Cotswolds, the Bard and Friends at Lunch

      May 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Our destination for today was the outskirts of Birmingham via Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.

A motorway route to Stratford would have been about 20 minutes quicker, but we chose to take a more scenic route through the northern Cotswolds. A lovely morning in Oxford gradually turned to showers of rain for the rest of the day.
As the Cotswolds is one area we were not spending much time in at all, we travelled via a really beautiful little town (Burton-on -the-Water) and enjoyed morning tea by the banks of this quintessentially idyllic English village. It embodied everything you could imaging a small English country town should be. Beautiful historic buildings, open spaces and grassed area running down to a perfect little stream running through the centre of town.

After coffee and pastry from the Bakery, we headed off for Stratford through more rolling hills and greenery.

We toured the Birthplace of Shakespeare and then strolled through town a short distance to meet up with Stephen and Lindsey Whitehouse for lunch. It was lovely to see them again and we talked for a couple of hours over lunch. We had stayed so long that Daniel (their son, who attends school there - the same school that Shakespeare attended!) strolled down the street and we chatted briefly before we all had to part company.
The Whitehouses asked to pass on their love to all of you who might know them.

It was now late in the afternoon, but we still had 3 more sightseeing tasks before heading to our overnight accommodation near Birmingham.

Shakespeare’s ‘new place’, Anne Hathaway’s cottage and then a drive to Coventry to take a short look at the Cathedral that was bombed during World War 2 and stands as a grim reminder of what the British endured. So badly and repeatedly was Coventry bombed due to its industrial production, car and aircraft engines, munitions manufacture etc that it became one of Hitler’s prime targets. Today the bombed out shell of the Cathedral is an ongoing reminder of the ‘Coventry Blitz’.

A half hour drive from Coventry to our little apartment in Solihull saw us arriving at about 7pm. Not much dinner required after a large and excellent lunch with our friends.

      From Plantation Lane to Kemsing

      October 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Den deutschen Text findest du unten!

"Driving on the highway in the rain, heavy traffic in the Birmingham area. Rupert is as joyful as ever behind the wheel, and I'm sitting beside him, thoroughly exploring Facebook. Gilbert O'Sullivan sings for us, so wonderfully that we let the CD play three times. Pleasant traveling.

At 4 PM, we reach Kemsing, where the McNairs live. It's a nice residential area with a few shops right in front of the house. We're directed to the neighbor's property, as they're on vacation. Low-hanging branches of a tree are promptly trimmed for us.

Roy, who lost his Hazel on September 27, joins us in the motorhome, and we talk for a while. You can't see his 77 years. He's a lean man in jeans and a hoodie, with subtle charisma, telling us about his last days with Hazel."

      Bumpy, bumpy BHX

      October 25, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Cooler Start!

      Carving Pumpkins and Bonfire Night

      October 26, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

      Hello World

      October 29, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

Gute Nacht jetzt erst einmal. Morgen treff ich sehr wahrscheinlich keine Berühmtheiten, also können dann wieder alle alles verstehen! Bis dann! Schlaft schön aus!

      Back in Curdworth

      October 28, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

      The play what Bill wrote

      July 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Now, Ernie Wise always included the line 'The play what I wrote' in his sketches. But did you know this interesting fact? He stole that line from a certain Bill Shaggyspear who apparently wrote a few lines in the late 16th century. He's the bloke that William Shakespeare modelled himself on. It's all in Wikipedia.

Anyway, having left Worcs behind we moved into Warwickshire, Shakespeare country and immediately encountered The Tempest restaurant. Would you believe, the manager was called Storm! You couldn't make it up.

We found a mobile Post Office. Brilliant. And fields of purple flowers. Brilliant. And passed through the historic heart of England. Busy day!

Several farm shops and National Trust properties later we arrive at The Old Rectory c.1394 owned by Dot, 91, who drives a Porsche. The 50 mile ride was well worth it.

      Babysitting in the UK

      October 26, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

      Huddlesford

      October 18, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Leaving Wolseley, we headed for Rugeley hoping for a similarly interesting stop. Instead, we pulled into a ghost town. The entire high street except for Gregg's and Costa was shut and it all felt rather sad. So we nipped into Morrison's before going back to the boat for a swift exit!

We travelled onwards towards Fradley Junction thinking we might stop there but we arrived about 4.30pm, and with the only attraction being the Swan pub, we pushed on a little further with the prospect of a lie in tomorrow. Instead we turned onto the Coventry Canal (a first!) and headed for Huddlesford. We passed a disused RAF base used for bomber proving and testing during WWII as we went. As the sun went down, a chill crept in and we hit Huddlesford with the last of the light at about 6pm, all geared up for a meal at the local pub. Sadly they also stopped serving food at 6pm on a Sunday so we drank and planned the rest of the journey instead.

A pleasant day aided by having no goal in mind meaning that there isn't a rush to hit certain points.
