      York - Howard Castle

      May 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

A bit more of York. We travelled 30 minutes outside of town to see Howard Castle. Nicely kept up castle. Very large. At one time the only private home in the UK with it‘s own dome - - yes, like a capitol building. Numerous fires over the years including one that destroyed the dome - since rebuilt although there are still rooms waiting to be refurbished from the fire many years ago. Grounds are extensive, but not ornate or really spectacular. At th3 gift shop Gail saw a ~10 year old girl admiring a plush peacock. The girl asked her parents about purchasing it, so Gail did and gave it to her. They hugged and Gail got many thanks from the parents. Unfortunately I didn‘t have the presence of mind to snap a pic of the hug.Read more

    • Day 6 - Castle Howard

      September 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We had to include one of England's palaces in our itinerary, and Castle Howard was our choice. This magnificent palace has been in the Howard family for 300 years. When we arrived, a thick fog blanketed the area, but that didn't deter us from exploring its elegant interior in the morning.

The estate's grounds were equally enchanting, offering us the opportunity to hike through fields, woods, and around several lakes. Our journey eventually led us to a meticulously maintained garden, adding to the tranquility of the day. Of course, we couldn't resist our customary morning tea and snack, often indulging in scones with clotted cream or marmalade. It was a truly relaxing day.

Note: Our photos are coming from a variety if sources. At the end of each day, everyone goes through their photos and nominate ones for the blog.

      Castle Howard Gardens

      August 10, 2018 in England ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Because Mark is an idiot we have never been here before despite driving almost by the front gate several occasions in the past.
      What a great place.
Ancestral home of the Howard family, it’s been through some ups and downs since building started in in 1702. Had the almost obligatory country house fire in 1944 and parts are still not renovated.

Huge place designed by John Vanbrugh who also planned Blenheim Palace.
Good only to work on big things. You can see the similarities between the two although the guide suggested this was a more “domestic “ set of buildings! If by domestic you mean the size of a city block.

Has the biggest family mausoleum in Northern Europe with spaces for 67 and a restoration bill of over 17million pounds. Death is not cheap.

Had sun, rain, wind during the day, a real Yorkshire day.

Of course has a couple of Follies; The Temple of The Four Winds, an obelisk the size of Sydney Tower, a pyramid a little smaller than Giza and a fountain called Atlas. Unfortunately he’s not working as the water levels are low due to the lack of rain.

Will just have to come back to see.

      Castle Howard (Ghost Writer)

      May 26, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Before we hit the Lake District and the beautiful scenery it was time for one more castle, Castle Howard. Since everyone is basically related over here, well at least the royals, it’s not a surprise that the 4th Duke of Norfolk’s blood line from Arundel runs into Castle Howard. This location was a little different, they didn’t have the audio guides that we’ve become accustomed to that gives you so much detail and history, but that doesn’t mean the castle and grounds were any less impressive. Built in the early 1700’s, Castle Howard was thought of as a country house- eye roll- a big country house and was known for the unique central dome above the grand hall. The house has been in the same family for over 300 years, but has been a boys boarding school, a girls boarding school, a war hospital as well as a family residence. In 1940, while a boarding school, a huge fire gutted more than half of the castle. The dome in the main hall crashed to the floor and was almost not replaced. Some 20 yrs later, the dome was rebuilt and the inside rooms devastated by the fire were partially furnished and used in a TV show and a movie, called Brideshead and Brideshead Revisted. We didn’t have a chance to peruse the gardens or grounds as much as Burghley House, but having a chance to tour another magnificent home was well worth the detour from York to fit it in. Check off 6 castles, palaces, or country manors in 4 days! On to the Scottish castles next!Read more
