      Los geht's....

      September 29 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Read more

      Mildura to Heathrow

      September 29 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Other than flying planes for the last 24 hours there isn’t a whole lot to report! But after flying to Vietnam with the family, flying with just the two of us was so much smoother! Sorry kids 😂

      Eli has been trying so hard for the last few months to put in a request to upgrade to business class for the two long flights using points. He’s made multiple phone calls to Qantas trying to make it happen and getting frustrated as they kept stuffing it up from an admin point of view. But he surprised me with the tickets when we checked in at Mildura with the last leg of our journey from Singapore to Heathrow (14 hours) being upgraded to business class. I was so excited to be able to lay down for the flight as it’s overnight. I’ve always dreaded long flights for that reason, trying to sleep is so uncomfortable sitting up and having short legs!

      We were able to enjoy the qantas lounge while we were in Melbourne which was fancy - free food, drinks and somewhere comfy to relax between flights!

      The flight to Singapore was uneventful. Being in the aisle seat I managed to get up now and again and stretch my legs. Eli was feeling a bit squished being in a middle seat so was quite looking forward to the next leg.

      We came off the plane in Singapore and walked straight onto the next plane. And boy, business class is something else. Your own personal space, pod, whatever you want to call it with plenty of leg room and bench to put your things and your own overhead locker area. And my favourite part - you could fully recline your seat to lay down - forget the fancier food, extra service, lounge area and free snacks - this was absolute bliss and changes the whole overnight flying experience. We actually got off the plane feeling refreshed instead of bleary eyed and trying to walk straight 😂

      But….clearly things had been going too well for us and something had to go wrong. My suitcase didn’t turn up 😩 so we had to put a request in for it to be delivered to our address tomorrow. It better be delivered - it would be hard enough trying to shop for new outfits normally, let alone when you’re pregnant and getting whale sized 🙄

      We’re finally out of the airport and organising our hire car for the next few days, then on to Oxford ☺️

      Goodbye London

      October 1, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Today has been a funny day. it was a day we did not expect. Due to strike action, we can not get a Tube out to Heathrow and so have booked an Uber driver, Gabor, to take us out there at 3.30pm. We've got a night at the Hilton and will have to be at Terminal 3 tomorrow morning about 5ish.

      So, today was a take it easy day. Not too much energy. Check out of the hotel at midday, ask them to look after our bags until 3.30 when Gabor arrives.

      In the morning, it was out for a proper brekky, which frankly, surprised us both. Mostly, we've just been having coffee and a plain croissant, or Chris, a pain au chocolat. But today, we wanted eggs. We walked a bit trying to find something nice, aside from the franchises, and eventually happened upon Dolci, a small affair, run by hot baristas and a wonderfully personable female waiter, and whose internal wall is covered in blooms with some neon signs. We both had eggs how we like them, mine, I must say, was an objet d'art, the way it looked in its rasberry-coloured bearnaise sauce. The coffees, probably the best we've had in the UK. So, thank you Dolci, Earl's Court Road.

      After brekky, a stroll though Holland Park. Lots of people enjoying themselves, either walking, riding, chatting, sitting or playing sport out on the field. Back to the Hotel to have a nap, which surprisingly, we both fell into immediately. I think it shows how tired we are.

      Then, after checkout, a Tube to Victoria Station where we had chips and a beer and watched the people below in their hundreds navigate the train system in the middle of the strike action.

      Then back to the Hotel where Gabor picked us up and drove us through a nasty traffic snarl that added on at least twenty minutes to the journey. We tipped him of course. Stupidly, I allowed my phone to slip from my leg onto the floor and Gabor drove off with it. After contacting him via the Uber app, he had to navigate the traffic and dropped it back to me out the front of the Hotel. He didn't want to take it, but I tipped him a second time.

      So here we are. In the Hilton Hotel at Heathrow, sitting in their bar, having a beer, awaiting some food, and processing that this trip is now all over.

      A few things for those interested. I had always put off coming to Europe in my 30s because I was then still single, not out, lonely and had always thought that when the time came, I would come here with someone special rather than doing it by myself. In this trip, that set of thoughts and the rationale behind them has come true and become real. Chris is with me, we have seen places and had experiences that we never dreamed possible for us, and we're still talking. Actually, Chris and I travel very well together. As in life, so on holiday.

      Some miscellaneous thoughts:
      * the arrows on the road pointing back to the other side seem to me to be pretty useless or ignored;
      * crossing large intersections in the car, there are no lane markings as you go around, so it's a bit of a free for all;
      * I still haven't worked out where to walk having tried the left and the right to no apparent joy;
      * people queueing at an intersection waiting for the little green man always go before the green man appears (a sixth sense?);
      * this sceptered isle is full of vaping shops and barbers;
      * kids are vaping as a way to look cool in the way we smoked in my day to look cool;
      * there is still a lot of smoking in the UK and it's pretty easy to cop a lung full just by walking down the street;
      * driving in cities in a rental is not my idea of fun; * driving in Surrey and West Sussex where the roads are narrow and all the locals are cock-sure is not my idea of fun;
      * I've enjoyed local lagers wherever we have gone;
      * the UK is drowning in franchises, not as many indpendent businesses as in Australia;
      * I've never seen so many pubs in my life as in the UK - you only have to look up and there's a pub.

      It's been a big thing for me. I feel very much at home in the UK. In many ways, it feels like coming home. Having grown up on British tv and music, and having the Westminster system of responsible government, this place does not feel foreign to me. Scotland has a wonderful sensibility that I want to see and experience again. Regional cities have their own personalities that are quite apparent. And London. Well, London has an energy that is magical.

      I will never forget this wonderful trip and I hope to relive many of the memories as I re-read this blog in the coming years. And to you who have come along for the ride, I thank you and hope that you enjoyed it.

      Leaving UK flying home to NZ family

      September 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      Well folks that's it...my big adventure almost over with just 30 hours til I touch down in NZ.

      It has been an amazing experience and I'm going home to reflect, write and keep in touch. I was so glad I'd taken my big suitcase out to the airport yesterday, as there was no train from the station at Barons Court today. They are working on the lines so that meant a big walk this afternoon into Hammersmith with 9 kilos on my back and three in a carry all!!

      There I caught the bus to Osterley which got caught in Traffic, and took a bit longer adding to concrn that we wouldn't name it in time to collect my suitcase from left luggage. As I walked I gave myself a good talking to. The worst that could happen would be paying for extra time!! So my heart rate under control with my 7/4/8 breathing, I slowed down and gave myself a good pat on the back for taking care of myself.

      Then it was down a ramp under the road and up another ramp to Osterley station to catch the underground to Heathrow...right into the terminal. It's amazing!! We're away ...cheerie for now xxx❤️‍🩹💖💕💕 ps ..sunrise near Doha photo and boarding passes, and done if the route it was an easy journey ...

      Heathrow Airport

      August 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Our holiday is winding up. We had a late check out (midday) of our Tower Hill motel. We were well organised and had time (and presence of mind) for a Memorial service before we left.

      My back has been playing up again, and Ian decided the cab to Heathrow was worth the expense. Sunday morning is a relatively good time to travel as far as traffic goes, and we had a peaceful drive through London. We passed Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey and a few other landmarks we would not have seen on the Tube.

      We are now at the Heathrow airport motel ready for an early flight tomorrow morning. The photo is the view from our room. On the right you can see the connecting tunnel to the Terminal, a 2 minute walk so no need for a shuttle. We've weighed our bags and they are under weight so hopefully no dramas tomorrow.

      Our motel is a 3-4 star budget one, and we decided to eat at the Crowne restaurant next door. Mine was tastier than it looks! Spinach and paneer curry. Yum. Ian had Nasi Goreng. Soon I will be back to having to cook 😒 but on the other hand it will be good to eat normally again. I miss my spinach and banana smoothies!

      Halifax to London Heathrow

      May 15 in England ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

      I made it to London! Smooth sailing all the way. Going through Customs was a breeze - just scanned my passport and off to pick up my bag. It's a humongous airport!
      The sun had just set as we landed around 9 pm. Gave me a chance to glimpse the surroundings from the air. Can't wait to see it from the ground in the morning.
      After taking my bags up to my room, I went down to the hotel pub for a snack and glass of vino. It's only 6:35 pm Atlantic time and I'm just not ready for bed yet. I did find out that here you only tip if you want to . . . it's not expected. Wish I'd known that with the taxi; the fare was £15 and I gave him a £7 tip. He gushed about how nice Canadians are.
      Tomorrow, I'll return to Heathrow to take an express train to Paddington station, then take another one to Bristol.
      Fun fact: they call the ground floor of a building Floor 0.

      It's Heathrow again

      October 19, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Die Fahrt zum Flughafen bot jedes Wetter das wir diese Woche erlebt haben - also eine gute Zusammenfassung😜
      Alles ist bisher pünktlich und gut abgelaufen , wenn man von den einzelnen Schülern absieht, die es nach der 3. Erinnerung und Erklärung noch immer nicht schaffen Deodorants oder Ähnliches nicht im Handgepäck zu haben ... aber was soll’s, wir sind ja schließlich nicht auf Urlaub 😜
      Wenn man die Schlagzeilen sämtlicher bekannter Tageszeiten hier heute liest, dann wollen eigentlich alle, dass Mr. Johnson heute seinen Deal durchbringt!?

Und die flughafenmitarbeiter lachen über die Leute mit Mundschutz.Nur 2 Shops haben offen wo Security vor steht aber die achten nicht wirklich darauf das Abstand gehalten wird.Read more
