      Friday in London

      September 13, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Must quickly report Friday before we go off to breakfast - now Saturday morning. It was a great day....we first had a walk around - along Piccadilly, Burlington Arcade, had a pot of tea in Fortnum’s, and ended up in Leicester square to see Downton Abbey the movie. So good!! A feel good movie that anyone who enjoyed the series would love. A continuation of events in the lives of all the people, and gorgeous visually of course. So that was lots of fun, and relaxing, and at 6 o’clock we met Omnia, who is now back in the UK, and going to spend the weekend with us here before we go back to Liverpool with her on Monday.

So we found an amazing Basque restaurant right near the Novello theatre where we went to Mamma Mia. We had been going to have Italian yet again, but Amr spotted this place and it was absolutely fabulous!! Really special, and not madly expensive, but divine food, and really artistically presented. The only photos of this day will be food!! After that great meal we went round the corner to Mamma Mia....such fun. Full theatre of ABBA fans, and great show, energetic and happy...so altogether a feel good, happy day. Must get ready to go to breakfast!

      oi, London pri-ee noice in’it!

      September 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

This week has been incredible and non-stop, so I am going to do some bullet points:

      • Big Ben is pretty big
      • Blueberry Danish with crème
      • Ed Sheeran’s restaurant, Bertie Blossoms (see the Burrata)
      • The Imperial War Museum (featuring a Dutch army helmet!)
      • The Globe Theatre
      • Unauthorized private Banksy Collection
      • The Gunner Pub (“what do we think of Tottenham? … 💩!”)
      • Harry Potter Statue
      • Covent Garden

London is such a fun and lively city, it is so accessible, and there are so many wonderful things to see! If only the underground tube wasn’t one million degrees (yes, in Celsius)…

      Day Trip Into London

      September 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This is our last full day in Europe. We’ve arranged to take the train to London and spend the day taking in some of the highlights. First we had a short drive to get gas and return the car to the rental place. Boy did it feel good to be done with that! We were really looking forward to a relaxing train trip and walk about the city today. We boarded our commuter train shortly after dropping off the car.

The plan was to start our day in London with an Uber Boat cruise on the Thames. Our train from Guildford took us to Waterloo Station. We took a metro train to the river at Canary Wharf where we boarded the boat. We stayed on the boat all the way to Battersea Power Station and back to Westminster where we got off to start a walking tour. We were able to see many London sights on the cruise, including Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament … The Big Eye, Battersea Power Station.

Once on foot, we walked on the promenade along the river from Westminster to the Millenium Bridge where we crossed over the Thames and walked up St. Paul’s Cathedral. From there we went past Big Ben, Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. We followed Birdcage Walk and other streets to Smithfield Market then, for our final stop, we walked to Covent Gardens, a very busy, popular shopping area and market.

From there it was quick and easy to make our way back to the metro, catch the train back to Waterloo Station and then a fast, direct commuter train back to Guildford. In Guildford, we walked to a restaurant where you can choose from a variety of noodle and rice dishes on a touchscreen and pay with your card. Your order is sent automatically to the kitchen and you soon get your meal.

      Covent Garden & Soho

      March 24 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Read more

Squares, Soho, Soft serve and a Show

      August 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A big day. Spent the morning around Covent Garden markets for coffee and a cookie. Explored the knooks and crannies including toy shops, tea and crochet designs upon post boxes. Then saw the pelicans brought by a Russian royal to St James’ Park and wandered down The Mall, past the grand Old Duke of York atop the column, and finally Buckingham Palace. As expected, it was seriously busy in front of the adorned gates - the Duke’s 10,000 men perhaps? Almost more in awe of the planting and decoration in front of the palace then the palace itself, but it was fun to see the guards and the balcony in person. Also amazing to see Wellington Arch as I’d just listened to a podcast about it’s many movements (how did they move it, it’s so huge!). Then passing Go to Mayfair; dark royal blue and as expensive as expected. We got a fresh poke bowl as we were anxious for lunch after so much walking and then walked through Berkeley Square where I listened for birdsong just in case. We overhead live jazz near Hyde Park, eyed the silver spoons and dishes at Harrods before taking a double decker and tube towards our dinner booking at Shack-Fuyu. The most amazing pre-theatre meal here based on the many times it comes up on the Off Menu podcast, and somehow exceeded expectations (the matcha soft serve with French toast, and miso aubergine 😍). Then to the 29,237th show of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap at St Martins Theatre, 70 years and still running. 70 years is plenty of time to get it right, and get it right they did. The scream of the actor finding the dead body was everything I could have hoped. 5 star show to end a very long day.Read more

      More of London

      September 26, 2023 in England

Ok ok ok I've been meaning to post this for many days now. Embarrassing that I am just now doing it. . . but here are some awesome moments from London.
It was Em's 20th birthday on September 26 so we went to dinner together. About 20 people squished into one table (too many in my opinion), but we had yummy dumplings. The next day some friends and I discovered Ed Sheeran's restaurant. Apparently he owns it? It had some amazing food and the best burrata I've ever had. That night we went to see a play called Mlima's Tale which was about the ivory trade. The main guy plays an elephant and he was fantastic (and also apparently was in the Barbie movie?) Then on September 29 we took a day trip to Coventry. We saw the Coventry Cathedral which was bombed during World War 2. The church is now committed to peace and reconciliation. We prayed the coventry litany of reconciliation with them. I would recommend reading it on your own! It is a great way to pray for the healing of our world. Churches around the world and especially in Europe often pray this prayer. That weekend I went to Borough's market which was super fun. Sarah, Mitchell, and I got cheese, bread, and Prosecco slushies. Perfect little snack.Read more

Saw Mamma Mia Play; Going Back to Hotel

      June 13, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

We saw the famous Mamma Mia play, and are now preparing to walk back to the hotel.
The play was amazing! The story was good, the music was great, and, the best part of it all, they basically threw a little concert with smoke, RGB lights, music, and everything else after the play! It was unlike any play experience I’ve ever had before, and it’s a shame that pictures and videos weren’t allowed.Read more

Covent Garden, Westminster & St James 🌼

      August 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      Mind the Gap! London

      July 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

      (Kate)

Dan and Samantha showed us an excellent time today in London. We started with the Portobello Road and Notting Hill markets, then went on to the British Library and saw a display of little things like the Magna Carta, a draft of a Monty Python script, a Mozart quartet manuscript, and lyrics for “Michelle” in Paul’s writing on the back of an envelope. We got rained on, rode in a black cab, and visited more than one pub, which all felt very British! We viewed some of the big sightseeing highlights and will do more of that tomorrow. We ended the day with fantastic fish and chips and some pints in their local pub. Jolly good day!
      1. So much history everywhere here! Lots of these little plaques referencing residents like Orwell, Kipling, etc.
2, 3., 4. Some of the many pubs we saw today.
      5. St. Pancras station. We arrived in London to this station yesterday but didn’t see the impressive front of the building.
      6. St. Martin in the Fields
      7. Big Ben, of course. We managed to hear it ring a couple of times.
      8. Richard the Lionhearted in front of Parliament
      9. Westminster Abbey
      10. Signage at the Dodo Micropub, Dan and Samantha’s local
