      Salisbury

      May 12, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

After arriving in Salisbury we visited Salisbury Cathedral. It has the tallest spire in England and was built in 1310-1330. It was a stunning building.

Tonight is the last night of the Cornwall Tour. Tomorrow we head back to London.Read more

      Salisbury Cathedral

      August 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Paganism to Christianity in one day!

We squeezed a lot into today. We visited Frome in the middle of the day as they had their Wednesday markets on. We had a lovely lunch there.

We planned to head to Salisbury late in the day as we hoped to hear the choir practice for Evensong. For once we were in luck! We did have a quick wander around the Cathedral but mostly I wanted to listen to the beautiful music 🎶Read more

      Powered by Canadian coffee

      December 20, 2023 ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

We had a relaxing morning, we lazily got up and packed our belongings while enjoying some coffee and planning a little of our week next week.

We left the sunny coastal town and headed towards Salisbury where we are staying for the night. After a midway stop for some Timmy's we reached our accommodation. As it was 15:30 by the time we got to our accommodation we decided to dump our bags and go explore the town before the sun completely sets at 16-16:30.

Sailsbury is a medieval town with the most notable attraction being it's cathedral with Britain’s tallest spire, largest cloisters, and biggest Cathedral Close, as well as an original 1215 Magna Carta. We unfortunately arrived just as it was closing to the public so hopefully we'll go check it out tomorrow morning before we leave for bath.

Other than the very impressive cathedral the town was very picturesque and lovely too. We enjoyed a walk around the area before stopping at M&S for dinner.

We enjoyed dinner with some trash TV, had a quick walk around the block to push our step count up for the day and then planned our activities for next week some more.

      Step count: 10.5k

PS. Don't try the Salisbury perfume.

    • Day 4

      Salisbury - Cathedral

      August 2, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Read more

      Salisbury

      April 21, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    • Day 22

      Salisbury

      October 7, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

On our way back to Godalming, after our visit to Stonehenge, we visited the town of Salisbury, to view, among other things, the grand cathedral there.
The bought some delicious Cornish pasties from a Cornish bakery and ate lunch in the extensive gardens around the cathedral. Then we for a visit inside the cathedral. Where the Italian cathedrals have domes, the English cathedrals have spires, at least in the rural townships outside London.
The cathedral was grand. It has been the subject of many paintings over the centuries, particularly in the Romantic art movement.
The cathedral also houses one of only four extant copies of the Magna Carta written on parchment from 1215. Two of the other three are in the British Library and the third is in Lincoln Castle. The copy in the Salisbury is the best preserved of all four. There was originally a copy supplied to each cathedral in England but because it was annulled shortly after, most cathedrals did not keep them. It was then reinstated in a slightly larger form in 1225.
There is a copy of the Magna Carta from 1297 in Canberra.
The earliest copy, in Salisbury Cathedral, is located in the chapter house, where we were able to view it in a large theft-proof glass case. We were not allowed to take photos of the display due to rules related to preservation of the parchment and ink. It is in a darkened space and no flash photos are allowed.
Salisbury is a beautiful old town that is a picture of the Medieval period. It was a sunny afternoon and perfect for a visit.
We left Salisbury in the early evening and returned to Godalming where Steve and Fiona had booked an Airbnb for two nights. I was able to sleep in Jo and Asher’s lounge room in their small one bedroom flat in Salisbury House in Godalming.

    • Day 15

      Salisbury

      May 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      Porthcourno - Salisbury

      May 22, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Read more

    • Day 5

      Salisbury - katedrala

      July 19, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Salisburyjsko katedralo so gradili 38 let v 13. stoletju.
