      Deel 3

      June 12, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      September 16, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

My last night in Edinburgh and Scotland. I finally got to sit on the royal mile and enjoy a tasting of whisky 😋. Slàinte mhath (slan-ge-var), Good Health.

      Left to right:
Edradour 10, that's a hard no. Too smokey for me.
Glengoyne 10, it was ok, but better with a bit of water.
Balvenie Double Wood 12, was ok.
Glenfarclas 15, very nice. My choice.

I am sad to be leaving. We had a rocky start Edinburgh and I, but it is an amazing place.

      More stolen treasures

      January 2 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

This morning we got up and checked out of our accommodation and marched back up to the old town where our final beds are for Edinburgh. It was much too early to check in so we put our bags in storage and sat in the common area to plan the day.

The decision was made to head to the national museum of Scotland. Fortunately for us, like the national Museum in London, it is also free to enter!

We made the short walk, sat down for a coffee, then explored the building. It had many impressive exhibits, but the ones we spent the most time in were the natural history, as well as the science and engineering section, the latter of which had a lot of really fun interactive exhibits!

Once we were done we walked around exploring some more random shops that were in the area. Then we went and checked in our room.

Our plan for late lunch / dinner was to use our favourite app again and get a meal pack from our favourite store (Greggs!) But the saddest thing happened: when we were about to walk out the door they cancelled the order... Very sad.

Instead we went to the supermarket and got ourselves a meal deal, came back to the hostel and then did some planning before relaxing the rest of the night.

      Umbrella…ella…ella!

      March 20 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

After lunch the rain really started coming down, so when I saw this large covered outdoor mall, I was ready to shop for an umbrella! ☔️ 😆 It’s so nice to have no communication problems! Every other time I’ve come to Europe, I’ve had to deal with language barrier! I especially appreciate it when it comes to menus and to shopping! After buying myself some extra rain protection, I made my way past that large gothic monument I passed yesterday. It turns out it’s a tribute to Sir Walter Scott (Poet/Author) erected in 1840! I decided to walk through “old town” on my way back to my hostel. More cute shops, a view of the back of Edinburgh Castle and a stop for some specially crafted hot Chocolate.Read more

      Royal Mile

      April 28, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

St Giles Cathedral was beautiful, with a statue of Albus Dumbledore...er, I mean John Knox.

The statue of a stool is in honor of Jenny Geddes, who started a riot by throwing a stool at the bishop in church (they didn't want a bishop, England was trying to force it on them). Willow's comment: I too, would like to be remembered for my murder weapon.

      Willow found her dream dress.

The story of Deacon Brodie likely inspired Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

We loved all of the tiny side streets, called closes.

      Edinburgh #Day 15

      August 26, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Nonostante siamo rimasti 2 ore a girare, abbiamo visto pochissimo in maniera approfondita.
Tre... Chissà 😝

      National Museum Edinburgh

      September 18, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    • Day 99

      Edinburgh museum

      July 29, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After morning clean up and preparing veg for dinner, off I went to catch the bus into the botanical gardens. Unfortunately I asked the driver for the museum stop?? It must've been in my unconscious that I wanted to come here?

I thought about it as I sat on the bus and thought och well I don't have to get off at that stop ..South Bridge...anyway as I sat, a lovely elderly woman, anxious on my behalf, caught my attention and said "you'll have tar get aff at this stop for the museum, ye'll have tar hurry," then the driver called me out as well...so off the bus I reluctantly got to find my way to the museum..

It is a stunning underground cave like place and I stopped for a cuppa before further exploration....just taking in the ambiance ... I'm looking forward to exploring the history of Scotland section.

I came across sections of the museum where James, Macayla and I had spent quite a few hours exploring, playing and having sandwiches...that I did that makes me laugh now, the children didn't complain, but it was easy to tell they wanted chips, pies, sweets from the cafe!!

That was a few years ago now maybe 2010? The room decorated as in the 1800s, the area where people sit and try to pull their own body weight up, the rally on r racing car the children sat in... Just the size of the place is incredible and I almost couldn't believe that the skeleton of a deer, more than twice the height of an average human, was real. Apparently the skeleton was found on the Isle of Wight in the 1800s!

It was amazing to see artefacts left of Charles Stuart the young pretender and to take in some of the history behind the "union" of England and Scotland, bought by bribes and gifts of titles and lands to a few people.

The time was drawing close to the predicted rain so, all too soon, my legs were heading for my digs and a good horizontal stretch before a downpour. Another day tomorrow to be out and about exploring.

      Droomstad (1/2)

      April 7, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Even een kort overzichtje:

      - het Kasteel van Edinburgh
      - de ultieme schot met mooie muziek
      - ik herhaal, de idyllische, prachtige, middeleeuwse gebouwen
      - honger oplossen
      - ZWAARDEN

      Edinburgh

      June 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
