      Golden Fleece, York

The Golden Fleece is an inn in York, England, which has a free house pub on the ground floor and four guest bedrooms above. It dates back to at least the early 16th century, and claims to be the most haunted public house in York.

The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, commonly known as York Minster, is the cathedral of York, North Yorkshire, England, and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the third-highest office of the Church of England (after the monarch as Supreme Governor and the Archbishop of Canterbury), and is the mother church for the Diocese of York

      York - England (1)

      July 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

York Castle is a fortified complex in the city of York, England. It consists of a sequence of castles, prisons, law courts and other buildings, which were built over the last nine centuries on the south side of the River Foss. The now ruined keep of the medieval Norman castle is commonly referred to as Clifford's Tower. Built originally on the orders of William I to dominate the former Viking city of Jórvík, the castle suffered a tumultuous early history before developing into a major fortification with extensive water defences.

Margaret Clitherow (1556 – 25 March 1586) was an English saint and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church,[2] known as "the Pearl of York". She was pressed to death for refusing to enter a plea to the charge of harbouring Catholic priests. She was canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul VI.

      Guy Fawkes

Guy took the name Guido during his time in Spain.

      1570AD - 1606AD

On 5th November 1605 a York man, Guy Fawkes, was discovered about to ignite 36 barrels of gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament.  His aim was to spark a Catholic revolution.

      Exploring York

Had a day wondering around York, visited Yorkminster, went to the market (got some plums so I don't get scurvy), the York Castle Tower, the Castle Museum, saw a comedy circus street performance, had a tour around the Treasurer's House, visited thr Jorvik Viking Experience (think its a small world viking version) and finished the day relaxing in the park.

Fun fact of the day: York Castle Tower is home to the world's first flushing toilet, built for King Henry 3

      York, UK

      July 29, 2018 in England ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

      Bonjour 👋🏻,

    • Day 6

London to Stratford Upon Avon to York

      May 22, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After an early 7.30am start out of busy London our first destination was 160 km North to Stratford-upon-Avon to see its wealth of beautiful black and white timber framed buildings. We visited the home and birthplace of William Shakespeare which was full of interesting memorabilia and artefacts relating to his life. Our second stop for the day and our overnight destination on day 1 of the tour was the historic town of York a further 238km North. We strolled the narrow lanes filled with quaint colourful shops including the Shambles, a maze of twisting and turning streets filled with overhanging timber framed buildings dating back to the 14 century. Another of our stops was to England’s largest medieval cathedral York Minster dating back to the 7th century. Our tour director provided much historical information on a number of buildings and landmarks throughout the day.
The group of 30 rounded off the day with a delightful dinner at our Hilton hotel.
