Cows on the road, cows on the beach!

Up bright and early for our drive to Elgol. Having read reviews, guide books and listened to advice from our hosts, we were somewhat prepared for the 15 miles of single-track road to the very tiny harbour of Elgol. However, the consensus was that the views of the Cullian mountain range, and the boat trip with the MacKinnons was worth it. The reality was hold-your-breath-there's-someone-coming! There really weren't that many cars, but there were a lot of cows and sheep next to or on the road, blind corners, narrow bridges and cattle guards, and a few locals and/or ignorant tourists who didn't know or didn't care.

But that done, we arrived and boarded the boat to take us to Loch Coruisk. Finn was our first mate, and could not have been more enthusiastic. He entertained us with stories of his ancestor rescuing and hiding Bonnie Prince Charlie in a cave on the inlet. We hiked a bit along the loch, enjoying yet another beautiful day, then readied ourselves for the return drive.

At lunchtime, we stopped for an excellent lunch at Creelers in Broadford. We noticed a baby being walked in a beautiful old-fashioned pram, and we were delighted when the baby spontaneously began to wave at us. Later, in a jewelry shop, we discovered that the baby was the owner's 16 month old daughter, being walked by Granny (young looking granny!).Read more

Day 6
Isle of Skye - der Süden

Der Tag begann mit einem Frühstück im Auto wegen starken Regens und fehlender überdachter Kochmöglichkeit auf dem Campingplatz.
Danach sind wir dann losgefahren Richtung Süden, um eine Wanderung entlang der Küste zu machen. Und unser Optimismus wurde (mal wieder) belohnt: nachdem wir zur Wanderung aufgebrochen sind stoppte der Regen und zeitweise kam sogar die Sonne raus!

Auf der Straße haben hier übrigens die Tiere das sagen. Und so kann es schonmal passieren, dass eine Kuh die Priorität auf das Füttern ihres hungrigen Kälbchens setzt und dafür auch gerne fünf Autos warten lässt, die auch über die einspurige Brücke wollen 🙈🐮Read more

Elgol

Rob made it to the tent without getting wet but couldn’t get to sleep straight away because the wind and rain intensified, shaking the tent quite violently. It wasn’t that Rob was worried he’d be blown away and end up in the river, but the noise of the fabric shaking. So he decided to check the weather forecast for the next few days only to find it was wall to wall showers and cooling temperatures. The decision therefore was to move-on and head to Northumberland, which was always the intention, and to fit that in Rob would have to leave soon in any case. Eventually he fell asleep and the next thing he knew it was time to get up - to find a nice anti-Midge breeze and the hint of some sunshine. During breakfast however the first of the showers blew through ... definitely time to leave.

Having sorted another coffee and a couple of ginger nut biscuits, Rob looked at the route to get to Northumberland and where he might stay when there. He certainly fancied B&B that night simply to take a shower at leisure, rather than hurriedly finishing up before he got too cold which is the joy of the loo block on a camp site! Pitlochry was chosen for the overnight stay and options considered for the weekend. Then, having taken-down the tent and packed everything away, he began the 160 mile drive ... Scotland is bigger than you think.

On the way to the bridge to the mainland is the turning to Elgol, which is a bit of an iconic photo location, so even though the weather and lighting wasn’t brilliant, Rob decided to drive the 15 miles to go and take a look and it was well worth the detour. Rob took some photos en-route and also after a lunch snack at a really nice shop/cafe in Elgol, at the top of the hill just up from the public conveniences. You get the idea from the phone photos in this footprint ... not about the public loos, but about Elgol and the kind of view you get toward the Cuillins across the water.Read more

Traveler Excellent images taken here, quite serious ones too! All very dramatic and moody. I think I like the original version of the two you offer for consideration although the cropped version is good as well. It was obviously well worth the detour, thank you for sharing these images with us. If you have time, the "Dam and Fish ladder" is worth a visit in Pitlochry. (It added a new term to our limited swearing vocabulary too). We only had a short time in the town but liked it very much.

Traveler “Damn and fish ladder”, I exclaimed in frustration, “I’m not sure if I have time to do that before I leave.” Yes, it works doesn’t it. To be honest, I visited there many years ago. Didn’t see any salmon and no ladder either, except a series of pool-like things made of concrete. ;-). Seriously though, it was interesting.
