      New Forest & Wimborne arrival

      June 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

This morning we walked out and had a lovely breakfast at the cabinet rooms of yummy granola and croissant. Then we left the JustaB lodging where the B stands for basement and then set off on the road down to the new forest where we were going to meet Pete and Morgan. We saw lovely rural views and horses and cows and cute donkeys along the way. All went well and the four of us set off for a long forest walk, where Pete knew exactly where we were going for the 8km!!! but the rest of us thought we were lost. Afterwards we went to the Royal Oak pub and had a lovely drink with Ploughman‘s lunch. It was very pleasant sitting outside in the rural area.

After getting to their lovely home, I went for a haircut - very needed - in Wimborne and since then we have been enjoying food, wine and lovely company:).

      Worst day

      June 18, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We set off on Sunday morning from beautiful Horton staying with the Lawton‘s and it was a wonderful time. The evening before we had our final meal with Peter and Morgan at the Museum pub which is located in the town of Farnham. After the nice dinner we had a wonderful walk around the village which had many pretty thatched houses. We drove up to Wells on our way to Bristol Airport and saw another magnificent Cathedral and Bishop’s house. Whilst we were waiting for a fairly awful lunch we got a message that our flight to Bordeaux had been cancelled. An additional pain was that my phone Optus card wasn’t working and still isn’t! Wtf!! We managed to change the flight to Gatwick for the next day. So we set off driving through the rain. Gradually got worse and at one stage we were diverted and then the M3 was actually closed. Traffic was awful through most of the trip. Eventually we arrived and we had trouble returning our car because we had changed the drop off point from Bristol to Gatwick. Then all the hotels were full because of all the flight cancellations. We did get a booking.com for the Marriott. Change of terminal and a long walk later, we finally arrived only to be told that they were full and the booking was for the 19th not the 18th. Wtf again. However the woman serving us was Italian and I cried on purpose and for an extra cost we miraculously got a room.
Next morning now and so far we are on our flight which has been delayed but we should get there.

      Kingston Lacy

      June 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Get together as its best.

      Kingston Lacey beauty

      June 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

This morning after breakfast we first of all had a quick look at the church and other nearby lovely areas to the Lawton’s home. It is a very gorgeous area. Then we set off and drove about 15 minutes away to a magnificent home which is National Trust and called Kingston Lacey. The inside of the building was not only magnificent but all the volunteers were outstanding in giving us excellent detail about all the lovely rooms and about where the art came from and the wealthy Bankes family that owned all this.Read more

Horton Inn or a refuge from drawning

      August 26, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Terrible drive in rain to the very dry Horton Inn.

The Horton is in the middle of nowwhere but is a great palce at a reasonable price.

Originally they only had a twin but the nice people have found us a double with a bathroom the size of the Granny Flat.

We wouldn’t have cared if we slept in the carpark.

The drive from Salisbury was pretty horrendous with a lot of water on the roads and a few fords.

Warm and dry and Mark had a drink straight away.

Bernadette was very brave through the entire experience calling out local flooding and approaching tidalwaves.

      Tomorrow WILL BE DRY.

      Kitchen garden

3 obelisks one of which was shipped from Egypt in the 1850's and took eight years to arrive.
Garden sarcophagus (this is a must on garden redesign plans.

      Quite a place.

      Kingston Lacy House

      August 27, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Excessive drive of 5 miles and we reached a National Trust property called Kingston Lacey.
Built in the Palladian Style think big, straight and very impressive.
Everyone is out and about after yesterday’s rain. Last day of long weekend and lots of caravans going home early to dry off.

Another terrific house, million pounds art collection and 16,000 acres of land. This helps make a National Trust one of UK largest private landowners.

Estate has garden the size of a postcode and extends down to coast including Corfe Castle. (Will see that tomorrow).

      Kingston Lacy

      June 3, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Knowlton church

      August 27, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Take a 2,500 Neolithic henge ( consisting of a roughly circular or oval-shaped bank with an internal ditch surrounding a central flat area of more than 20 m (66 ft) in diameter. There is typically little if any evidence of occupation in a henge, although they may contain ritual structures such as stone circles, timber circles and coves. Wikipedia).
Add a 12th century church extended up to the 18th century when the roof fell in and it’s not a bad start to the day.

      Wimborne Minster Model Village

      August 27, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

So it’s 1951 and you decide to build a 1/10 model of your town.
By the 80’s people don’t see it as the cutting edge of entertainment anymore and it’s pretty well derelict.
They sell the land from underneath you, what do you do?
You get someone rich to give you a field and you move it bit by bit and reopen in 1991. You cut it up with an angle grinder and hope you bring all the bits.
Still not the cutting edge of entertainment but has a certain charm. We liked it.
