      Beaches in South East England

      September 30, 2017 in England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

A relaxed start to the day, decided to meander along the coastline to Whitstable, Recluver, and Margate enjoying the sun and beaches. Loved the beach huts at Whitstable, it was so quiet on the beach front, and you didn't have to pay for parking. We also dropped into Whitstable Castle which was a private residence for the Pearson family in the late 1790’s. I love the black flint stone in the castle tower.
We went on to Recluver to visit the ruins of the Roman Fort of Regulbium that was occupied around 200AD. St Mary's Church was built within the Fort around the 7th Century. Only the western towers remain, which are a landmark for the shipping channel. It was a little disconcerting climbing up the steps within the towers when you see the mortar holding it together is just a sandy mix and a lot of the mix has eroded away.
Margate is a larger coastal town, we parked on the pier hoping to have fish and chips for lunch. As we walked along the pier looking for lunch we both clamped our fingers over our noses. It was low tide and the smell coming from the low tide mark was a smell of acrid ammonia, like someone was being covered in perming solution, it was hard to get the smell out of your nose. Supposedly it is from the seaweed. We did manage to have a nice lunch in The Hoy Pub away from the awful smell.

      Walking with the Vikings

      June 7, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

East Kent has a long history of attempted (Julius Caesar, Napoleon) and successful (Claudius, the Anglo-Saxons) invasions. As the Loop bus ambles, Margate is about 5 miles from Ramsgate. On the Viking Coastal Trail it's twice that but being almost flat and paved throughout, it's an excellent day out. The weather is almost Mediterranean and with the excellent quality of the sand, one might wonder who so many people bother with the Costa del Sol.

Margate is Ramsgate's boisterous older sister and although Dreamland is closed, parties are out to enjoy the early summer. The town has also discovered its artistic heritage, ranging from Turner to Emin, and there's a quaint network of craft shops in the town centre. And a discarded bus shelter has been converted into a Covid memorial.

Heading east, the seascape becomes increasingly lonely with limitless views over the Thames Estuary. One might have thought the chalk cliffs were solid but as the route swings east and then south, it passes several gaps leading to Botany, Joss, Louisa Bays and others. Places to explore another time. Passing Broadstairs, Ramsgate's genteel aunt, I am back to base with a healthy sunburn.

And East Kent is so close to continental Europe that on another walk my phone company welcomes me to France and their roaming rates!

      London-on-sea

      April 7, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

As noted before, the empty shop fronts in the town centres of these southern seaside towns are a shame. There are three causes: internet shopping, Covid (blamed for so many things) and out of town shopping centres. On the bus ride from Ramsgate this morning, I pass a monstrous one half-way between the two towns, featuring the usual suspects. I won't give them free publicity by naming them but we know who they are.

One solution could be the use of these towns for commuting to and from London and while the trains are not particularly fast, they're frequent and residents can enjoy the fresh North Sea air for half of London prices. In Margate some artistic pioneers seem to have moved in---it is after all, home of J.M.W. Turner and Tracey Emin. Traditional beachside pursuits however, have still to wake up from the long winter.

I'm taking the 7-mile walk round the North Foreland, a repeat of last June. There's no heatwave like then but a cruel Gale 8 westerly; however it does wonders to clear the air (if you look closely at the 6th image of the stone bollards on the foreshore, you can see a massive wind farm on the horizon). The Viking Coastal Trail mostly follows the cliff top but with periodic drops to Botany Bay, Joss Bay and others. Later comes Broadstairs, more genteel than the rough and ready Margate, and finally another climb for the home stretch. A good bracing walk!
