lift

      August 22, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Boat lifts were used if there wasn't enough room for a staircase lock to be built. This one, called Cathedral of the Canals, was built in 1875 between the river Weaver and the canal. It has two caissons (tanks) of water in which the boats float. Then the lift brings the boat 50 feet to the next level.Read more

      Quarry Bank

      September 6, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      Last day of travel.
Leaving for Berlin tomorrow which means that we have to actually pack a suitcase.
It seems impossible that what we brought with us has reproduced as it has.
The cleaning of the car was quite cathartic although it was sad to see those apples we bought 4 weeks ago finally hit the bin.
Bernadette ‘s confident declaration that we’ll eat them today was wearing a bit thin.
Ah well, can always leave some socks.

Last site is Quarry Bank a site from the early Industrial Revolution with a textile mill and village.
Has an apprentice house where 90 childrn under the age of 16 used to live.
Work 6 days a week 630 to 700, church on Sunday morning (4 mile walk), school Sunday afternoon. Non paid just board and lodging. The mill was considered quite advanced as there was no corporal punishment!!!!

Light rain, what a place in winter. As it changed over years it also incorporated, steam and hydro to power the place. it only closed in 1956 but we assume (hope) thr kids had gone by then.

Quite different and a good finish even in the rain.

      Trentham Gardens

      August 3, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more

      D15 England - Stoke-on-Trent

      July 19, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Potteries, potteries, potteries. We made it to the land of potteries - Moorcroft, Portmeirion, Wedgewood and our new favourite - Emma Bridgewater.

You can’t come to this part of England and not make a pitstop to at least one of these very dynamic workplaces. It turned out, that we only made it to Emma’s place as time was against us, and there was plenty to see at that particular pottery - new wares, mini walled gardens, samples shop and a dainty tea house to boot! We ate one of our most delicious lunches so far off some of the most delicious poteeey we’ve used. The potato and onion soup, veggie and hommus sandwich and tomato mozzarella salad all tasted better than it would served on any other plate.

We paid a quick visit to the Italianate gardens of Trentham Estate, an expansive Capability Brown garden. The intense blue cornflower meadows, dandelion fairy sculptures and long vistas were just a few of the highlights. The huge swathes if perennial colour saw Anthony snap happy, once again.

That evening, we drove over to Alsager to visit some of Anthony’s old friends who fed and watered us well in their gorgeous little home full of life - children and a garden that’ll have you reeling with envy! Many strawberries were consumed in a very short timeframe.

We finally crashed at our picture perfect hotel at he back of a pub in the middle of the countryside- but not before we toasted the day with a glass or two of Malbec!

"Looking at this painting on screen in different sizes, gives so many possibilities. My first thought was of Temptation, and so my hopes were for the ability to resist the major ones. Focussing on a different aspect of the painting, there is growth and the roots of new beginnings."Read more

      Sizergh Castle

      April 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today we are coming almost full circle to where we started. We are visiting Sizergh Castle a medieval manor filled with treasure collected by 26 generations of the Strickland family. At our first attempt at parking we find car park is full with no space for our now larger Motorhome so we leave and visit the near by farm shop. After a spot of lunch we attempt the castle again this time with more luck.
The castle is two storey and we're allowed to walk around freely with guides every now and then to answer any questions you may have.
We walked around the gardens which in a few weeks time will be full of colour before heading to our last stopover at The Tavern at Hale, another freebie in exchange for a meal. Bangers and mash for me Cheese Pie for Martin, too many syns but very nice.
