      Day 2

      Erster Tag in Shrewsbury

      Um 8:30 Uhr begann mein erster Tag an der Severnvale Academy...obwohl, da es bereits mein dritter Sprachkursus ist,war es fast wie "nach Hause " kommen. Wie schön bekannte Gesichter zu sehen: Ed, Charlie, Laurence, Jill.. Natürlich durfte der erste Gang Richtung Quarry vor Unterrichtsbeginn nicht fehlen 😍. Derzeit gibt es viele Studenten an der Academy, die Lunchtime haben wir in einer kleinen Gruppe verbracht. Um 15:15 Uhr war Unterrichtsschluss...ist doch anstrengend und ich muss mich wieder daran gewöhnen. Übrigens wurde ich zwar mit Regen und Wind geweckt, es gab aber auch noch viel Sonnenschein. In 30 Minuten Fußweg zu Gilly und Luna konnte ich gut Frischluft tanken. Eine Gassi- Runde darf auch hier nicht fehlen 😅Read more

      The Dingle and Lyth Hill

      Was gibt es Schöneres als nach dem Unterricht Zeit in the Dingle zu verbringen 😍.
      Am späten Nachmittag ging es dann gut 10 Minuten mit dem Auto zum Lyth Hill,ein toller Ausflug mit Gilly und Luna,bei bestem Wetter.Read more

      Shrewsbury — The Abbey

      Brother Cadfael brought me to Shrewsbury and I’m so glad he did. I’m in Shropshire now, in western England. The author Edith Pargeter created Cadfael, the 12th century Benedictine monk turned sleuth in her historical mysteries written under the name of Ellis Peters. This is one of my favorite mystery series, and it’s set in the Shrewsbury Abbey which holds the Shrine of St Winefride, a medieval pilgrimage site. There’s a great British tv series based on the books which stars Derek Jacobi. The abbey has a Benedictine window which includes one small section that honors Pargeter and this beloved character. This visit was a highlight of my English travels so far.Read more

      Severnvale Academy, 1. Woche

      April 19 in England ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

      Es ist Freitag,die erste Woche ist geschafft. Montag und Dienstag war es noch sehr anstrengend, jetzt ist es schon beinahe normal englisch zu sprechen. In dieser Woche waren wir ein bunter Mix aus: Italien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien, Estland ,Malaysia und Russland . Es macht großen Spaß sich auszutauschen und zu lernen, die Lunchtime gemeinsam zu verbringen ( zumindest in kleinen Gruppen) und die Social Events nicht zu vergessen. Heute kann ich sogar im Sonnenschein in The Dingle sitzen und ein Eis genießen 😍 den Tag bzw. die Schulwoche haben wir später im Pub "Henry Tudor House" ausklingen lassen 🤗Read more

      Day 62

      A Day in Shrewsbury

      For our day in Shrewsbury we just about walked our legs off. Shrewsbury is quite compact but there is a lot to see. We started by crossing the English Bridge to look at the Abbey. We were not able to get inside as there was a funeral service being held. We did find in the gounds behind, a memorial to Wilfred Owen, who was a WW1 soldier and poet who lived in Shrewsbury and was tragically killed just a few days before the end of the war. His memorial is etched with his prophetic words " I am the enemy you killed, my friend" Across the road was an artist studio that was open so we called in there for a look. A French woman we met there had been commissioned to replace all the stained glass in a nearby church so we had a good chat about this and other projects. We then walked on and around the river (Severn) to the Dingle which is a lovely park that sits in the bend of the river as it goes around the town. Saw the rowing club and lots of walkers and families enjoying the lovely expansive lawns and trees. Back into the town found us lunch at a nice cafe run by volunteers supporting victims of domestic violence. Actually, we've seen lots of similar groups for all sorts of causes usually through their respective church organisations. Volunteering is alive and well in the UK.       Shrewsbury, Dickens, and Darwin

      Today we moved on from Ludlow and parted company with Pat. After our usual breakfast of local eggs (this time Welsh from a road side stall) we packed our bags and headed to Shrewsbury. Here we dropped Pat at the train station for his trip back to London. We then drove just down the road to the Lion Hotel where we have booked in for two nights. It was too early to book in so we walked back to the station to say a final goodbye to Pat. As we walked back we saw a statue of Charles Darwin. On investigation, we discovered that the building behind was the school he went to (now a library) so we went inside and had a good look. Amazingly, there were scratched names and dates of former pupils all over wooden cladding and both upper floor rooms retain original features though now being used as library study areas. Further up the road was St Mary's Cathedral which is the oldest church in Shrewsbury dating from the 11th century. Shrewsbury was one of the few medieval towns not to be impacted by the industrial revolution so it's original layout and many buildings are still intact. There are funny little alleyways and cobbled streets and ancient wooden framed buildings everywhere, each with its own distinctive features. Remarkably and wonderfully most are still in use for contemporary purposes and you can often venture in and wander upstairs for a meal or a geek. Great fun!
      The Lion Hotel turned out to be where Charles Darwin stayed before he left to join the Beagle for his world voyage. It is also where Charles Dickens wrote The Pickwick Papers. So we are staying in the middle of history.      Read more

      Shrewsbury

      Shrewsbury is a town I spent a couple of hours in on my End2End cycle ride a few years ago as I needed to get a repair to my bike. I remembered it being a very elegant town with some historic buildings in a very smart town centre bordered by the River Severn.
      We managed to find a site just to the north of the river and 10 minutes walk into the town.
      Shrewsbury is a little gem of a place. We have seen it in glorious sunshine and probably at its best, but it is full of ancient buildings intermingling with old churches, tudor buildings and new arcades - everything was well looked after and pristine.
      The old Castle stands high and is now a military museum, it overlooks a sweeping bend in the river which surrounds the town centre and within the loop lies sports grounds, gardens, very elegant school buildings and meadows.
      One day was spent with retail therapy and the next we spent walking around the river walk and gardens. There is a fabulous fabric/patchwork shop which Karen had googled before our visit. It had such a wide choice of wonderful fabrics- just had to buy some!!!
      The town is full of things to do and to see, and a haven for CAMRA enthusiasts. Our neighbours on the site have spent 10 days here taking it all in whilst sampling the real ales which abound- there seems to be an old pub on every corner.
      We enjoyed an afternoon tea by a riverside cafe in glorious sunshine.
      We resolved to return here at a later date as we have enjoyed the town so much.      Read more

      We were lucky enough to be woken up this morning with a cup of tea by Bella before the girls all headed out to the stables and the boys off to the farm.

      We packed up and helped ourselves to breakfast then I spent a few minutes psyching myself up for the return journey up the hill. I was feeling more confident, but still had to tell Lindsey not to watch! It was pretty scary, but I made it without dropping the bike and without putting my feet down! So proud!

      We took the A66 to Brough then the A685 to Kirkby Stephen as usual, but decided to avoid the motorway as far as we could and took the A683 all the way to Lancaster. It was truly the most beautiful and fun road road we'd been on all trip. I could have stopped 10 times for photos, but was enjoying the ride so much we didn't stop at all. But the views along the valley, to the hills, to the waterfalls were just stunning. We hardly saw any traffic the whole way, but maybe we were just lucky.

      We took the M6 around Liverpool, and the M56 to Chester then headed south to Shrewsbury. We had rain, sunshine, rain, sunshine.

      We decided to get to Wales for lunch and stopped in Wrexham to find a nice pub. Oops. Nevermind, we never have to go back there.

      We arrived in Shrewsbury just before 3 and have a lovely bedroom, our own kitchen, bathroom and dining room, all 10 minutes walk from the town centre and breakfast included. Not bad for £46.

      We had a cup of tea then headed into town to explore. We walked all along the river, further than we meant to, then criss-crossed the town centre trying to see all the sights before finally deciding on a pub for a quick cider - the Loopy Shrew.

      We walked back to the river to the Armoury for dinner, then home again via Tesco for chocolate.      Read more
