Meandering around London

This morning we headed out fairly early to make the most of what was to be a mostly sunny day. We headed to the underground to make our way back down to the Thames, and got off at Mansion House Station. We were too early for our tour of the Globe Theatre, so we made our way up to St. Paul’s Cathedral - which is quite impressive in terms of size and sound of the bells chiming.
We then headed across the Thames via the Millennium Bridge, and went for a walk up to the Borough Market at Southwark, but unfortunately it wasn’t open on Sunday. On the way we saw Ray Martin being interviewed, further along we passed the Clink, an old prison which is now a museum. It operated from the 12th century until 1780. Next to the Clink prison are the ruins of the Winchester Palace - the ruins are all that remain of the palace of the powerful Bishops of Winchester, one of the largest and most important buildings in Medieval London. We also passed a replica of the Golden Hinde, the first English ship to circumnavigate the globe between 1577 - 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. We pottered around the area and explored the narrow streets and alleyways, and came across a lovely little coffee shop called The Gentlemen Baristas (really just slightly bigger than a hole in the wall) where we had the best coffee I have had so far this trip, It was delicious.Read more

Zurück im Hotel und der restliche Abend

Von The Shard aus treten wir den Rückweg zum Hotel an. Schließlich sind wir heute schon seit 4 Uhr auf den Beinen. Wir fahren also mit der Northern Line von London Bridge aus nach Bank und steigen dort um in die DistrctLine Richtung Kensington/Olympia. Da sich die DistrctLine nochmal gabelt müssen wir wieder an Earl's Court aussteigen und in eine DistrctLine in Richtung Wimbledon umsteigen, um dann East Putney aussteigen zu können und die letzten Meter zu Fuß zu gehen.

Angekommen im Hotel müssen wir nur noch unseren Zimmerschlüssel abholen und dann geht es treppauf. Zimmer 53 ist unser. Zum Glück wartet hier auch unser Koffer schon auf uns. Das Zimmer gliedert sich in einen Schlafbereich und einen Wohnbereich und hat ein schönes Bad.

Wir sind sehr zufrieden und positiv überrascht. Auch unser Abendessen, das wir nicht der Einfachheit halber im Hotel genießen, ist gut gelungen.Read more

Heute früh ging’s als erstes zum Buckingham Palace! Von dort aus sind wir dann einmal quer durch den Green Park zur Picadilly Circus Station gelaufen und haben uns dort etwas genauer umgesehen bevor wir uns dann letztendlich wieder auf der Oxford Street befanden und von dort aus nach Hause fuhren🚇Read more

More Sightseeing, Some by Accident

Started early to St. Paul’s Cathedral. I climbed to the top which made the day end with 27 flights of stairs on my iPhone app. Legs are protesting. The Cathedral was allowed to include styles from all around Europe - France and Italy in particular - which made this Non-Catholic church incredibly beautiful.

One of the best parts was that they don’t allow photos inside. It made the experience completely different. Everyone could focus and look instead of searching for that great shot. In the museums, people run around taking photos and not even looking at the work.

I walked across the Thames on the pedestrian bridge to the Tate Modern. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, my ticket for the Van Gogh exhibition was at the Tate Britain. I hopped on the riverboat bus/ferry with its amazing city views.

Van Gogh paintings sound a deep and emotional response in me. The energy, color, texture, enervates my spirit. The exhibit was packed, but I was able to absorb it. I found a yellow Van Gogh tote bag to replace my Rome leather knock-off bag which is falling apart. Now I can carry his painting around with me every day.

After the museum, I needed to stretch my legs so I walked over to the House of Parliament and bumped into the climate change demonstration - one of the five sites they have across London. It was peaceful with lots of police and people who have glued themselves to the pavement. The woman I spoke with seemed determined and somewhat hopeful that they could make a difference.

I took the Underground to a gin tasting place that was sadly closed even though the website said they would be opened. Instead I went to a bar around the corner from my hotel that had decent reviews. I at least wanted to get a couple of G&Ts on my London journey. Mission Accomplished! Good tonic. Delicious gin. Although Aviation in Portland is as good. Too bad the bar I started at served me a raw burger. It had a gorgeously seared outside and lukewarm inside. It was free. I went to another spot nearby and had another yummy drink. Met up with Sue at The Tate Modern to view the exhibition, then a very interesting walk which included gardens, past the law courts, and St Paul’s Cathedral
