      Haworth: Bronte Parsonage

      August 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The weather was much brighter today. The original plan had been to ride on the iconic Skipton-Settle-Carlisle railway to Appleby and back. Alas there was industrial action this week with many trains cancelled, and while we could have found a train out, there was no guarantee we'd get one home. 😕

I felt very disappointed, as the railway was one of the reasons I chose this bnb near the railway line. We didn't want to waste this wonderful weather. Drove to the Bronte parsonage museum in Haworth just to get us out of the house.

The day exceeded my expectations. There was much more at Haworth than the parsonage. There was a whole cobbled street full of interesting shops. I finally encountered a patchwork quilt, and I got to have a tinkle on a pipe organ!

      East Riddlesden Hall

      July 31, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Today started off slowly and we didn't feel in the mood to do anything too adventurous. First job was to go into the next village (Skipton) and find a raincoat. I didn't pack one as I thought it was meant to be summer here! It's going to be rainy all week and Ian doesn't want me to catch my death of cold.
Then we drove to East Riddlesden Hall which is only 10 minutes away from where we're staying. It's a manor house now owned by the National Trust. Wuthering Heights was filmed there apparently. Lots of old furnishings and beautiful hand crafted items. We had lunch in the Cafe (upstairs in the old barn) which was delicious.

Bingley Rise Locks /East Riddlesden Hall

      August 19, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

We stop at Bingley Rise Locks along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal; these comprise two sets of locks to manage the hill here.

Bingley Five Rise Locks are now Grade I listed and are the steepest staircase locks on the longest canal in the UK. They were opened in 1774 and were a major feat of engineering at the time; the five locks are still managed by six gates. Bingley Rise Three Locks are a little further down the towpath.

Nearby is East Riddlesden Hall, a historic 17th century Manor House now managed by the National Trust. It was rebuilt by James Murgatroyd, a wealthy clothier from Halifax, in 1642 and overlooks a bend on the River Aire as it wends its way to Keighley

We explore the house and small gardens to complete two pleasant excursions at the end of our Yorkshire holiday.

Out and about in West Yorkshire

      October 1, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

It's Sunday today and I'm determined to have a last Sunday lunch in England. It's a bit of a gloomy day to start with, but had started to brighten up by the time we got ourselves ready to go.

First stop was the Bingley Five Locks a series of locks on one of the canals. We've seen these before but they never fail to entertain. Funniest thing was one of the boats going down was someone we'd meet in Wales. They'd been on their boat for six months. That would be really testing the friendship!

Then on to Saltaire Village. One of the most perfectly preserved Victorian villages. All built by one family for their Salt Mill. Factory, mill, church, school, hall, hospital and enough houses for 3000 people.

I thought we could drive over the Yorkshire moors from here, but it turns out they are about two hours away and we couldn't be naffed driving that far. Luckily there is Ilkley Moor and Rombald's Moor both of which are only a few miles away. On the way though we passed through Burley in Wharfedale and saw the Red Lion Pub which looked promising, so I got my delicious roast lunch and a bonus of Jam Roly Poly for desert.

Finally dragged our full bellies away and found the Cow and Calf a very windy mountain top on the Ilkley Moor, and then Rombald's, a heather and bog moorland at the end of a windy steep road!

      Haworth, where Gordon learns something.

      May 24, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It seems my government school education may not have been complete. Around the 1800s Patrick and Alice Bronte had six kids while he also pumped out sermons to deliver as vicar of the church next door.

Turns out that literally on the dining table in the next room Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were pumping out absolute literary classics of the English language: Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

No literary seclusion for them though. Along the way they buried three siblings and their mother. In the end Dad Patrick outlived his wife and ALL SIX of his kids.
What a life in Haworth, this little corner of Yorkshire. I'm learning....

A pit stop in Rotterdam ahead of a choppy overnight ferry ride on the Pride of Hull back to English soil.

Rain, cloud and a drive up the M62 to end the trip! Finally reunited with Lennon … (he was pleased to see us honest!)

      Home sweet home.

      Man of the Canals

      September 8, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Here's a challenge: as we descend the Bank Newton locks, one of the boats gets jammed in the lock gates and the other boat becomes wedged to it. As the lock starts to empty, one boat tilts at a sickening angle and is danger of filling with water. Hurriedly we start to refill the lock again, while the guys still aboard rock them like a seesaw to try and free them. Eventually there is an almighty crash and the boats right themselves. Thankfully there's no injury but it's a cautionary tale, not helped by the fact that some of the canal authorities knew this lock was defected and had neglected to broadcast this. The picture shows a distant view of yours truly, obeying orders.

Tradition has it that on the final afternoon the Man of the Canals awards take place. This is a largely ironic procedure in which people get nominations for selected categories. The Best Dressed Man was the guy for wearing clean clothes daily (until the dousing at Bank Newton) and Worst Driver was your narrator who, while waiting downstream for a lock to empty, steered the boat right up to the lock gates, positioning it at right-angles to the canal and so blocking the boat that was trying to leave. We then tot up the marks and award the Man of the Canals to the guy with the highest total (Roger, for organising the trip, among other things). There's a Boy of the Canals and the Third Man, for which the trophy is a musical box playing the theme tune from the film of the same name. As a friend of mine queried: "How old are you?" We're all old enough for our bus passes but with a mental age of about 10!

I've decided that after over 25 years, this will be my final canal trip. It's been a great ride but as one door closes.........
