      Durham Cathedral

      July 7, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

      Delightful Durham

      August 24, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Had a relaxing start to the day with A working on his puzzle, and J pacifying Spike with lap cuddles. She's the most vocal cat we've ever heard! Today planned to visit cousins in Wylam mid-afternoon, so decided to make a day of it: a stop and explore Durham on the way.

Our first stop was slightly north of Durham, in Sacriston, to pick up locally roasted coffee from Durham Coffee Roasters! Their industrial warehouse shop is nicely done up. Multiple roasting machines, lounge area, coffee machines and a large selection of coffee! Needing to stock up for a few weeks, we couldn't turn down the deal on three small bags 🛍️

We then returned to Durham to explore the historical downtown area near the Castle and Cathedral. We wandered down High Street and found Durham Gin Distillery, sampling a few of thier products. The staff member was very helpful, including generously offering samples 🤪 we supported local and purchased some delicious spirits to enjoy later 🍸

Eventually found our way over to the Cathedral. The interior was quite spectacular between the gilding, the grandiose pillars, and layers of history. This is a very revered location due to St Cuthbert's shrine and the Venerable Bede's tomb.

Before we left Durham we stopped into a pastry shop to grab treats for tea with the relatives.

We arrived in Wylam just a little passed four. After a quick walk around the garden, we enjoyed a casual visit over tea and pastries in the courtyard ☺️ of their 10th century country home. It was formally a monks summer retreat, but now lives on as a few private dwellings with spectacular gardens.

      Durham

      March 29, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Durham

      April 12, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Durham Cathedral, and some of the city itself, were really neat! Fyi, the cathedral was one of the filming locations for Hogwarts in Harry Potter, in case the cloisters look familiar :P The wooden ceiling in the monks' dormitory (now the cathedral museum) is all original, 14th century.Read more

      Durham Cathedral

      December 26, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

Durham Cathedral is one of the great buildings of Europe. Set grandly on a rocky promontory next to the Castle with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round, the profile of the World Heritage Site is instantly recognizable to people travelling up and down the East Coast Main Line.Read more

    • Day 87

      Durham Meeting Point.

      August 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Well, I forgot about my trip to Durham. Lorna and I meet here as mid wayish from Pockletown and Edinburgh. Not since before YouKnowWhat.

What a pleasant surprise it has lost its run down feel. A few shops still empty. Tesco instead of M&S and lots of new restaurants.

Alas, if you have been on YOU or HappyFeed you will know within half an hour of arriving I got clobbered by a migraine. Boots were lovely and sold me a packet of meds. I'm not sure if they worked or not. Because I felt awful. I managed up the hill and into the cathedral but then it hit good and proper. Sweats, shivers, nausea, bit of head pain. So I spent 45 mins outside with head between my knees. Once the nausea was over I just had the jitters. But a wander and a sit in the Cloister helped.

I couldn't look at the Gaia installation. Such a pity. Made my head reel. But we got into the Chapter room now it's open to public. (Harry Potter location for the fans) and then walked around looking at my favourite windows and the tapestries.

After we sauntered down the hill and found a great spot by the river. I barely managed to eat my scone and drink a cup of tea. The menu was great and we plan out Xmas outing there. I was grateful for the new cosy shawl that I had bought in the cute shop up near the cathedral.

We walked up the river to Prebends Bridge which I hadn't been on since my interview day in 1982. Did not get a place a DUni. Their loss. And I wouldn't have met J... Then back down other side and headed to station.

So despite it all a nice day. Lots of chat. More behind us than in front. Both trying to 'settle' in the positions we find ourselves. And just being friends of nearly 30 years!!! Noooo. Yes. Blimey.
