    Corbridge Roman Town

    September 17 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Corbridge (originally called Coria) was founded well before Hadrian's Wall was built; the wall is 2.5 miles away to the north (the nearest Milecastle is 22). It was originally a military fort, but evolved into the most northerly town in the Roman Empire due to its position at the junction of two major Roman roads (Dere Street and Stanegate).

We explore the ruins of the fort, seeing what would have been the main street, including the large granaries and market. The museum is excellent and we see the Corbridge Hoard, found in 1964 and concealed in a wooden chest hidden away by a footsoldier, and marvel at the sculptures, including the Corbridge Lion; found in 1907, it dates from the second century, and was originally intended to adorn a grave.

Der blev spist Lam på "The black bull", det var så mørt at det kunne spises med øjenbrynene. En hyggelig by, med mange ensrettet gader.

    Det ser da dejlig ud😍

    Det var virkelig godt

    Ja lam er godt.

    Roman ruins

    September 26, 2016 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

I was sorry to leave the North York Moors. I made my way north through the Pennines to Corbridge and Chesterswhere I looked at Roman ruins.
They were interesting and different to the medievel ruins I seen.

    Scotland is beautiful.

I'm in a town just outside of Edinburgh. I thought I had booked an apartment in the centre of Edinburgh but the fine print had the address in Loanhead. I'm not happy about it but short of losing my money there isn't much I can do.

We slept in Corbridge, a little way off the route but with excellent B&Bs and a few shops to buy essential provisions for the last day walking through countryside. Our B&B, the Pear Tree, was amazing! Giant bed and great breakfast.Read more
