Day 32July 5 in the United Kingdom
Packed up early and took an Uber to Gare Nord to catch the 12.15 train to London. The station was chaotic with delays galore and after standing in queues for ages we found our train had been cancelled and we needed to rush to another queue to try to reschedule to another time. Finally we got the last 7 tickets all over the place for the 6.15 train. This meant we had to find lockers to store our bags and try to amuse ourselves and particularly the children for 6 hours.
We also realised we would have to try and get our hire car available when we arrived in London. We found out that the car rental office closes at 6pm and we had no hope of being there. We then tried for a couple of hours to contact them without success, eventually Ross rang to say “where are you” as he was waiting to see us at the train station in London. Fortunately Ross was able to go to the car rental office and negotiate an after hours fee to be available when our train arrived.
We returned to the station around 5pm to find people everywhere still, we managed to get our bags and eventually get through customs to an absolutely chaotic waiting area with probably a couple thousand others, as all trains were delayed by 2 hours. Our train was third in line, we had no seats so had to sit for several hours on our cases. The train after ours was also cancelled which for a time reduced the crowds slightly. We than realised that we had no hope of reaching the car rental office at the time we had agreed to and again could not contact them. After we finally boarded our train at around 8.30pm we received a phone call from the car rental office asking where we were. We were able to negotiate for him to return to his office after the train arrives in London for double the original fee.
We had quite a pleasant trip in the train although we were unable to sit together. Once we arrived we raced to find the car rental office before the guy left us with no cars and therefore no bed for the night.
We finally got our cars and negotiated our way out of London to Lower Swell arriving about 1.30 am extremely exhausted.Read more
