Elburton

We have planned six nights in Plymouth and are staying on Furze Farm site, which lies to the east of the city. The site lies on high ground overlooking what would have been open fields but is now a major housing development forming the area of Sherford. The weather for our visit was erratic - warm but with sudden showers intermingled with sunny periods or drizzle. Storms forecast for days 4 and 5.
We cycled into the city each of the first three days - apparently there is a cycling highway into the city from here but we managed to miss the off road route at the beginning only picking it up after a section along the main road. Signage needs some improvement.
Full day 1 was spent wandering arond the historic old part of the city, by the sea front, The Hoe, Barbican and the Victorian waterfront. We wandered over to Stonehouse to check that the Cremyll ferry was operating to Edgecumbe where we planned to do a walk later in the week. Passing the entrance to the commercial docks we noted the Pont Aven in dock preparing to sail to northern Spain - there were a lot of caravans and cars in the line ready to be loaded but the ship was clearly not going to be busy.
On day 2 we had a look around the city centre in late morning and in the afternoon spent 2 hours on a guided historical walking tour. We started off at the Barbican adjacent to the ceremonial monument marking the Mayflower which set sail 400 years ago. The big anniversary celebrations have all had to be cancelled this year. The Barbican was busy with tourists and is a vibrant waterfront. We enjoyed the tour and James our guide regaled us with stories of derring do as we wandered past the places of significant historical interest.
On day 3 we cycled in the rain showers to the Cremyll ferry where we crossed over to Mount Edgcumbe by which time the weather was improving . We enjoyed a long walk around the estate following the coastal path to Kingsland then back over the headland - very hilly walk in lovely parkland, woods and on quiet roadways - 6 miles plus deviations due to land falls and fallen trees. K claimed to be weary on the cycle home but charged up the hills no problem.Read more
