      We’re Negative!

      October 18, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

To embark the ship on Thursday, we need to not only have proof of our COVID-19 vaccines in hand, but also PCR or antigen test results showing that we are in good health.

Once we were settled into the room, we took out the e-Med testing kits we had purchased earlier this year. Using the free wi-fi provided by the hotel, we connected with testing proctors who gave us step by step instructions and watched as we followed through. Fifteen minutes later, we had what we wanted … a “single pink line” negative result for each of us!

We’re now all set for embarkation day. But first … a bit of relaxing tonight … and a bit of sightseeing tomorrow.

      Embarking Celebrity Silhouette

      October 20, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

As beautiful as the weather was yesterday, it was that crummy today … at least until late afternoon.

We woke up to decidedly chilly temps and rain, which continued on and off throughout the day. At times it was just a barely noticeable drizzle. At other times it was a downpour … usually short in duration. Keeping fingers crossed that we’d catch a break when it was time to embark Celebrity Silhouette, we went down to the dining room for our morning meal.

In fact, we did luck out a couple of times with the weather.

First, there was a break in the rain when we set off to drop off our checked bags with the longshoremen at the City Cruise Terminal. To double our luck, we found an old IKEA cart at the entrance to the port … which made managing our bags on the sidewalk that was in less than good condition much easier.

We had no desire to board the ship … it was only 10:30a and we planned to walk into town for some gelato before embarking Silhouette. But we wondered if we might be able to check-in while the terminal was still quiet. So we headed there next.

No problem … even though our check-in slot was between 1:00-1:30p. No one blinked an eye. They just directed us inside with instructions to have our passports and express passes handy. No lines anywhere … just a few passengers lallygagging here and there. Formalities took maybe 5 minutes and we were done. We would realize later just how lucky we were to have managed check-in so quickly.

Leaving the terminal, we walked out into ever-increasing rain. No can do on the walk into town for gelato. We had arranged for a late check out at noon at the Holiday Inn and left our carry-on bags there, so we returned to relax in our room for a while. A smart move, as it turns out. No sooner were we under cover that the rain really started to come down … the downpour lasting about an hour this time.

Another lucky break in the rain just as we decided to return to the terminal to embark the ship shortly after noon allowed us to walk to the City Cruise Terminal without getting wet. In fact, the clouds seemed to be moving out … the sun breaking through with patches of blue in the sky. Excellent!

Seeing the lines snaking around the waiting area inside the terminal — passengers queued up at least four deep, waiting their turn to check-in — made us appreciate our quick check-in this morning all the more. Since we’d completed the formalities already, we were allowed to skip the line with just a quick scan of our express passes and continue straight to the gangway.

The rest of our embarkation day story will be in the next footprint …

      New Forest

      June 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Sehr liberale Community.

      Southampton

      April 4 in England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

      Southampton/Isle of Wight

      June 11, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Over the weekend, we drove to meet family in Southampton. We took a ferry to the Isle of Wight, which is a seafront of beaches with dinosaur remains, fossils and Queen Victoria’s castle. We tried the popular Victorian sponge cake, and it did not disappoint. On Sunday we attended a Church of England service with cousins and finished the day off at the New Forest National Park where we saw wild horses!Read more

      Day 18 - Southampton, England

      October 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Southampton today and a sad farewell to Wayne and Karin who are heading home to Newmarket. Busy day on board with staff prepping the ship for the onslaught of new passengers…our steward, Anshul, looked a bit overwhelmed - it looked like we were the only cabin in his row that were staying for the second half of the cruise so he had a lot of work to do. Hopped off the ship and headed into town. We walked by the Mayflower memorial, a memorial to the 1620 pilgrim ships that headed to America. Then we made our way to the Solent Sky as it had been highly recommended by our Aussie friends. It’s a museum dedicated to the history of flying boats and the Spitfire, housing over 20 aircraft from the golden age of aviation. The Solent region was the centre of aviation research and development between 1910 and 1960. Paul enjoyed it, but only managed to take one picture, and had some interesting discussions with one of the volunteers who was impressed with Paul’s knowledge of the airplanes, particularly the engines. We headed back towards the city centre, passing the Church of the Holyrood (known as the church of the sailors) which was erected in 1320, but damaged significantly in 1940. We continued along Blue Anchor Lane, alongside the Tudor house, that in Medieval times, was used to bring up imported goods to the market place and then down by the Southampton town walls. It had been raining on and off all morning so we ducked into the West Quay shopping mall (check out the vending machine for fresh flower arrangements), continuing with my quest to locate one of my favs, The Flying Tiger (glorified Dollar Store) which, I might add, we’ve been successful with in every port so far, except LeHavre. Jacqui, my craftaholic on board, found it today too (I had brought back Santa tissues for the ladies a couple of days ago) and LOVED it…her husband, Malcolm, was less impressed. Stopped in for lunch at Franco Manca where they make their own sourdough pizza crust and source their ingredients from small suppliers across Italy and the UK. Paul ordered a “No Logo Lager” - bit spicy (the pizza, not the Lager), but delicious 😋. Heading back to the ship we popped into Ikea to get out of the rain…same shit, different continent and then into McD’s for a coffee. Dinner and a show (comedian) and then off to bed.Read more

      Day 7 - Southampton - departure…or is it

      October 19, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

well…we did not depart first thing this morning as expected. Weather is still bad and the harbor was still closed. Finally did leave around noon but, unfortunately, the weather played havoc at our first stop, Hamburg, and they’ve cancelled that port. Apparently the storm has pulled the water out of the river and it’s too shallow for the ship to dock. Spent the day eating, wandering around the ship, drinking, ping pong, I took merengue lessons (sans Paul, but I found myself another partner), we won a trivia contest, more to eat, more to drink…I rediscovered mojitos 😋. Our drink package allows us a maximum of 15 drinks per day. Paul’s favorite quote from the cruise director…”15 is a goal, not a limit” 🤣. Sometime during the day the Captain came on the PA to tell us of further changes to the itinerary - Mother Nature simply is not cooperating, but it looks like we’ve traded a day in Hamburg and a day in Aarhus (Denmark) for a port that I think is reasonably close to Amsterdam and if that’s the case and we can get into Amsterdam, I’m stoked!!Read more

      Nach der Radtour

      September 11, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Read more

Radtour "Das Beste von Southampton" 2

      September 11, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Read more

      Southampton

      November 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Left home at 9am and arrived at the port at 11.15am. There was a lot of queueing and checking in before we could board but everyone was very friendly. By 12.45pm we were up on the Lido deck (8) drinking coffee. Completed the check in by watching the safety video and reporting to my muster station. Unpacked and explored the ship. Met Jenny Grey and Tom , they had already been on board for 3 weeks. Went to the welcome session in the gym. met Marilyn at our dinner table.
Watched the Bollette Theatre Company doing Wizard of Oz musical.
