      London Calling

      We made it to London! It took around 2hrs from Madrid to London.
      We were greeted at the airport by Zoe’s mum, Louise, who has been so kind to host us during our short stay in the UK.
      Louise drove us to her place in Harefield, about a 30min drive from Heathrow north-west of London, where we were able to have a much needed shower and get changed.

      We walked around the town which is very lovely and walked to an English pub for a pint in a beer garden in the sun. Daniel enjoyed his beer though he forgot that they wouldn’t serve it cold here! We returned back to Louise’s place for a delicious home-cooked roast dinner with red wine. After talking and enjoying, we went to bed for a much needed rest!      Read more

      Check in Maidenhead

      Wir freuten uns schon, die Gastgeberin Catherine unserer letzten Unterkunft kennenzulernen.
      Maidenhead ist eine Marktstadt im Royal Borough of Windsor und Maidenhead in der Grafschaft Berkshire, am südwestlichen Ufer der Themse. Die Stadt liegt 27 Meilen (43 km) westlich von London.

      Aufgrund des Fotos von Catherine und den Bewertungen waren wir auf das Kommende nicht vorbereitet…

      Wir klingelten…und klingelten… es waren viele Stimmen zu hören, doch es kam niemand. Ich versuchte anzurufen, in dem Moment ging die Tür auf und ein extrem pigmentierter junger Mann stand vor uns und begrüßte uns freudestrahlend mit einem lauten „Hello“! Eine ältere Dame mit schulterlangen grauen Haaren in einem Hippie-Look stand dahinter… ich schaute mich um, ob ich Cathrine sehe… da stellte die leicht verrückt wirkende Frau sich vor…Es war Cathrine, unsere Gastgeberin, auf dem Bild war sie scheinbar mindestens 10 Jahre jünger!
      Alles in allem fehlte eigentlich nur noch die Frage nach ’nem Joint und ein bekifftes „Peace Freunde“ 🙀🙈
      Wir waren doch etwas erschrocken! Aber…sie war wirklich sehr nett und freundlich! Catherine zeigte uns unser Zimmer, welches auch wie auf der Website beschrieben war und das Bad.
      Scheinbar gibt es in diesem Haus keine Schlüssel, denn unser Zimmer und das Bad hatten keine Schlüssel 🤔.
      Ein etwas mulmiges Gefühl haben wir hier schon, vor allem so ganz ohne Schlüssel in diesem leicht spuky Haus😬. Kurz überlegten wir den Nachtschrank vor die Tür zu schieben 🙈🤔.
      Wir hoffen und beten, dass wir alles gut überstehen und werden uns ganz früh morgen aus dem Staub machen😜.
      Auf das „kontinentale Frühstück“ verzichten wir doch lieber und freuen uns auf unsere Tour durch London!      Read more

      Day 3

      Day 3:
      We set off expecting to see 7 major attractions...and ended the day exhausted after seeing just a few. We need more time - or a return trip. 1st stop was St Paul's Cathedral; Wow! It was beautiful without the over the top oppulance of the Vatican. I managed the 300 steps to the gallery and Matt did the extra 200 to the top. We then went to Tower Bridge, then took a boat ride to Greenwich to see the Cuttysark. After a pint, we went to Westminster Bridge to take a photo of Big Ben, then just sat and watched London pass on by, before walking to Trafalga Square - passing by Number 10 to see if the PM was home - he wasn't!Read more

      Day 2

      We hit the ground running

      After 2 uneventful flights (Loss slept solidly for at least 10 hrs during our Singapore to London flight!), we landed at Heathrow around 7.30am local time.
      We did all the usual arrival stuff, then left our bags at Heathrow in a secure facility and jumped in a pre-booked car to Windsor Castle.
      We had a bit of time to walk around exploring the quaint twin towns of Windsor and Eton before touring Windsor castle itself.
      Eton college could be viewed from the outside- the alma mater of many famous Brits including George Orwell, David Cameron, Boris Johnson and Princes William and Harry to name a few.
      The Eton and Windsor brewery was our lunch stop, and Loss couldn’t resist sampling their latest creation which has been specially crafted to be served at king Charles’ Coronation in just over a week’s time. They are the official Royal Brewers, so how could she say no?
      It was then on to Windsor castle for a tour of both St George’s chapel and the Castle itself.
      Inside St George’s chapel we joined a large, respectful crowd filing past the burial place of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. It is also the burial place of Henry V111 and many other well known royals from the past.
      Prince Harry and Megan were also married there in 2018.
      As it turned out, King Charles happened to arrive at Windsor castle at almost the same time as us and although we didn’t see him we watched the Royal standard hoisted up the flagpole to mark his presence.
      The length and depth of the history in both places we visited is especially impressive.
      At the conclusion of our tour we caught a cab back to Heathrow, collected our bags and headed down to the Underground to train it in to Kings Cross / St Pancras.
      We’ve now settled in to a small self contained apartment in what seems to be a central yet quiet location in London.
      As I write this, it’s 8pm local time andLoriene is warming up a roast lamb dinner with all the trimmings which she had prepared and frozen at home. Amazing!- although it does help explain why my suitcase mysteriously increased from only just over 12kg when I had packed it up to a figure of about 20kg by the time I was wheeling it out our front door.

      Windsor Castle

      Today started with a bus trip to Windsor to see Windsor Castle. Simply stunning and indescribable. We went into Georges Chapel and saw the graves of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, her parents, King George and Queen Elizabeth, also Henry VIII and many more. Then we visited the Royal Staterooms and Throne Room - it is simply impossible to put into words the historical beauty of these rooms - their decor, art and treasures. It's quite incredible to be there and see it.

      You can't take photos inside the Chapel and Staterooms, but Google can and there a few here which give a bit of an idea.      Read more

      4. Camden und Shoppingtour

      Heute machen wir uns als erstes zum Camden Market auf. Es ist noch relativ früh und die Geschäfte und Stände machen gerade erst auf, trotzdem sind schon recht viele Menschen unterwegs. Zum Frühstück teilen wir uns eine asiatische Nudelpfanne - leider nur so semilecker. Während wir durch die ehemaligen Pferdeställe schlendern und uns die immer gleichen Touristenläden anschauen, überlegt Ann-Sophie hin und her, ob sie sich ein neues Tattoo stechen lassen soll. Nachdem wir uns eine heiße Schokolade gegönnt haben, hat sie sich dazu entschlossen und ein Studio mit recht guten Bewertungen gegoogelt. Ich hole mir noch eine Portion Churros zur Stärkung und dann heißt es ca 1 Stunde warten, bis Ann-Sophie sehr zufrieden mit ihrer neuesten jetzt insgesamt 3. Verzierung ist. Eine Briefmarke mit dem Big Ben. Die Serie mit Briefmarken will sie jetzt fortsetzen.

      Inzwischen ist es richtig richtig voll geworden und wir beschließen in die Innenstadt zu fahren. Um richtig viel zu sehen, nehmen wir den Bus bis Westminster und kommen genau zur richtigen Zeit. Die Wolkendecke ist aufgebrochen und der Big Ben wird gold glänzend von der Sonne beschienen. Ein paar schöne Aufnahmen vom gegenüberliegenden Ufer, einem genialen Fotopoint.

      Dann fahren wir mit dem Bus zu Harrods. Das ist wirklich ein absolutes Luxuskaufhaus aber für unseren Geschmack mal wieder viel zu voll. Aber was haben wir anderes erwartet eine Woche vor Weihnachten. Dazu sind wir schließlich hergekommen. Vorteil ist, dass die Fülle uns richtig viel Geld spart. Denn auch die Oxford Street, die wir danach anfahren, ist mal wieder so voll, dass wir gar nicht erst aussteigen. Wir haben nur noch Hunger und fahren wieder zu dem schönen Pub Jack Horner. Diesmal will ich Yorkshire Pudding ausprobieren. Die Servicekraft erklärt mir, dass das nur ein Stück Brot mit brauner Soße ist. Ich will es aber trotzdem mal probieren. Und was ist es? Ein Stück trockenes Brot mit brauner Soße - allerdings in Puddingform aufgeblasen. Ann-Sophie ist auf den Geschmack von Chickenpie gekommen. Dazu wieder jeder ein Cider und wir sind glücklich. Heute dann schon relativ früh ins Hotel. Wir brauchen ein bisschen Pause.      Read more

      Tag 21 - Harry Potter Studiotour

      Heute gibt es nicht viel zu erzählen.
      Der Hauptprogrammpunkt war die Harry Potter Studiotour. Das ist echt cool gemacht und man kann sich an den vielen Bühnenbildern, Kulissen und Infotafeln kaum sattsehen, geschweige denn sich alles merken. Ist zwar nicht billig, lohnt sich aber und dauert auch ganz schön lange.
      Heute waren wir dann noch bei einem ehemaligen Kollegen von Lisa zum Abendessen eingeladen.      Read more

      Day 19

      Tag 19 - Dalton - Uxbridge

      Heute war wieder ein Fahrtag, ca. 450 km waren es aus dem Lake District nach Uxbridge.
      Auf der Fahrt wechselte ständig das Wetter zwischen Sonnenschein und Starkregen. Wir hatten geplant durch die Cotswolds zu fahren, nur wie würde das Wetter dort sein?
      Zum Picknick fuhren wir zum Broadway Tower, leider mussten wir im Auto bleiben, da es in dem Moment zu schütten anfing.
      Dann ging es weiter nach Lower Slaughter. Dort hatten wir Glück und es kam die Sonne für ein paar schöne Fotos raus. Wir machten noch einen kurzen Stopp in Bourton-on-the-Water, da spielte aber das Wetter schon nicht mehr mit.
      Von dort fuhren wir dann direkt nach Uxbridge, Lisas Wohnort von 2019 bis 2021.      Read more

      Tag 20 - London Innenstadt

      Heute stand London Innenstadt auf dem Programm 👍
      Als erstes ging es zu Big Ben. Da er nicht mehr eingerüstet ist, konnte man auch wieder schöne Fotos machen, wobei die Sonne leider heute nur selten zu sehen war.
      Danach sind wir zum Borough Market gefahren, um einen kleinen Mittagsimbiss einzunehmen. Weiter ging es zur Tower Bridge und zum Leadenhall Market.
      Zum Abschluss des Tages gingen wir am Piccadilly Circus in ein Korean Barbecue Restaurant.      Read more

      Day 1

      Grand Union Canal; Slough Arm

      The Grand Union Canal is the principal navigable waterway between London (River Thames) and the Midlands (Birmingham and Leicester); it has six main branches, usually termed 'arms', and heading north from the Thames these are (in order) -

      Paddington Arm / Slough Arm / Wendover Arm / Aylesbury Arm / Northampton Arm / Saltisford Canal Arm, Warwick.

      Since this trip runs across London from west to east, we start in Slough at the Slough Arm.

      The Slough Arm is a short 5 mile canal branch from Slough to the Grand Union Main Line, and was originally opened to serve the brick-making industry (the last commercial traffic was carried in 1960, but it was re-opened in 1975 and has remained in use since).  Anthony and I start at the Wexham Road Bridge (number 12); there are some business units and rural developments near the canal along the outskirts of Slough, but it is still pleasant walking, especially as we reach and pass through the Colne Valley Regional Park.  After passing under the M25 London Orbital Motorway to enter what is now known as Greater London (formerly Middlesex), we cross three rivers via aqueducts- Colne Brook, River Colne and Frays River, seeing pill boxes that used to guard them.  We reach the Packet Boat Marina (a packet boat used to carry passengers from here to Paddington) and then the junction with the Grand Union Canal at Cowley Peachey, crossing over it by a roving bridge to the tow path on the east side of the canal.

      We walk along the Grand Union Canal, passing through the West London areas of West Drayton and Hayes; it is more built up here, but still good walking.  After about 1.5 miles, we reach the outskirts of Hayes and the junction with the Paddington Arm at Bull's Bridge.  From here, we turn east towards  Paddington and Central London.       Read more
