      Oxford

      August 2, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

After a nauseating ferry ride we were welcomed by the white cliffs of Dover and England's best friend: the rain. We pushed straight on to Oxford. This small city is full of students, which makes sense because it has the oldest (12th C) and probably most beautiful university of the UK 🎓. Their Bodleian Library is one of the most important in the world. All this history combined with lots of vegan food made for a great start of our trip!Read more

      Oxford&Hogwarts

      August 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      Oxford

      April 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

So many really cool buildings, but I suppose that's to be expected in Oxford. More Harry Potter filming sites, and one of the colleges has a deer park! The plain short-ish tower you see is Saxon Tower, the oldest building in Oxford. The fan-vaulted ceiling is the inside of the Divinity School (part of Bodleian Library).Read more

Day trip to Oxford and Cotswolds

      April 22, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Strahlender Sonnenschein ☀️

      Day 25 Oxford

      August 25, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Another scorcher in London today (33 deg) and we took a day trip to the city of Oxford, famous naturally enough for its world renowned university. Getting there was easy enough, it’s a journey of about an hour from Paddington station. Against my better judgement we decided to take the hop on hop off bus (I’m just not a fan...) but it gave us a really good overview of the main sites, University colleges and key information that enabled us to get a well rounded picture of the role the university plays in British and world events.

After doing almost a complete lap of the city we got off and walked back to a couple of the sites we were interested in and had something to drink at the Kitchen Bar in Magadalen College overlooking the canal where punting takes place. That was quite amusing as many people elect to have a crack at it themselves rather than have one of the students do the punting for them. If you find yourself here take my advice and let the experts take care of the punting, most all of the amateurs ended up going backwards or round in circles. Sadly though no-one fell off while we were there....

We took a short walk through the grounds before having lunch on the high street. Went to the covered market (don’t bother) and walked around town before heading back to the station to catch a train back to London about 2.40 pm. That was the start of a few delays.... The train turned up on time but then had a systems failure which meant all the electrics (and crucially the air-con) failed. That took fifteen very hot minutes to sort out and we arrived back at Paddington about 4 pm only to find that a points failure (no, I don’t know what that means either) had closed the underground line we needed to be on.

London was super busy as well, as it was a bank holiday and the Notting Hill Carnival was also on which is sort of like London’s version of Rio’s Carnivale.
Anyway, several roundabout subway journeys later we eventually made it back about 5.15....

Photos attached - my Wimbledon souvenir (couldn’t post my actual Wimbledon photos...); punting in Oxford; Magdalen College, Oxford Uni; Oxford’s own bridge of sighs...; Christ Church College, Oxford Uni; Oxford High St; the rear of the Bodelian Library, Oxford Uni; err, another old building that we liked the look of....; the Chapel in Magdalen College

      Oxford with Nicole

      July 10, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

After an odyssey-like journey to pick up the rental car and then drive to Oxford (with a GPS glitch of sending me towards Legoland) I finally joined Nikki on a tour of Oxford that included a punting ride on the River Cherwell. Afterwards, she took me out for a birthday dinner of sushi and then we retired to our hotel/pub, The Head of The River. Lovely!Read more

      Oxford … kulturelle Highlights

      March 27, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Read more

      My second home Oxford

      November 21, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

I love Oxford. It is so similar to my home town, Göttingen. It's a university city, so it has a huge number of students living in it. They make the old, architectural city vibrant and colourful. The thick walls and old history become full of life when mixed with the different cultures of the students.
When I lived here in 2020 being an au pair, I fell in love with the city and its vibe. This time around, it was the same but so different. I have grown so much in the last two years. I've gone through so much shit and godd things and did so many things. And being here again, it felt like looking at my younger self and seeing what mistakes I could have avoided. The surroundings were somehow different, although nothing changed very much - at least not externally.

Today we were just spending some lowkey time at Leah's, enjoying good food, music and friendship.

      Oxford

      April 20, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

      Oxford

      May 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

On Sunday and to leave the Isle of Wight and commuted to Oxford. The journey there was rather long, but it was easy to find the trains and buses I had to take. I arrived in the late afternoon at my Bed and Breakfast in Summertown, an area in Oxford with pretty neighborhoods and shops, and cafes. I was pretty tired so I just wandered around the area and went to bed early.

After a nice breakfast on Monday, I went into the city center of Oxford.
Oxford was founded back in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages Oxford grew rather important, it’s said it was the 6th largest city in England at that time. In the late 12th century the University of Oxford was built. Today the University and its colleges have around 40’000 attending, which makes up a quarter of the city. Between the massive and elegant-looking old buildings that host colleges or museums, you can always find green spots and trees. As I walked through the city and looked at all the pretty colleges, libraries, and churches I felt the city's charm that the mix between the long history and modernity the people living there brought it. Despite the many people roaming around, you feel safe and connected to the city. I find it a very pretty city and I can tell, why so many students want to study at the University of Oxford.
