    • Day 12

      Glasgow

      September 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We had a quick visit to Glasgow on the way north, and found some really good things to see.

We walked the attractive Kelvingrove Park (admittedly in the rain), then caught the cute little Glasgow Subway - with carriages so small you wonder how all the people will fit - to the city centre.

George Square, with statues of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert mounted in twin equestrian poses at one end, and a pantheon of famous Scots at the other, is a magnificent civic space.

Just down the street was the Gallery of Modern Art, mostly famous because the Glasgwegians insist on keeping a traffic cone on the head of the statue of the Duke of Wellington that sits outside, a long-standing tradition.

From there we went to the Clyde River, where we visited the Riverside Museum, full of interesting things (from locomotives to fashions and a lot in between) and interesting stories of the social impact of many of them.

Outside the museum is the tall ship Glenlee, steel hulled and built on the Clyde in 1896.

Our final stop - other than a few pints and a curry for dinner - was the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Housed in a stunning building dating from 1900, we barely skimmed the collection. There were paintings by Rembrandt and Monet, to name just two diverse geniuses, along with Scottish masterpieces and installations galore.

That was just the top floor. The eclectic collection on the ground floor included a hall full of life-sized stuffed animals apparently being strafed by a Spitfire hung from the ceiling.

We felt like we packed a lot into our single day in Glasgow; after a well-earned rest we are now getting lost on the motorway system en route to the Isle of Skye.

      Friday 11th August

      August 11, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This is me 😂 on my way back from the Banksy exhibition in Glasgow then to the library to update find penguins onto Hairmyers hospital where Aunt Margaret is being assessed for a home care package. So she'll be in hospital at least for the weekend. Then off to Blantyre via bus to Hamilton. The driver let me off to catch another bus but I decided to make that sentimental journey on foot.

The Banksy exhibition was stunning. I think it was almost autobiographical without saying it. Isn't that just Banksy tho! We aren't allowed to take photos but people walked around taking instant ones...I felt so blessed!

I walked from High Blantyre down through Burnbank to Blantyre. Walked down through our public park which is very changed. I reached the home where our grannie and grandpa lived at knights wood terrace it's still there. I climbed the stairs and knocked on the door hoping to chat to the new owners. No reply, so sadly walked back down to the wash room and back yard, remembering all the days the steam would be rising from those disused monuments to a time gone by.

So many changes since we were last here. I walked across the road to the station and, now on a train back to Glasgow to then catch a sub back to Kelvin bridge. A wonderful day, inspired by Banksy's work and off to Dundee tomorrow to see my friends. 😊

      Off to Dundee

      August 12, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

HAPPY BIRTHDAY oor Megs hen, oor gorgeous baby sister, hope it's been a great day and wishing you so much fun, laughter, joy, peace and exotic adventures, with love always xxoo❤️💜💖

Setting my sights on Dundee today I bought my all day ticket yesterday to avoid the queues! Glasgow was packed as I think this was the last day of the World Cycle championships in this great city. I said cheerio to the hostel a little nostalgic, and to "Paul", who sat under a huge statue at the top of the park, an alcoholic young man with whom I'd stop to talk to each day on my way either down from the hostel or on my way back up. He had a great boomy voice which scared people off, but a lovely soul, it made me sad to see him so "under the weather".

An obstacle course on the way down through Kelvin Grove Park, as the roads were cut off for the race, made the going a bit tough, but, again, helpful people took my suitcase and grocery bag for me and helped me down the track! I think it's probably time I accept my limitations and make better arrangements like, get a taxi??

The road was even more difficult as new tarmac had been layed to quite a depth at the side of the road which then dropped down into mud!! Eeeek!! Successfully down through the park, I was on my way to the subway and on into Glasgow. One last tourist thing to do was go back to the Glasgow gallery of modern art... And found a wonderful womens exhibition
Just the thing! Then to Queen Street station to catch the train at 12.11 pm. After an hour and forty minutes, Ann, my dear friend, was there to meet me and take me home to her gorgeous home in Dundee.

It is lovely to be so welcomed and rest in a home.

    • Day 36

      Glasgow

      August 15, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

      Goedemorgen!

    • Day 31

Lots of Lochs then Glasgow Gallivanting

      May 27, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Zoe and Sean had warned us last night that this could be a busy weekend as it was a public holiday on Monday, so we decided to head off earlyish (8.15am) for our tour of the Lochs and southern highlands north and west of Glasgow.
The closest (and largest) of the lochs is Loch Lomond, and we followed this up it’s western flank for quite a way before branching off to follow a valley up to the ‘Rest and Be Thankful’ pass. We stopped at the viewing area for some morning tea before heading on past some other lochs and quaint towns such as Inverary.
We arrived at the Chrauchan power station on the banks of Loch Awe with the intention of doing a tour of this rather amazing piece of engineering (a hydro power station 1 km underground).
We, along with a number of other potential tourists were disappointed to see the sign at their closed facility indicating that tours during their high, summer season run every day- except on weekends!
So we sat in the carpark for a few minutes and watched a YouTube video on the power station instead.
The weather was exactly what you might expect of the Scottish highlands- cool, a little breezy, some showers and mist, not the fine weather that the forecast had promised.
We circled back towards Glasgow via a different route, stopping at Kilchurn castle and then back down the full length of Loch Lomond.
We found a nice spot by the edge of the lake to sit in the car and have some lunch.
Here I also took the opportunity to serenade Loss with a solo rendition of the old Scottish song ‘On the Bonnie, Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond’, which she seemed to enjoy immensely (even though she claims she had never heard the song before).
We could see the ‘steep sides of Ben Lomond’ and the highland hills bathed ‘in soft purple hue’ and as my dulcet tones rang out across the loch, my only disappointment was that it wasn’t recorded.
Apart from my splendid singing, it was also a beautiful spot to have lunch.

Fortunately we were on our way back to Glasgow and the traffic was quite light in our direction, but as predicted it was heavy heading the other way.
We saw a number of hardy Scottish souls camping by the banks of the lochs - even a few swimming in the rather frigid water. Apart from a few kayaks and SUP’s, there was very minimal boating activity observed.
We got back to Glasgow at about 3.30pm. In all, we passed by at least half a dozen different lochs of varying shapes and sizes.

Fortified by a coffee at the apartment, we then set off at 4pm to explore Glasgow itself. Cars are very much discouraged within the city precincts, so we decided to do another hop on / off bus tour which worked out well.
We walked 20 minutes to the nearest pickup point, did a full lap (and a half) of the city to eventually alight at the University. There were a number of points of interest including a big celebration by Celtic soccer fans with noise, colour (green and white), flares and police out in force.
We walked into the university and found the quite famous cloisters area, headed out to the front of the University which gave a nice view down over the city, and then armed with some extra ‘local info’ from Zoe also found Ashton Place which is a great little restaurant precinct not far away. We probably would have stayed there for dinner but it was getting quite cold out now (although most of the Scots were in short and T-shirts) and we had already bought groceries earlier, so we walked the 25 minutes back to the warmth of our unit - arriving right at 7pm - to enjoy dinner at home and an early night, hopefully.

    • Day 2

      Glasgow #Day2

      August 13, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      E ora?
Cena, pub e letto direi 😛

      Kirche in Glasgow

      September 16, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    • Day 69

      Glasgow

      July 13, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
