      In The Beatles' Footsteps

      September 2, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We enjoyed a fabulous magical mystery tour through Liverpool, with a charming guide named Paul B. Not only is he a Beatles super-fan, but he was actually delivered by McCartney's mom, who was a midwife.

Along the way, we passed by places in Liverpool that played pivotal roles in the lives of the Beatles. We even stopped at some, including Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, and Paul McCartney's family home.

Our guide pointed out all the places mentioned in the song Penny Lane, including the barber shop, fire department, and the spot where the pretty nurse was handing out poppies.

In 2018, Paul McCartney visited Penny Lane during a carpool karaoke episode with James Corden. After Paul autographed the sign, locals covered it with a protective shield.

Here's the link to the carpool karaoke episode. In it, Paul explains the touching story behind the song "Let It Be," among other tidbits, such as the fact that his dad thought they should call their first bit hit, "She Loves You, Yes, Yes, Yes," rather than using the Americanism, "Yeah." This clip is well worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjvzCTqkBDQ

Penny Lane is an ancient toll road that gets its name from the penny farmers were charged to take their goods to market back in the day. (I've seen a couple other Penny Lanes in the UK, so now I know why!)

While we were standing in front of Paul McCartney's childhood home, a psychedelic-painted Rolls Royce pulled up. It's a replica of John Lennon's famous car that's used for private tour groups.

The British National Trust owns Paul McCartney's childhood home as well as John Lennon's. Both are kept just as they were while "the lads" were growing up. You can even go inside if you make arrangements in advance.

An elderly woman lives in Ringo's former childhood home, so we could only look from afar. "We don't want to give her a fright," Paul B. explained. As you can see, around the corner from the house, there's a large mural of Ringo.

While I'm a fan of The Beatles, I worried that this tour would feel cheesy. I'm happy to report that it was wonderful.

      Cathedral of Liverpool

      June 25, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

      Liverpool tour

      September 6, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Liverpool is a maritime city in northwest England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. A key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it's also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Ferries cruise the waterfront, where the iconic mercantile buildings known as the "Three Graces" – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head.Read more

      Conwy, Liverpool

      June 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

      May 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Miss you Honey …. Our First Eurovision Event!!!

      May 8, 2023 in England

Nik - After exploring Chester today it was time tonight to head into Liverpool for our first Eurovision event!

We caught the 6:15pm train into James Street and went to the Eurovillage. There was various Eurovision photo opportunities on the way down to Pier Head, which of cause we HAD to take advantage of.

Security is tight getting into the village and there are a a long list of things we're not allowed to take in with us. We had to line up a bit but the line didn't move too slowly.

First stop was the official merchandise store for a few souvenirs before exploring.

There is two very long lines of bars, several food places, Conchita's Holiday House (which is basically a photo opportunity) and a big area to explore Ukrainian culture. (We didn't have much time there tonight we we left the cultural area to explore when we have more time.

Then to the stage are for Go_A. She was fabulous! We danced to Shum (from Eurovision 2021) But the really REALLY special thing was when she had the entire audience hold hands and do a circle dance.

Then we had tickets to Fusion Night Club dancing with other Eurovision fanatics. We had been hoping to see The Roop but they didn't come on to late and we had to leave at 11:15pm in order to make the last train back to Chester.

      Semi Final Family Show

      May 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Nik - After initially missing out on tickets in the original Ticket Master release, and the OGAE Australia fan tickets...and playing the waiting game when OGAE Australia managed to score a handful of more tickets. Add to that all the planning it's taken to get here, and the stress over tickets not appearing in our accounts when they should have (we only got the e-tickets yesterday). It's been a marathon.

So is it any wonder that when we finally opened the double doors and stepped into the arena for the first time that I started to well up. Excitement, wonder and disbelief. We actually made it!

The arena is maybe only slightly bigger than where Australia Decides was held. But it took my breath away.

And the show was fabulous! Seeing the artists and songs yes...but also seeing all the behind the sceens mechanisms, the cameras whizzing by just infront of us and overhead, the heat from the fire special effects washing over us. Ohhhh, magic!

We had standing tickets and I knew it would be tough for both of us. I underestimated how tough. Suzies ankle and my back were aching by the 3/4 mark. The press of people all dancing made it hot and uncomfortable. We both needed a good sit down after.

Liverpool — Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey

      February 18 in England ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Life goes on day after day
      Hearts torn in every way
      So, ferry cross the Mersey
'Cause this land's the place I love
      And here I'll stay
      People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care
      So, ferry cross the Mersey
      And always take me there
      The place I love
      People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is, boy
      We'll never turn you away
      So I'll continue to say
      Here I always will stay
      So ferry, cross the Mersey
'Cause this land's the place I love
      And here I'll stay
      And here I'll stay
      Here I'll stay
